The link you've inserted, doesn't seem to work.

I have looked the name up, found it under Amina WadUd :

I must say that I have seen on TV before a documentary where they did a short interview with a FEMALE IMAM, that was somewhere in Asia though.

here's another interesting article from Amina Wadud that I'm reading:
http://www.newint.org/issue345/legacy.htm

Apparently she has converted to Islam and was not born as a Muslim

"Furthermore, the Qur’an is emphatic that since Allah is not created then He/She/It cannot be subject to or limited by created characteristics, like gender. That Arabic grammar carries gender markers has led even the best Arab grammarians erroneously to attribute gender to the thing referred to. Modern feminist studies have analyzed this gender bias in language."

Hi Asherah,

Thanks for posting.

But here's a link to the story of WHAT HAPPENED at and after the prayer gathering.

ASHERAH,

TAKE NOTE:

Abeer Shagweer, 37, of Wyckoff was among the protesters.

"A woman can be an imam (a Muslim spiritual leader) in her family with her husband and kids, but we've never heard of this before," she said. "This is wrong."

---There are many Woman Imams, Ashera, but they do not lead the mosque in prayer.

I'm certain others have done it (just as others refused to give up their bus seats BEFORE Rosa Parks did it), but this is the first documented and planned, publicized staging of the act as a STATEMENT.

I don't know for sure whether this Asian female imam led the mosque in prayer or not, but yeah, when it happens, it's important that the whole world knows about it.

It's always irritating to hear of WOMEN who hold on to their masochistic beliefs, like that Abeer Shagweer. I think they just don't want to be confronted with their own dumbness and cowardice when REAL feminists who have the brains for it, speak up the TRUTH.

The story of Wadud made me think of Amma too. She is not Muslim, but Hindu and I read a biography of her where it was mentioned that she asked in a group, who of the women wanted to be a priest and so the female volunteers could immediately start with their ceremonies.
There have also been attempts to kill Amma on other occasions though.

http://www.amritapuri.org/cultural/temple/wpriest.htm

"To those who questioned what we were doing, Amma explained that we are worshipping a God who is beyond all differences, who does not differentiate between male and female."

“The following is a brief summary of the resolutions of the Amritavarsham50 Women’s Initiative. The M.A. Math resolves to promote awareness of the quality of Motherhood, which is inherent in both men and women. Only through awakening this quality can we sweep away the cobwebs of customs that trap and denigrate women. We have a twin focus: we want to help men to understand and integrate their feminine qualities so that they no longer abuse women, and we want to help women reclaim their true identity, especially in the workplace. Through education and counselling, we want to ensure that men and women feel themselves equal in value, and as respected partners in life. We want to abolish the prohibitions that prevent women officiating as priests.

"Our plan of action has 10 points:

"The first two points refer to gender awareness and education programmes. These target areas sensitive to the denigration of women, that is: religious, social customs, workplace practices and also environmental abuses against Mother Nature.

"The third point targets very harmful social customs: namely dowry, female feticide and infanticide. Concerted individual efforts within families are necessary to stop these abuses. Amma is marrying 108 poor couples without dowry to help get this point across, at least to her devotees. The ceremony is on Her birthday, the 27th.

“With points four and five we address the physical needs of abused women. We want to provide them safe havens and give care and counselling for young women; and give them more job training and employment.

“Point six aims at the education of men and boys. We are targeting the legal systems for young offenders. We feel that when a young man abuses a woman, especially for the first time, he should undergo spiritually based, educationally sound, corrective procedures rather than just punishment.

“With points seven and eight, we target the need to protect women in public spheres. We want to encourage media organisations to refuse to portray women as sexual objects. We want governments, commerce and industry to encourage dharmic values and allow training in the principles of Motherhood within their work spheres.

“With regard to Hindu temple religious customs, Amma is advocating that all places of worship, work towards engaging female priests.

“Lastly, with resolution 10, we call upon others to join with us in promoting the healing concept of Motherhood wherever they may be in any part of the world.
