Yukio:

I was under the impression that a large proportion of Puerto Ricans are of African descent. By virtue of the fact that they live in the Americas are they not African Americans?

Hmmmmmm......

CH, you've been reading too much of what i've written, assuming that you've made this conclusion based on my Pan Africanist's rhetoric.

I agree with you completely! But there are several problems with our(mine and your) perspective:-(1) it is a battle among nationalist, imperialist, racist rhetoric;(2)the way the term "african american" works in this country makes it a national identity not a continental identity, so that US blacks are African Americans and others are puerto ricans, jamaicans, trinidadian, etc, consequently a friend of a friend uses the term "Afri-US" instead of African American;(3)many puerto ricans will give lip service to their Boriqua(indigenous indian) heritage but not necessarily their african;(3) most people think as a nationality and if they think of a continental identity it will be based on locationa not location and ancestry, especially for those that don't want to be black, like many puerto ricans.

Of course, there are many light skinned puerto ricans that call themselves black, especially nuyoricans, since they've grown up with US blacks. And of course the darker skinned, kinky haired puerto ricans are much more clear about the dynamics of race, nationality, and culture.....they most claim them themselves as Black Puerto Ricans, as do Black Cubans, Domicans....they can not skate their ancestry as J-Lo attempts to!

Yukio:

As Yusual, Yu got me off track on what I originally started this thread for. What happened to Yu (personally) up there during the blackout? Can you give us a blow by blow of your adventures?

Hey Chris:

The is the first thread I've read in couple of weeks. I guess the title attracted me to this first. I had a LOT of web sites updates to do lately and Summertime is a real busy time as far as family and friends are concerned.

Yeah I was caught up in the mix during the blackout. I remember 1977 so I was particularly concerned. As it turned out it was like a big blcok party, people hanging out on the street late and having a good time. We enjoyed a rare look at the night sky and my neighboor even saw a shooting star.

I rode my bike to work so getting home was not a problem. We lost power for about 14 hours -- which wasn't even enough time to for the food in the refrigerator to defrost.

Speaking about Puerto Ricans: It is funny how, growing up in Spanish Harlem, completely color blind I was to Puerto Ricans. It did not matter to me if they had European, African, Indian or a combination of all of these characterists -- they were no different than I.

I was interested to hear your first-hand report on the blackout, Troy. The media engages in so much hype. I think the talking heads were actually disappointed that everybody didn't panic, and that chaos didn't ensue. The American public has a lot more aplomb than our "fearless" leaders give us credit for. These self-important prigs think they know what's best for the masses and that everyone will panic if told the truth about certain things, but nowadays people have started to become case-hardened and fatalistic, and tend to just take things in their stride.
