Why do so many blacks from a certain upbringing incorrectly pronounce and enunciate words containing the letters “th”? E.g., Bathroom, with, tooth, teeth, fifth and so on - as baffroom, wiff, toof, teef, fiff... Also, why do they pronounce “him” as “heem”, and so on? This butchering of the English language is not helping their cause one bit. From the average black person to the highly paid celebrity, many get it wrong. Pathetic ignorance to say the least? Hmmmm...

How come Japanese can't say "l's" What is wrong with those people. How come Italians got to end everything with --a ("That'sa nice-a"?) Why does Arnold Shwartzenegger sound like a German peasant after 40 years in this country? Why can't Swedish people say "j"'s. Yumpin Yiminy?

Why doesn't Nels know about this? Oh, he does, but they are not black so they can butcher the English language all they want and he'll skin and grin and talk about some Negro.

You couldn't even use the same TOILET as a white man in this country until about 40 years ago and all you got to complain about is some OTHER Negro (I assume you ain't talking about yourself--I'd like to hear you ordering a plate of chitlins and pigsnoots at Willies Sweatmeat BBQ stand sometime) and not yourself.

Hurry up and return Jesus! At this rate we'll be back in the trees 'fo you knows it!

I don't know if we Black people have the ability to look at ourselves objectively but we really do tend to trash American English. My number one peeve is when folks say "ax (aks)" instead of "ask" as if this is some sort of a complex word. I was watching something on CNN a few days ago where they were interviewing a Black couple who had lost their son in Iraq. They were all dressed up in their Sunday best and the Dad said something so stupid that I cussed at my TV! I don't remember exactly what it was but he mispronounced a simple word and I went off because it really makes it seem that Blacks are illiterate.

To U.S. - I understand the point that you are trying to make by inverting Nels's original post, but it's not fair to what Nels has said. Because Blacks and whites are inclined to be different in many ways and we do have different mindsets. Just as an example, I feel that we have a certain sense of style that white people just don't possess. I've witnessed Black people do things and make things that whites wouldn't dream of doing. This is why the Black urban hip-hop culture is the trendsetter of most of today's fashions. And why a Black woman can go into a seemingly empty cupboard and whip up a meal while white folks would be sitting up starving.

I'm an interior designer and I occasionally post to interior design forums where people (presumably white) post some of the most inane decorating problems. I mean just plain dumb shit like should they paint an entire wall one color or should they divide it because the wall extends into another room. To a simple problem about curtain hanging - my advice would be that one could tape it, staple it, hot glue it, clip it, nail it, or hook it up with a rubber band, feather boa or whatever works - and those techniques seem to be unheard of to the others. Like my common sense ideas are so novel or something.

Cynique posted here before about Black folks being more spontaneous. She actually said this recently but my search only brought up the following:

http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/2152/6435.html#POST30724

So why take offense? Embrace our differences.

LOL, Mzuri and chrishayden. If I could, I would post the kissing fishes glyph. Sounds like what Nels is complaining about is "Ebonics". I am turned off by poor enunciation and bad grammar also, but who can demand that people not speak in this vernacular especially if they aren't even aware that they are doing it. What you can suggest to them is that being able to speak standard English is an asset that will serve them well.

Well, there ya have it! I have to agree. Unfortunately, this is a no brainer. All the pouting, indignant sticking out of the lips and race pride ranting does not change this irrefutable fact. American blacks do have their own brand of English that is not necessarily working to their advantage. It's fine if your are in the hood with your homies but when you step outside the box into the larger world that communicates and respects "standard English", it's not in the interest of the individual who does not have command nor articulation skills of "standard English". I've heard all the tired arguments, excuses and posturing for the defense of Ebonics and other dubious mutations of standard English. Not one can pass muster in a serious debate of poor self crippling language skills vice reasonable articulation and writing skills (standardized English). Sorry, but the points Nels and Mzuri made merit serious consideration since they clearly point to an ability that determines whether doors will open or remain closed. E'nuff said.......

I feel what you're saying, Mzuri, but what Nels referred to is NOT a Black problem, although s/he made it seems as though poor diction and grammar are exclusive to Blacks. That's what I took offense to.

What Nels is talking about is a socio-economical epidemic that can be applied to every human being regardless of background. If you are poor, uneducated/undereducated and White - you are not going to speak, read or write as well as affluent, well-educated Whites or even middle class Whites. Same holds true for poor, uneducated/undereducated Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, etc, are not going to speak as well or be as proficient in language as those of privilege or blessed with better advantages.

But Nels' post asked "Are there any Black folks out there who know the English language?"

As though this dilemma/deficiency is exclusive to Blacks; as though Blacks alone butcher the English language. Everyone here knows that's bullshit!

US - I doubt if Nels thinks that we don't speak proper American English or he wouldn't even be posting here. And even well edumacated Negroes sometimes speak in a way that is unbecoming and unprofessional, this practice is not only limited to uneducated po folks.

If you ever spoke to me on the phone or in person you would probably fall out of your chair, because I not only sound exactly like a whitegirl but it's all very chi-chi with me. I could carry on a convo with The Donald without batting an eyelash (and discuss damn near anything). And I am also fluent in Ebonics. A lot of sisters are bi-lingual like that these days.

We all know that the problem Nels addressed isn't limited to just Black people, it just seems that some Blacks don't use good judgment as to when to speak homie and when to speak properly. At the courthouse, the bank, job interview, the doctor's office and during your fifteen minutes of fame is not the time to speak Ghettoese. Why don't people get that. It's almost as if some folks think it's cute to act like you lack intelligence.

Anyway, Nels & US - I feel your pain. The shit is frustrating no matter how you look at it.

"As though this dilemma/deficiency is exclusive to Blacks; as though Blacks alone butcher the English language. Everyone here knows that's bullshit!"

No, bad or poor lingusitical skills is not exclusive to blacks. But black people are singled out as the only native born group with the worst language skills (as a group). This is not to say there are not other geographical and dialect differences (non-black)that do not pass standardized North American English standards. I'm afraid you are a tad defensive about a subject that documents itself.

In America, language is broken down along racial lines. By that I mean if you listen to someone on the phone, there is a very good chance you could make a reasonable guess as to whether they were black or white. It's not a 100% but you probably would be right more than you would be wrong. But if you were in England, Scotland or Ireland (yes, there are blacks living there -I should know, I've been there) that would not be the case -for the most part. You cannot tell if the person is black or white by their voice since language is not broken down along racial lines. In America, it is.

But as we all know, there are exceptions. Many years ago I was introduced to a woman by a mutual friend. I called her and we talked on the phone for about three months before we actually met. One day, the mutual friend came over my place with his girl friend and her (he was Puerto Rican and his girl friend was white or Latino -I don't recall). He and his girl friend walked in and behind them was a 6" tall black woman! I was stunned! For the entire time I talked to her, I assumed she was white. She wasn't.

I met a white woman about ten years ago who sounded like a regular black woman. I recall sitting across a table from her and staring at a genetic blue eyed white female who sound like Aretha Franklin! She had been raised around black people, previously married to a black man and had black children. And there was none of that bull shit wigger wannabe fake ass inflection in her voice (which I detest). SHE JUST NATURALLY SOUNDED LIKE A BLACK WOMAN!

So, there are always exceptions. But for the most part, the majority of black people sound black (like me) and most white people sound white. And there are no advantages to being linguistically shackled to Ebonics with no articulation, comprehension or writing skills of standardized English. Sorry if this offends you but it is true.

Language is a tool. And like any other tool, it's value is a function of the intent and purpose of those who use it and whether or not there is some degree of agreement and consistency amougst HOW discourse is utilized.

But it seems some of us are attempting to place some faux intrinsic value on some form of language while denying such to others. And the these delineations have a predictably FAMILIAR trajectory.

No reasonable person would argue that on some level we all must be able to effectively observe and publish in a form of English to the powers that be will understand and accept. (Btw, I WOULDN'T refer to such as "Standard English" because I'm not sure that exists anymore. Don't believe me. Ask the British whether or not we Americans utilize "Standard English" and see what they say.).

But I live in the Chicagoland area, which is, with perhaps the exception of NYC, the most racially-ethically diverse metropolitan area of the country. I observe foks speaking English in every conceivable dialect. Here, you can almost tell which area of the city one lives by how he-she speaks.

So I'm always flummoxed by uniquely-biased consternation over Black foks maintaining their own manner of English. I find there to be a racist and classist element to it.

And there are no advantages to being linguistically shackled to Ebonics with no articulation, comprehension or writing skills of standardized English. Sorry if this offends you but it is true.

Obviously, you misunderstood my position. I'm not endorsing that Blacks speak Ebonics in the workplace, communicating with perfect strangers and the like - there's a time and place for everything. Nor am I endorsing that every person who lives in this country should have a solid grasp of the language and speak well, but Blacks are the exception.

Speaking, reading, and writing well are all vital communication skills that EVERYONE should take the time to hone as they can only be to one's benefit. But the fact is, there are more poor Whites in this country than poor Blacks, and, as a group, those poor Whites do more butchering of American English with incorrect pronounciation and improper grammar and syntax than poor Blacks do as a group. Take a stroll through the South and visit the backroads and listen to some Hillbillies converse. You'll hear more "ain'ts" and "y'alls" and "he don'ts" and "gonnas" and "they chirrun" and gerund-dropping and mumbling than you'd ever hear in any inner city. I'm not talking about local dialect or accent or a Southern drawl, I'm talking about outright poor English by those who did not, do not, have the means to receive much in the way of a formal education. I lived in the South for three years, and I wish I had a nickel for every poor, functionally illiterate White I encountered.

So am I advocating that Blacks shouldn't learn strong communication skills? Absolutely not. Of course they should. My position is that this is not a racial/ethnic problem. This is an economic and class problem that can be applied to impoverished people across the board. The use of poor grammar, syntax and diction is not exclusive to Blacks. For example, it bothers the hell out of me when poor White New Jersey natives pronounce "poker" as "polka," but I didn't start a thread about it.

Standard English involves the correct use of grammar which is the same between the British and American dialects. Also, a distinction can be made between Ebonics and slang; Ebonics is carelees speech and slang is colorful speech.

Could it be that maybe you are noticing how Black ppl mispronunciate words more?? Or could it be that when white ppl mispronunciate words you don't notice?

Why is it that we as Black ppl are so quick to notice eachothers shortcomings but frequently overlook white ppl's? Why are Whites(and other non-blacks) so quick to notice Black ppl's shortcomings but frequently overlook their own.

Why are poor uneducated white ppl celebrated??(Rednecks) But poor, and uneducated Black ppl are "scorned" in every aspect of society?? I hear alot of white ppl mispronunciated words just as much if not more than Black ppl. But no one is calling them on it!!

And Cynique, Mzuri and Nels aren't doing shyt to help Black ppl but sitting and "looking down on them" with the same hateful scorn that racist white ppl do, with their stupid, Black, Bill Cosbyish, Burgeousy, attitudes.

The Reason That We Notice Black Folks Is Because We Are Already Downtrodden Yet We Make Things Worse For Ourselves With The Ghetto Talk, Gestures And Mannerisms. Like Niggas Wearing Their Pants Halfway Down Their Asses.

I Have To Sound White In My Business Dealings Otherwise The People I Do Business With Won't Deal With Me. Why? Because White People Are Fucking Racists!!!

In Order For Us To Get Ahead - We Have Got To Do Better!!! And Stop Making Bullshit Excuses About How White People Can't Talk Either!!! Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right!!!

Again, Mzuri you show your stupidity everytime you open your mouth. It's funny that you would equate "talking white" with speaking "standard" English. That right there lets me know that you have been drinking the nector of "White Racist Ideology".

Also, the fact that you would make such an unfounded, and erroneous attack at Black ppl and there "Ghetto" mannerisms when the majority of Black ppl don't look/act like that also tells me that you have some serious Michael Jackson, David Duke issues as well.

GET A LIFE!!!

Wrong as usual, SS. You're the one that's stupid. I sound like a white person, not because of the manner in which I speak, but because of the tone of my voice. And I speak proper American English. (When I speak Ebonics I sound like a white person trying to sound Black.)

Plus I know the difference between "their" and "there"

Where does this get anybody? All is does is pacify black folks and provide them with excuses to fail. You totally lack perspective and you are an irrational thinker.

US - This is NOT a Black/white issue. White people aren't the ones who are killing each other daily with shotguns. And last time I checked, white people don't come to us for jobs and aren't dependent upon us for their livelihoods. Half the white man population isn't in prison, can't get a job, hooked on phonics, HIV positive, dopesmoking, gangmember, wannabe pimps. White people aren't at the bottom of the food chain and they don't have anywhere near the problems that we Black folks have.

So a dumb white motherfucker can drool, stutter, stammer, sputter, bobble and faint - shit that motherfucker could be a deafblindmute - it doesn't have shit to do with the fact that when Black folks don't speak properly, it has a negative impact upon Black folks. Not white ones.

I think Nels, who started this thread, needs to be reminded that this is not a B/W issue, not moi. Apparently, Nels sees it as such. I see this as a socio-economic issue. But Nels insists upon making this a "Black thing," so I insist upon showing him/her that it is not by questioning the reverse.

And it's no secret that Whites control this country. It's also not a secret that Whites can be as you described, yet still exceed Blacks of similar conditions. Further, it's no secret that the actions of one dumb nigger affects how all Blacks are perceived, whereas the negative actions of Whites reflects those of the particular individual alone.

I don't believe Nels' intentions are as benevolent as yours, Mzuri. Based on what you've posted, you're pointing out that Blacks need to get their shit together. And you're right. However, based on what Nels has posted, s/he's pointing out that Blacks are shit. And s/he's wrong. Just so we're on the same page here, that's what I'm debating.

US - There's really nothing to debate. I probably shouldn't be partaking of this conversation anyway because I'm OCD and a stickler for proper usage.

I go NUTS when someone says "I was taken back" instead of "I was taken aback," or "irregardless" and other minor misuses of the vocabulary. Things that most people probably don't even notice is incorrect. And I make typos here, but any written communications of mine (e-mails and snail mails) are flawless. I will spend hours proofreading and double-checking my work, and there's always a dictionary nearby. Shit, I spend hours on my posts here as if I have nothing else to do.

"irregardless"

I'm w/you on that one, Mzuri! Hate it! Other pet peeves:

"mines"
"there" for "their" (and vice versa)
"your" for "you're"
"up under" (???)

Illogical expressions and errors in expressions get to me as well: Like when someone says that a person "did a complete 360" when they mean "did a complete 180."

Punctuation errors irk me, too. One of my favorite books of all time is "Eats, Shoots and Leaves." If I ever teach again, I am making sure all of my students buy and read it! (ALL of my students: I don't care what race/ethnicity they are.)

I know, I know: I need to obsess about more important things! :-)

I give more weight to the way a person looks than to the way he/she speaks or sound.... We'd be fooling ourselves if we think most people don't. The eyes are ALWAYS the FIRST judge, and oftentimes the most overwhelming.

Enchanted - We already know that irregardless is in the dictionary. This is nothing new.

You need to go take The Unofficial Thumper's Corner I.Q. Test.

I'm always amused when a person whose intention is to express their disinterest about something, says they "could care less" instead of they "couldn't care less". And "mines" instead of "my" makes me cringe, too, Yvette, and ditto, Mzuri, to being dismayed by those how say "ax" instead of "ask".

Mzuri, Yvett and Cynique, all three of y'all be right!! I don't be likin' bad English either! Ok..Ok...I know I'm probably on of the worst offenders here for syntax and grammatical errors (I'm lazy, I just write, never recheck for errors, post and never look back) but I promise to improve in 2007. U_S I think perhaps you may be a little sensitive about this subject. Black Americans (as a group) have a very distinctive way of speaking. Unfortunately, for a large number, that way of speaking is not always advantageous for them since it not only affects their communication abilities (in the broader society) but it also spills over in to the area of writing skills.

Yes, there are Hill Billy, Southern hicks and South Boston whites who hack the English language also. But these whites do not represent whites as an entire group who speak North American English. Have you ever noticed when certain people are said to speak well or speak good English, they are usually black! Why? If good English skills was characteristic of the group, why would anyone say such nonsense?

White people as a group, are never thought of as having poor English skills. Unfortunately, that's not necessarily the case for American blacks. And for the record, the manner in which one speaks English is not genetic! It is an acquired and acculturated skill. And can be modified. It's up to the individual if they desire to do so.

But you are correct, black people are not the only ones who have questionable language skills, but they are the only ones who have openly and brazenly declared and embraced their own brand of non-standardized restrictive English -Ebonics. Go figure...

Well, you seem to be doing pretty darn good to me Ms. Cynique. But if you are concerned about spelling errors, load the Google bar to your browser. It comes with a free spell checker.
