This weekend I went to see "Medea". Technically, it was Friday mid-day, but apparently so many people took off of work that day that it felt like a Saturday. o_O.
Tyler Perry never fails! Finally, a movie that didn't compromise itself to cater to white audiences. To be honest,I did not see one white face in that film. And it apparently wasn't nessecary, since some of the ppl in the theater were white.

During the credits Medea began commenting on the viewers in the Audience bringing their babies to the movie...and THERE WERE couple folks in the room with babies(We could hear them crying)! Perry SURE knows his own people, Doesn't he?! LOL!

And on a serious note, It maintains the nice balance of comedy and drama that the stage play had. Oh and let's just say it features a message and happy ending that only black people can understand. ;)
You know you have a good movie when people stand up from their seats and applaud. ^^'
It's already pissing off white critics and suburban "whiggers" for not being the typical ghetto-romance they want us to make for them. But it's not for them--it's for US.

I think Tyler Perry's drag character is insulting to black women, but apparently I am in a minority.
The next time somebody throws you up against the wall and frisks you for your gun or asks if you smoke weed, then you know who to thank. |

I don't enjoy the "drag" part either, Chris.
But I like MADEA.
I don't like the drag characters by Martin Lawrence and others---who so obviously HATE black women.
Tyler's films profess a profound love for black women and a desire on his part to take up for them.
This is why so many black women support him.
Granted, the quality of his work is low-brow, but still, he is loving of black women's images and inner feelings.
He strives to make sure they're NOT INVISIBLE.
Cicely Tyson and Maya Angelou are also featured prominately in the film.

Well, I'm glad that he did the part in drag only because it's an over the top, perhaps somewhat stereotypical character. If a black woman had played the part, it would probably be typecasting (putting a black woman in such a role because "that's how they are").
But since a man in drag did it, perhaps people will see that the character isn't real, but that it's a comedy PERFORMANCE that's meant to be over the top and stereotypical.
Thanks, Roxie, I'm looking forward to this movie now myself. I'll wait to buy it, because I don't take my baby to the movie. LOL
I always wait for it to hit blockbuster, because I KNOW my son isn't sitting down for 2 hours. |

I saw the play live. (which featured scores of beautiful black women of all shades and from all walks of life). I saw it with my mother and sister and we enjoyed it very much. It was hilarious (!) and none of us were offended; infact, we were pleased with his evenhanded representation of black women. If the movie is anything like the play, it should be more than worth the time/money. |

I know that some women are like that, but with so many movies today, they don't want to put black women in the movie unless they're some over the top domineering mama figure or "baby mama" figure. The MAJORITY of black women are neither, but we don't hear enough about them.
Most popular modern movies with a black man in the lead has him either with a domineering mother who's slapping him or is raising him as a single mother, or with a jealous girlfriend/baby mama who's always hassling him. I'm sorry, but I'm getting tired of hearing about these 2.
Tyler Perry, being a man in drag, took the "stereotypical domineering mother figure" and made it into a performance, and allowed the real women to play softer, sweeter, more vulnerable roles. These are the women we don't hear from often enough.
The first time I saw the preview, I laughed hard when I saw him on the bus, grabbing some boy and threatening to beat him up. It reminded me of my great grandmother who weighed maybe 90 pounds with her clothes on and was maybe 85 when she died, but she would kick your ass if she had to. |

The movie was EXCELLENT and him dressing in DRAG is besides the point (its called acting). Everyone can relate to a Soulful Grandma like Madea who doesn't take shit from anyone. Black folks can never give one another praise ....instead we talk shit about one another. Give the brotha' a round of applause, he came up from his homeless situation to what he is now. I commend Tyler Perry and his FABULOUS cast. STOP! hatin' and get your own ..........I would love to critique what you have to offer Chris. |

Chris, I am too young to remember Flip Wilson but I know there's a HUGE difference between Martin Lawrence's portrayal of black women and Tyler Perry's one. Martin does it to make fun of these women.. so people can laugh AT these women. Tyler does it so people can know them, love them, and be a part of them. It's almost like sharing your roots with someone so that they can know what it's like to be home. Most people loved, UNDERSTOOD, and have cherished a woman like Medea before; but for those who haven't, Tyler presents one for them--and they are honored, I'm sure. Because he does it in a way that brings honor.. respect. As for having a real black woman play the part, I don't think ANYONE could do it like he does. That's the magic of Tyler Perry. He does it better.. more responsibly than anyone, male or female, could. |

For those of you who weren't around when Flip Wilson performed as "Geraldine" - it was pure comedy - it was an act on his comedy variety show. Geraldine would walk around the set flaunting her stuff and her main line was "What You See Is What You Get!" and he was totally hilarious. It was so funny that Flip had difficulty maintaining his composure trying to keep from laughing about it himself. Of course I was just a baby back then so that's all I remember about it, but I don't think you could compare Geraldine with anyone else. It was one of a kind. |

Flip Wilson's Geraldine was sassy and coy. Meadea is more in the vain of Aunt Esther on Sanford and Son, or Jamie Foxx's alter-ego Wanda on the now defunct black comedy series "In Living Color". They were both broad caricatures of neck-workin, hand-on-their-hip, gun-totin ebonic-speaking black females with super attitude. This Meadea movie opened number one at the box office with a take of 30 million, and I'm sure her character was the main attraction for the huge black turn out. |

I'll likely NEVER see any of the Meadea movies. I'm happy Tyler's project have provided work for Black actors and actresses. But I just don't get the lure of transvestitism. I can't get over the fact I'm watching some sillya$$ man in a dress.
And what I find interesting is there is some much more interest in men portraying women than there are women portraying men. |

I see a lot of issues being discussed here. Now, I say again that I have not seen any of Mr. Perry's productions, so I cannot comment on whether or not they are uplifting or anything else.
I understand, though, why people are dismayed that the film versions must continue to feature him in drag to play the main character. On stage, I can see a little more--he (T.P.) was the draw. But now he has created this character that many people like. Why not cast a Black woman in the role for the theatrical versions? There are SO many with so much talent and very few vehicles for displaying it. (Personally, I'd vote for the woman who plays the nurse on "Scrubs.")
Instead, there is so much distraction about "a Black man in drag" that many can't even get to discussing the human-ness of the character.
Many of you talk a lot about authenticity. So, I am confused: How is a man, playing a Black woman, more/as authentic than a Black woman playing a Black women? Are older Black women so generic that anyone can play us? |

This thread is so fascinating to me...because I am usually at the front of the line COMPLETELY DISGUSTED by this type of casting.
I totally despise Martin Lawrence now--and I've noticed the deliberate Minstrel/BlackFace HATEFULNESS towards black women in these caricatures...this being a vehicle that can be claimed to be innocent.
Jaime Foxx as WANDA really was a cruel and hateful rebuke of black women--and ultimately, all black people...for those smart enough to see deeper.
As for Tyler Perry, though...I LOVE his films.
I don't think Madea is meant to be "authentic" AT ALL. She's really a country Goddess.
I believe Tyler's homosexual (though I don't know that).
And I believe that whoever his grandma/Nana was--he never got over losing her. He insists on "channeling" her....or more likely, a COMPOSITE of southern black women he's grown up with and knew and loved.
I personally, as a black woman, feel LOVED by his portrayals of MADEA and Black women and by the messages in his movies.
I have to admit--watching the first movie--I never once saw Madea as a "man". Perry, to me, is more convincing as this old woman than as the 2 men he plays in the film.
Again---as "low brow" and sitcomy as his humor and scripts are, I can't remember a time when I've seen Black women so honored, acknowledged and presented as MULTI-dimensional and "Human" on screen before.
Of course this could be done better....but right now, he's the only one bringing it.
I love it.

When this performance takes place, you do not see a a matronly Black man dress in drag--you see Medea--which is what makes it so of magical. I surprised my older sister and mother when I took them to see the play. I delibrately withheld the fact that Medea was really a man so I could see the look on their faces when it was annouced--THEY WERE SPEECHLESS.

His depiction of a gentle yet stern black woman was enhanced by the character's wit, charm, intelligence and durability. That, along with his inspirationally impressive staging of beautiful black women from all walks of life, as supporting leads, is what effected those stereotypes.

There was a certainly poignancy about Jamie Foxx's Wanda character, so much so that at the end of the skits that featured her, when she'd affect a sad face and utter her signature: "I just wanted to rock his world" line as yet another man got away, the whole audience would release a loud collective sigh in sympathy with her. About Medea there is a thuggishness which, although funny, is rather inappropiate for somebody portraying a grandmother. |

Meadea, Wanda, Aunt Esther, and Shanaynay are all characters that I think are hysterical--phuckin hysterical at that--and while I don't (personally) know or interact with many black women like these characters in everyday life, I have come across a few in my lifetime. I also think so many people are open to tv and films with certain characters because, on some level or another, they can relate.

I never wrote that I think Shanaynay represents all black women--but I have met a few black women like that in my lifetime--and you have, too. And while the white-owned media, in general, doesn't always give black women eqaul representation, we, as consumers, have the right to pick and choose what we watch and give our MONEY to. True, Tonya (in regards to Beverly Hills 90210 programs etc.)--that's why I wrote that people can pick and choose what they give their money (and time as well) to--in order to produce change. Nevertheless, those characters are funny (to me) and I know better that they don't represent black women as a whole. Maybe that's why my perspective is different and I don't find them offensive. But I do understand how some people can be bothered by such as well as how some people feel as I do.
I'm asking your opinion--not for you to speak for all black people. As a black woman, how do you think the unequal and misrepresentation of black women in the media will change? Do you think programs like Girlfriends, The Cosby Show (though older), Bernie Mac, My Wife and Kids, That's So Raven, Steve Harvey (sp?--I think that's what it is called) and The Parkers (to name a few) are programs that accurately reflect the everday lives of Black people in AMERICA (in general)? If yes, why? If not, why?
Anyone else, please respond with your opinion as well!

One letter writer claims he "stole" his act from an Atlanta area drag act. Another noted how expertly he dodged the sexual orientation issue on Oprah.

I don't see how you can claim Quincy Jones is not a "Mulatto-IST" when he's reproduced 5 or 6 mulatto children with FOUR different WHITE women.
And I think you'll find that Harry Belafonte has been AT LEAST as active in promoting Black affairs as Jones.
Belafonte for decades been as active as ANY African American in promoting the interests, welfare, art, etc. of Africa, the Caribbean and the African Diaspora.
Belafonte was a confidante and advisor of Martin Luther King Jr. He paid for MLK's funeral and Coretta's rent after MLK was slain.
And Belafonte even quoted your beloved Malcolm X when he very aptly referred to Colin Powell and Condi Rice as "house Negroes" who "lived in the house with master [Bush]".
Quincy Jones has NEVER stepped out against the White power structure like that. If anything, he has helped buttress and GREATLY benefit from it.
For example: Quincy Jones is the founder/publisher of Vibe Magazine, the prime media promoter of the very Hip-Hop music and culture that YOU have quite eloquently criticized.
Btw: Is it more than just a coincidence that Michael Jackson began to change his appearance from Black man to White female right around the time he started hanging out with Quincy "I sure do LOVE me some WHITE women" Jones (late 70's - mid 80')? |

You're right.
I just don't like Belafonte by intuition.
I feel far more threatened by him than by Jones.
Ultimately, these men have set the wrong example for our children and should not be "black" leaders no matter how they sympathize with black suffering. Jones has not positioned himself as a leader.
Belafonte has-----and truly, furthermore, someone MUST
absolutely MUST, begin to publicly denounce the messages that these type of men transmit to Black children and to society in general.
These men are innocent and are following the examples of their colorstruck Pre-fathers....but still...if we are not to end up like the American Indian, someone has to publicly attack this behavior and mark it as WRONG---
just as we eventually had to make the successful African man see that "slavery" was wrong, no matter how rich and prestigious it made him feel.
Because I'm an outsider, but am growing in power...I'm able to make those attacks with the force that is necessary.
I may be destroyed later, ABM....but even if I am....my death will only AMPLIFY my message.

While Cynique is more than capable of "speaking" for herself, I just thought I'd bring this particular point to the "discussion". If Kola is truly about loving "authentic" blackness and advocating for that, then it would just be. It would not be about hating and accusing other of self-hate just because they don't hold her global idealolgy. Kola "envisions a world of Denzel Washingtons." Maybe Cynique envisions the same thing as well, I really don't know. However, the main difference between Kola and Cynique that I have seen thus far is, Kola is unwilling to accept that the world will never be a world of "Denzel Washingtons"--as it should not be a world of Jude Laws, either. But what it is, is a world full of many different types of people--from color to faith--that have the right to live, love and worship as they choose--which Cynique understands and accepts. This does not mean she, as well as other Black people who think as she does, passively tolerate racism/colorism, either. Which is always a misconception. Blacks, mostly at the hands of other Blacks, have a harder time being considered an individual than other colors. I have always found that interesting--especially considering the time we live in.
I think every adult human being--no matter gender or color--must come to this conclusion in order to survive and thrive. No one will ever totally control what others think or do.

This comment kind of reminds me of a common feeling that some black women share in regards to black men who date/marry interracially, which is, if black men date/marry interraically, that's fine. However, they (the black women who feel like this) don't want the dating/marrying "out" to be blamed on them (ex. bw are fat, lazy, unattractive, etc.) Bascially, just be about what you want to be about--but don't say you're doing it because I'm inadequate.
The very same notion can be applied here. If it's about "respecting" blackness, it's not about disrespecting anything else.

What the hell is she talking about. Cynique has said quite adamantly and quite a few times that the direction we are going in is that we will soon all be mulattoes/mixed, and there's no point in trying to change it.
A world of many different types of people is one thing and one I can support, but when those different types no longer include African blackness, but rather a light-haired/light-eyed hybrid that's the "closest we can get" to African because full black people no longer exist because African descended people PUSHED for it to happen, that's SELF-hate if I ever heard of it.
That's the best it can be put. So your posts are completely ignorant and prejudicial.

My dislike for you, Cynique has NOTHING TO DO with whether you're "black enough" or not. Hell, I'm yellow myself and consider MYSELF black, whether or not other people agree with it.
I can't stand dumb fucks who push for WHITENING black people, and that's whether you're dark or light skinned. |
