Just the other day, someone was telling
me how SICK Johnnie Cochran was and that he
was staying out of public sight. I took it
as nothing more than gossip.

Now I see it was true.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., the charismatic attorney who became famous in the successful defense of football star O.J. Simpson on murder charges, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles of a brain tumor, spokespeople said.

Cochran began his career as a crusader against police abuses, often in cases involving black clients, but is best known for the trial that won a controversial acquittal for Simpson on murder charges in 1995.

Simpson was accused of murder in the June 12, 1994 stabbing deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman, and was acquitted despite what prosecutors described as a "mountain of evidence" against him.

In one of the defining moments of the trial, Simpson appeared unable to put on a pair of gloves connected to the double murder. Cochran famously admonished the jury, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit."

A statement from his family and law firm said he died at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time. It said funeral arrangements would be announced at a later date.

BIOGRAPHY OF JOHNNIE COCHRAN:

Although he has been well known in west coast law circles for many years, Johnnie Cochran (born 1937) entered the national spotlight as a member of O. J. Simpson's defense team.

Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. led the winning team of lawyers in the "trial of the century," and in the process became arguably the most famous lawyer in the world. Cochran's successful defense of former football great O. J. Simpson against charges of murder in the televised trial was followed by millions of Americans. Although his trial tactics are still sparking debate, his legal acumen and ability to sway a jury have characterized his legal career. In fact, the People v. O. J. Simpson is only the most recent and most visible of a string of Cochran's courtroom victories, some involving superstars such as Michael Jackson and others involving ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Ebony magazine once described Cochran as "a litigator who'd taken the cases people."

A POEM FOR JOHNNIE COCHRAN---writer unknown:

Birthdays do not end with death,
But last as long as love,
A maelstrom of memories
That grace and honor move.
And so we celebrate your day
By visiting your grave,
A place that you have left long since,
But is all that we have.

Dear spirit, come and join us here,
Your loved ones by your stone!
Come sweep across the barrier
To claim us as your own!

Happy birthday, dearest one!
Oh, happy, happy day!
Not even the most bitter night
Can take this joy away!

GOD REST THE KING!

I agree. Very beautiful poem and photos Kola.

I think Johnnie Cochran was a funny guy and he did a lot with his work to help the poorer blacks. He will be missed.

The tumor took him out early.
