Why is it whenever I see and hear anything about Mike Tyson I feel as thought I have been both an unwitting conspirator and a voyeuristic witness to a heinous crime...where Tyson has been nearly as much the 'victim' as he has been the villain?

ABM: I'd hazard to guess that because he, like many other boxers who made millions for other people and wound up broke, is a big dummy who was bound to come to this unless some good people looked out for him. When stuff like this happens I feel like boxing ought to be outlawed--but nobody is holding a gun to these folks' heads, and he was a flying sob when he was on top. |

Chris, Of course you are right that Tyson is his own worse enemy. I never thought much of him even as boxer (the next great fighter that he defeats will be his first one). And really. The fight game, like most other professional sports, has never been about the welfare of the athlete. But what is particularly sad about boxers is for them to become successful they must endure so much head trauma that they likely don't retain enuff 'marbles' to mentally handle their other business. (I wonder if the smart & well-educated Robin Givens had loved Tyson and had been a REALLY strong woman, could she have saved him?) I can't help feeling as though that for the better part of 20 years almost everything about Tyson has been like gleefully watching a man in a beautiful sports car recklessly race, swerve then veer off the edge of mountainous cliff. And now we are all sort of callously picking over his messy remains. |
