Not surprised. Not happy either. Although, Arnold is an unknown in this arena so we'll just have to see what he does. Not as big a turn out as I wuold have thought - 49% I think. the anti recall folks were campaigning heavy in the black community. Phone ringing 6 - 8 times a day with recorded messages [I had Danny Glover, Jessie Jackson, Diane Finestine and Bill Clinton calling me - lol] folks going door to door. Even offering rides to the polls - I don't remember them doing that before around my house.

Hi Yukio,

Blacks are now less than 8% of California's population.

We have no voice at all here anymore really. Maxine Waters was the last strong voice we had, but now there simply is no base. She's kept in office by Latinos now, not AAs.

Blacks in California are also a different breed than blacks elsewhere. After Seattle, this is the interracial couple capital of the nation, so there isn't really a black community anymore. Cities like Compton, Watts and Inglewood are now predominately Latino. It's shocking to drive through Watts these days and look at the Watts Towers surrounded by Taco vendors. LOL

A recent study showed that Black males in interracial pairs tend to vote the "way of their partner's family"--which was usually a female characteristic in the past. They're still Democrat for the most part, but not necessarily concerned in the least with black issues per se. Their concerns are the issues facing their mate's family.

California's "Riverside County" has a HUGE Black Republican constituency. This is Ward Connerly country here. Larry Elders is also major here and is from Inglewood. You get the picture.

My wife and I are moving to New York fulltime after christmas. We have a home here in Los Angeles, an apartment in Wash. D.C. where she writes/teaches and an apartment in Brooklyn. We can't wait to get out of California.

The weather's beautiful here, though.

LGS:

You the nature of black politics is changing, and it is disrupting what was traditionally considered "black politics."

What are some of the causes? Migration, cultural assimilation, generational changes in political views, a lil of this a lil of that?

Where have the blacks who were in inglewood, compton, etc.. gone....and why did they leave? Are these neigborhoods, ie compton, inglewood, impoverished?

The state population of California is now 60% latino from Mexico.

Black females of college/childbearing age have left in record numbers due to the interracial boom in California, so there's a noticeable imbalance of black "youth". The males are noticable, but the females are hard to locate now.

I would call it cultural "assassination". I was here when we had Black Panthers at Berkeley and there was a strong black power movement in Los Angeles. Blacks were 19% just 20 years ago!! We held a lot of influence in the national elections, because if we wanted to, we could swing California.

But you wouldn't recognize this state now. Everything's written in Spanish, everybody speaks Spanish. Blacks live separated from one another.

Mixed unions dominate here and the men pretty much follow the politics as I told you of the wife's family. One very noticable fact, I think someone else mentioned this, is the fact that bi-racial children here do not identify as "black" like they did in the days when I was coming up. White women have support groups for these mixed kids and you never saw such confused, anti-black kids in your life! They teach these kids not to be black.

Many blacks who lived in Compton, Inglewood and Watts have either gone back east, down south, gone to Arizona or Houston or moved to an area in California called Moreno Valley that is mostly black now. It's in the desert.

The thriving, huge numbers of the Latinos and the growing number of Asians here, however, are what dominate California life and culture. Politically, the whites and latinos just back each other up and everyone else is left in the cold. Japanese, Chinese and Koreans have a lot of wealth out here, they're thriving. Vietmanese, on the other hand, are in poverty and have gangs.

As I said before, most blacks left out here don't care one way or other about "black issues". California blacks are a different breed from the rest of the nation, they cater to whites in my opinion.

One of the reasons we're leaving is my wife just couldn't stand it anymore. She said if she saw one more self-hat'n Uncle Tom! at the supermarket LOL. She's right, I couldn't dispute her. I play golf with quite a few Toms and they have no shame about it. They're committed Toms.

Those of us who still think and live as blacks in California are quickly moving out. My daughters all moved to the South and one son went to Chicago. The other two boys broke their mothers heart if you know what I mean.

They say Seattle and Portland are worse because there's even less blacks up there. It's really shocking to see for those of us who came up with the 1960's and the movements. I never thought I would feel that we went backward and that we failed, but I think we did. We've lost an enormous amount of political power and cohesiveness as a group. Others seem to be thriving.

What a bleak picture you paint. Do you have any explanation as to why this has happened? Why can't blacks escape from the bottom of the totem pole? Are they their own worst enemy? Do they, indeed, bear the curse of Ham????

Cynique, as I pointed out, my wife and I see a lot of positive energy and gains among blacks in D.C. and Brooklyn where we also have homes. I don't see this as a national "black" problem. Yukio asked about California politics.

California is a breed apart. Blacks here are very hard to describe, there is no unity or sense of BEING black.

I don't believe in the curse of Ham.

Call me a naysayer, LGS, but it kind of a sad commentary that we are not past the stage of being encouraged by a few scattered pockets of positive progress. The fact is, that Blacks have regressed. California might be a sign of things to come. Although there is not an overwhelming trend of black and white dating in Chicago, in other areas things are crucial and discouraging.

LGS:

I sympathize with your plight. Times have changed and, therefore, black people have culturally changed. Part of this phenomena has alot to do with what Mr.Immigrant addressed in another thread, which the fact that many blacks have discontinued allegiance to their blackness, which is really particular issues and their culture. Another, and obvious problem it seems from your post, is that since there has been black flight and asian and mexican immigration, black men behave politically as race-neutral or should i say nuetered citizens.

It sounds like multiculuralism had killed blackness in California.....

LET'S GET SERIOUS, YOU ARE RIGHT....INTERRACIAL SEXING IN CALIFORNIA IS ALSO THE CAUSE OF THE SPREAD OF MANY SEXUAL DISEASES AMONG BLACK FOLKS.

Thse "kneegrows' in this state ARE BEING DESTROYED THROUGH GENOCIDE THAT IS WELL PLANNED.

It is a shame that a state that was one of the PRECOLUMBIAN HOMELANDS OF THE BLACK RACE IS LOOSING ITS BLACK POPULATION.

SOMETHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT HOWEVER, MORE BLACKS ARE SETTLING CALIFORNIA FROM AROUND THE WORLD, EVEN WHILE THE BLACK AMERICAN POPULATION IS FLEEING THIS STATE THAT HAS BECOME NOTHING BUT A CONCENTRATION CAMP FOR BLACK PEOPLE AND A BREEDING GROUND FOR UNCLE TOMS AND SELLOUTS.
