I just rewatched Training Day over the holidays. I remember when brother Denzel won the Oscar for it some people complained that it took Denzel playing an evil criminal before he got recognized by the Oscars. I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on this.....

I personally think it was a great performance.

I thoroughly enjoyed Denzel's performance in Training Day and I think it was silly of Black foks to lament his getting an Oscars for portraying a criminal.

In fact, I think Denzel playing against his usual type casting gave the movie it's energy and zip. Were "Alonzo" played by somebody else, the movie probably would not have had it's zip and edge.

It was a great performance
But I can't help wondering why Hollyweird gave him an oscar and not for Malcolm X
Could it be they are some sick, twisted F***d up racists?
Why, Birth of a Nation, no!

Chris,

They gave Pacino the Oscar for Scent of a Woman. And the word is they gave it to Pacino because he'd been jobbed out of Oscars for BOTH of Godfather I & II.

Some might even say Denzel got the Oscar for Training Day (when many thought Russell Crowe's performance in A Beautiful Mind was the best acting performance) to make up for the one he deserved for Malcolm X.

Malcolm X was a horrible movie and Malcolm X was on the racist side himself until his last years when he changed his mind about some things.

Yeah he definitely deserved the Oscar for Malcolm X. But how could Hollyweird handle a movie that stars a strong righteous pro-black man who actually leaves behind his love for white whores and instead turns to strong dark skinned black women? Amerikkka's not allowed to reward images like that.

Enchanted,

Malcolm's family was completely destroyed by White foks. And he was rescued by a religious sect that taught him the White man is the Devil. It's a MIRACLE he eventually learned to transcend his prior experiences and teachings to learn to love and embrace Whites.

Lola,

Not to defend Hollyweird, bu Denzel has won not one but TWO Best Acting Oscars.

Clint Eastwood hasn't won 2. Neither has Al Pacino. Neither has Gene Hackman. Neither has Robert Duvall. Nor have several other GREAT White male actors...who've been acting LONGER than Denzel has.

In fact, the only active male Actor who's won 2 Oscars is Robert DeNiro. And his list of film credits is probably TWICE that of Denzel's.

Denzel has been GREATLY honored by Hollywood.

Enchanted,

And Oscar is an Oscar. Dayam whether it's Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor.

One of each is still MORE than what almost all OTHER actors - Black, White or Yellow - will EVER see in one lifetime.

Doberman, Yes, Yes, YES! Whoopi DESERVED that Oscar for TCP BIGTIME. That bullshit Best Supporting Actress she won for "Ghost" was to make up for the academy robbing her previously. I'm still mad.

Halle Berry's Oscar win was a joke! She's a pretty girl, but can't act worth a damn. Now I hear she's about to cut an album. Good Lord! I can't wait to hear this shit. She should have stuck to beauty pageants. Like I said, I'm still mad.

Doberman, you never gave us a report on your week-end visit to Chi-town. Did you have fun?
Yes, Denzel's performance in training day was a tour de force but do you recall the rumblings at the time about how he and Halle were both given Oscars for playing black characters who debased themselves. For some reason, the academy snubbed all of the good acting perfromances in the
"Color Purple" as well as the director. There were rumblings back then, too, about how bad black men were portrayed in this movie.

Urban-Scribe, Halle's Oscar win was an idea who's time had come. All that was required was that a black actress give an adequate performance which I think Halle did. The role she played wasn't a particularly demanding one. Like a lot of actresses, Halle's looks seem to prejudice people against her. She's almost like Osama, a lot of black people view them with a jaudiced eye for some reason.

That's the thing, why give it to a Black (although some would argue her Blackness) actress who really didn't merit an Oscar? I think that's a bigger slap in the face to Blacks. I could've happily seen Ms. Goldberg with that Oscar for her TCP performance, or even Diana Ross for "Lady Sings the Blues," or even Diahann Carroll for "Claudine," but not Halle for "Monster's Ball." It was a forgettable performance at best.

But, I guess it's like you said, when Black actresses were turning out Oscar calibre performances, the Academy wasn't ready for them.

LOL @ Cynique!!

Denzel was not robbed of his Oscar for the Hurricane, Kevin Spacey deserved his Oscar for American Beauty. Training Day was out of character for Denzel--he usually plays heroes, freedom fighters or family men. He was bad ass in this movie. The only part that moved me in Monster's Ball was Halle's grieving scene (over the loss of her son). That seemed real. That sex scene looked real though! LMAO!! And poor Eric Benet wasn't gettin' any at home from her at the time. LOLOLOLOL!

Fortified,

The reason that sex scene looked real is because Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry actually did have sex in that scene. It wasn't prolonged sex but he did actually penetrate her for a few seconds. He is very attracted to biracial black girls and was in fact married to one before - her name is Cynda Williams.

"...Halle's Oscar win was an idea who's time had come. All that was required was that a black actress give an adequate performance which I think Halle did. The role she played wasn't a particularly demanding one."

I agree. Her performance was fine but not stunning or overwhelming -IMO. She did what she could with the role. I've seen worse -much worse.

"Like a lot of actresses, Halle's looks seem to prejudice people against her."

Interesting you should say that. I have noticed this also. I think she is an attractive woman but she seems to attract a lot of negative and caustic digs from a number of blacks. Not sure why. Can anyone explain it?

"She's almost like Osama, a lot of black people view them with a jaudiced eye for some reason."

Good point. But again, can anyone explain why...??

It could be because she can't act and yet is always in movies. We'd prefer to have black people like Denzel in the public eye, people we can feel proud of.
