Isn't it almost blissfully ironic that conservative Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor - a white woman who grew up during the hardscrabble of the Great Depression on a cattle ranch (where one was as likely to see an African American as someone living in Harlem might spy cacti and tumbleweed), and a Supreme Court appointee of the GOP's patron saint Ronald Reagan - done found religion and cast the deciding vote to help to maintain some form of Affirmative Action? |

O'Connor WAS a moderate, and this particular case helped to re-affirm this position where she seemed to waver; also, the affirmative action has alot to do with white women, who are as much the beneficiaries of affirmative action as black folk. |

Right, Yukio, Sandra was considered the swing vote and was middle-of-the road. I find interesting what she said about affirmative action being a thing of the past in 25 years. I think the day will come when skin-color will be incidental, mostly because AAs are no longer uptight about integration; they just want a "level playing field." |

Cynique: I think its much more than skin-color, since "race" is and has always been about political, social, cultural, and economic power. The only way, in my opinion, of it not being an issue, is if we and the political world forget that "race" is just about skin-color. BTW, i know what you think about these issues, but i had to give my 2cents...lol! ( i say this, since i think this discussion can return to a debate between personal effort{individual]} v. racism {structural}). |

Oops! "The only way, in my opinion, of it not being an issue, is if we and the political world forget that "race" is just about skin-color." I should have said: is if we and the political world forget that "race" is not just about skin-color.....too many negatives....bad writing! |

Yukio: I think you mean "poor" writing, not "bad" writing. (Just joking! I admire how you express yourself!) |

Ladies, I agree O'Connor is not a reactionary ideologue like her fellow Supreme Court Justices Scalia & Thomas. And O'Connor has a few times broken camp with hard-liners on certain issues involving discrimination of women & minorities and abortion. However, any reasonable assessment of her full voting record as both a judge & as a legislature, of her legal opinions and her political activities would support labeling her as being conservative. And maybe she supports affirmative action primarily because it benefits white women. But I feel about that about how I feel about what were the real reasons for President Lincoln freeing the slaves: "Who cares?" |
