ASSOCIATED PRESS:
MEXICO CITY - President Vicente Fox refused to apologize Monday for saying Mexicans in the United States do the work that blacks won't — a comment widely viewed as acceptable in a country where blackface comedy is still considered funny and nicknames often reflect skin color.
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City had raised the issue with the Mexican government. "That's a very insensitive and inappropriate way to phrase this and we would hope that (the Mexicans) would clarify the remarks if they have a chance," Boucher said.
Fox's spokesman, Ruben Aguilar, said the remark has been misinterpreted as a racial slur. He said the president was speaking in defense of Mexican migrants as they come under attack by the new U.S. immigration measures that include a wall along the U.S.-California border.
Stung by the U.S. crackdown on illegal immigrants, many Mexicans — including Mexico City's archbishop — said Fox was just stating a fact.
"The president was just telling the truth," said Celedonio Gonzalez, a 35-year-old carpenter who worked illegally in Dallas for six months in 2001. "Mexicans go to the United States because they have to. Blacks want to earn better wages, and the Mexican — because he is illegal — takes what they pay him."
But the Rev. Jesse Jackson and the Rev. Al Sharpton, two black U.S. civil rights activists, said Fox should apologize. "His statement had the impact of being inciting and divisive," Jackson said.
Lisa Catanzarite, a sociologist at Washington State University, disputed Fox's assertion. She said there is intense competition for lucrative working class jobs like construction and that employers usually prefer to hire immigrants who don't know their rights.
"What Vicente Fox called a willingness to work ... translates into extreme exploitability," she said.
Fox made the comment Friday during a public appearance in Puerto Vallarta, saying: "There's no doubt that Mexican men and women — full of dignity, willpower and a capacity for work — are doing the work that not even blacks want to do in the United States."
Responding to the criticism Monday, Aguilar read a statement expressing Fox's "enormous respect for minorities, whatever their racial, ethnic or religious origin."
"The purpose (of the comment) was none other than to show the importance Mexican workers have today in the development and progress of U.S. society," Aguilar said, repeating a statement released Saturday.
He refused to comment further, saying only that Fox would "intensify his diplomatic efforts to protect the integrity of the Mexicans living in that country."
The dispute reflects Fox's growing frustration with U.S. immigration policy and deteriorating relations between the two nations.
The Mexican government was expected to send a diplomatic letter to the United States on Monday protesting recent measures that include requiring states to verify that people who apply for a driver's license are in the country legally, making it harder for migrants to gain amnesty, and overriding environmental laws to build a barrier along the California border with Mexico.
The measures have been widely criticized in Mexico, where residents increasingly see the United States as adopting anti-migrant policies.
Even Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, the archbishop of Mexico City, criticized the U.S. policy as ridiculous and defended Fox's comments, saying: "The declaration had nothing to do with racism. It is a reality in the United States that anyone can prove."
Gilberto Rincon, president of the National Council to Prevent Discrimination, said the statement was "unfortunate." But, speaking after releasing a report on racism in Mexico, he said it reflected outdated language more than a racist attitude.
Fox has championed the rights of minorities and the disabled and has led a successful campaign to amend the constitution to make discrimination a crime.
George Grayson, a Mexican expert with the College of William & Mary in Virginia, said the dispute will hurt Fox's campaign to liberalize immigration laws, adding that it shows "once again how tone deaf Mexico's president is with respect to the United States."
While Mexico has a few, isolated black communities, the population is dominated by descendants of the country's Spanish colonizers and its native Indians. Comments that would generally be considered openly racist in the United States generate little attention here.
One afternoon television program regularly features a comedian in blackface chasing actresses in skimpy outfits, while an advertisement for a small, chocolate pastry called the "negrito" — the little black man — shows a white boy sprouting an afro as he eats the sweet. Many people hand out nicknames based on skin color.
Victor Hugo Flores, a 30-year-old bond salesman, cringed when asked what he thought of Fox's comment, but said it isn't too different from popular sayings celebrating what Mexicans see as a strong work ethic among blacks.
"It was bad, but it really isn't racist," he said. "Maybe the president shouldn't have said it. But here we say things like, 'He works like a black person,' and it's normal."

I don't think Black and Mexicans should start squabbling over this.
Yes, what Fox says is dumb and ignant. But the REAL culprits and beneficiaries of illegal immigration are the WHITE owned/controlled companies that hire them over Americans citizens, including many Blacks...and Whites.
So rather than descend into name-calling, we shoud focus instead how to stop the flood of illegals into the country and manage such in a way that all Americans benefit from their coming here. |

Although as a person living in Southern Cali....I'm really enjoying watching the Mexican MAJORITY now turn their backs on the blacks (who welcomed them and kissed their asses for so many years)...and watching the look of "disillusionment" as the blacks find out what the Mexicans REALLY think of them----as we elect a Mexican Mayor and recover from Cinco De Mayo.
There's nothing like having your own family, and after all the WARNING and CURSING I've done to California blacks---and them ignoring my love----I'm glad to see the DAILY "comments" and slights springing up around here.

No offense to you, but as far as I'm concerned, the Mexicans are free to do with California whatever they want. Hell, via the San Andreas Fault, 1/2 of Cali will sink into the Pacific Ocean inside of 100 years anyway.
Though what I find interesting to consider is if these Mexicans are as a whole such industrious and hardworking people as everyone seem to enjoy saying, why must they come to America to make such manifest?
Why can't they be just as productive in their homeland?

KUDOS as well to the Vietnamese for building Fountain Valley into a THRIVING community.

I'm proud myself of the Mexicans taking back California.
This is, technically, THEIR LAND and was a major part of their country.
This is also the WEALTHIEST state in the U.S., and would rank 5th in the world if it were a Nation by itself.
The "Black Americans"--if they were a NATION in the world---would rank 8th, which if they ever get some UNITY and DIRECTION "as a group"---could really change things worldwide for ALL BLACK PEOPLE.
But god forbid they should think like that. What with all the friendship and assimilat'n they OWE their "Brown brothers" and their "White" sponsors.

Even though "Civil Rights" for all minorities was won through the broken bones of mostly Black folks, most of the benefits went to others i.e jews, asians, etc. Most of these others were happy being second class citizens. Don't point a finger at the Mexican presidante but look at the three fingers pointing back at you. Why lie, Mexicans in California work really hard. They harvest food, do most of the work in the service industries, mow the lawns, build homes, etc. Wait untill they start woking at the docks in Long Beach, etc. AA's will be left with ball playing, singing, comedy. He could have EASILY been dead/gone/forgotten DECADES ago. I give him props for surviving even if I don't condone the methods by which he's done so.

Did you know that throughout the world, the birth rate of Whites is at either a zero or negative rate? There's isn't a nation in Western Europe that's producing more people than are dying. And even in the US, Whites are suffering increasing bouts of infertility.

Why should someone like Ice-T call himself BLACK or an African American??? Makes me wonder. He should be happy to call himself AFRO SAXON. There is absolutely NOTHING African in him or many others (throw in MJ, Beyonce, etc). The only reason the AFRO appears before the SAXON is because of the hair-do and not Africa. People with poor attitude in regards to their genetic relation with African people should all be happy with being called AFRO SAXONS. Their language, culture, diet, behaviour, religion, names, etc makes them more suitable in the SAXON category. They can even justify to themselves psychologically that they came from Europe by reading Ivan Van Sertima's famous book "African presence in Early Europe". Always try to be happy and nothing wrong with being AFRO SAXON. |

But I cussed Paul Mooney the fuck OUT during one of his Comedy Club routines in Hollywood.
He was up there calling "Pochahontas" a SELLOUT bitch because of the inaccurate cartoon movie that portrays her as an ADULT traveling with those two white explorers (in real life, she was only 12 and they were BOTH fucking her).
He then started calling plantation black women SELLOUT BITCHES.
I was seated at the FRONT TABLE with my "WHITE" male Jewish agent (who had brought me)-----and because MOONEY had been staring me down for like an hour, I felt that his "SELLOUT BITCH" routine was aimed at me.
He kept talking shit about Black Women and jumped up and asked--------"What about these SELLOUT black motherfuckers and these sellout White bitches???"
The AUDIENCE "Boooed" me---all except a group of black lesbians in the back.
Paul Mooney got ready to launch into his shit....
I SCRAI8 went the fuck off.
Cussed him so ribaldly and so bad---he came down off the stage (WITH a HUGE GRIN ON HIS FACE) and gave me the microphone.
The AUDIENCE ROARED with applause.
I turned on that audience and started cussing their fucking asses out, too. There was this "White-looking" black girl sitting with her "black man" and she had made some comment earlier----I zapped her "WHITE" ass and invited her to step forward and whoop MY ass.
It ENDED with Paul kissing and hugging me. He apologized....I said he APOLOGIZED to all the women of "Mother Africa" and said that he did not know that Pochohantas was only 12 and Sally Hemmings only 12 when they were being fucked by these White Men (who had ALL the power).
I sat back down and Paul ordered FREE BOOZE for my agent the rest of the night (**I didn't drink back then).
We stayed til about 2 in the morning. It was a trip.
But I sure did cuss that man something TUR-ble as my Nana would say.

Mexico has long cast its spell over us, its neighbor‹and alter ego‹to
the north. We share much more than a 1,950-mile-long border. We share a
history, exalt its food, and honor its literary luminaries. We cross
its borders in droves, heading for warm waters, shady zócalos, language
classrooms, open-air mercados, cousins¹ living rooms, and steep
temples. Mexico is in our collective blood. The Mexican-American affair
is a love story ripe for the telling.
MEXICO, A LOVE STORY will be more than a random collection of essays
about the adventures of women who have traveled or lived in Mexico. It
will be an anthology of personal narratives describing how Mexico has
shaped lives or influenced decisions, how the country has affected each
woman in life- or mind-altering ways. Writers with compelling true
stories will have an opportunity to help shape this tapestry of
journalism that will transcend the ordinary travelogue.
We are looking for essays by women that reveal some kind of love
affair with the country, its people, its cities, its ancient and
surviving civilizations, its stretches of open land and oceans, its
food. Women have always had a special relationship to place‹volumes
have been written on that subject. It is the distinctly female nature
of narratives in Mexico that will unite these stories. Experiences you
may have had in Mexico‹such as with love, death, identity,
self-discovery, aspirations, and culture shock‹may be universal, but in
this anthology they must be conveyed with a focus on the way they
inform women¹s lives.
Send us your ³love² stories on Mexico. We are looking for well-crafted
personal essays about not just what happened to you there, but how
Mexico shaped your worldview in some noteworthy way, how it seduced,
impacted your senses, changed you‹for the better or worse. We are
looking for diverse and unique perspectives. We want strong, developed,
first-person writing that goes beyond mass market journalism. We want a
diverse mix of voices‹humorous, unadorned, poetic, visceral‹as well as
a wide range of ages and races.
Some likely topics include:
€ Heritage and identity
€ Mother-daughter (or father-daughter) travel
€ A moving experience of the country¹s Catholicism (and/or ancient
religions) or with its indigenous cultures

Point taken, but in this instance it's not about what the mainstream thinks about us, but simply having our voices included and heard.
It's important that when someone heralds "WOMEN", it include all women. This is black women's beef with second-wave feminism--that it failed to be truly representative, and even worse the white feminists were either oblivious to or couldn't care less about their failure.
Fr'instance...if an alien came down to Earth and read a random sampling of mommy lit, he would think all mommies were white, middle-to-upper class, stay-at-home types.

Actually, Mahogany....there's TONS of Black women writers in Cali who could write quite a bit about Mexico.
IN FACT...you've given me an idea.
Thomas used to take me to Mexico so that I could walk around topless on the beach with him and my sons. The Mexican women would also be topless down there.
Maybe I'll write about that.
I also know plenty of Black women who've had love affairs with Mexicans here. The book does request those types of stories.
