What was the point of featuring so many African Americans in prominent roles in The Matrix Trilogy (MT)?

Is it because the movies' creators consider blacks to the most natural, durable human beings? Is it because are a people who have continued to survive and thrive amid continual, ubiquitous oppression? Is it that we more than any other people around we our struggle for freedom appears more authentic? Are the makers of the MT trying to contrast our soulful "naturalness" with the hard repression of technology run amok? Are they arguing that because of our onerous experiences, we would most prepared to deduce reality from a dream?

Or do they just really dig black folks and like to see us being the good guys (4 a change)?

In addition to the Larry Fishburne's wise, faithful "Morpheus", Marcus Chong's resourceful "Tank" and the departed Gloria Foster's omniscient "Oracle", the MT now includes fine AA actors such as Jada Pinkett-Smith ("It's a 'Different World' from where you came from."), Harry Lennox (of a recent cable TV’s "Adam Clayton Powell"), Harold Perrineau Jr. (henpecked brother from "The Best Man") and Nona Gaye (Brother Marvin's beautiful daughter filling in 4 the dearly departed Aaliyah).

It has even been reported that Will Smith, not Keanu Reeves, was the first choice for Neo, and he turned the role down to star in the fleeting Men In Black (GULP!! I guess he swallowed the wrong "pill".). It's gotta kill Big Willie to see his wife Jada starring in a seminal moment in movie history. I hope he fired his agent.

I am fascinated that white writer/directors Wachowski Bros. (native Chicago comicbook authors) and producer Joel Silver (of "Lethal Weapons" fame) would "risk" making the most expensive trilogy ever (MT cost $400M, $100M more than the sprawling Lord of the Rings trilogy) where most of the goodguys are black. It just seems like it would have been much easier (though infinitely more predictable and less plausible) if they went with the post-pubescent Dawson Creek-Buffy the Vampire Slayer types to populate such cool-a$$-movies.

Man! I can't wait to see Matrix II and III.

I don't think they risked anything. The main character is Keanu Reeves--he is the chosen one--and they is his sidekicks. The black sidekick is a proven money maker--The Lethal Weapon series, the Rush Hour series, etc.

I think they want Black people to go see the movie.

If they only wanted black people to be sidekicks, why would the offer the lead role to Will Smith first? And I can see 1 or 2 black sidekicks, but from what I understand of the movie, black people are all over the place.

And come on, do you really think they had to populate the movie with AA's to get us to see it? Most black folks I know have read so many Biblical/Christian meanings into the movie, that I don't think they would have much trouble selling it to us irrespective of the race of Neo.

Kinda cynical, aren't we Chris?

since Kola is MIA, allow me to observe that the blacks in these featured roles look more "ethnic" than black, and as we all know, the "ethnic" look is in.

Hi Cynique,
Sis E here. Let me be the 'devil's' advocate here about your "ethnic" look is in" comment, and add, "except if you're a dark-skinned African American woman."
Please tell me I'm wrong, but I haven't seen any dark-skinned AA women in leading roles for years, except for Whoopi Goldberg.

Kinda CynicalABM--I guess that makes me brother to Cynique!

As an aside, George Lucas wanted Glynn Turman (the actor who was married to Aretha Franklin and had a role on A Different World) to play Han Solo and the suits shot it down. Think of the Star Wars Trilogy with a black hero--would it have done the same biz? I don't know. I remember one of the first graphic novels was Paul Gulacy's SABLE featuring a black hero--looked like Jimi Hendrix and it sold a lot and most comic fans are, as we know, young white males.

Nowadays, what is referred to as the "ethnic" look is the alternative to the Caucasian look. It is an appearance characterized by "sun-kissed" coloring and dark hair and features that hint at Hispanic, Asian and mixed black heritage, a persona that inspires curiosity as to just what the ethnicity of the individual really is. Moreover, it's a type that's supposed to be considered inoffensive to all races.(?)
As far as "dark-skinned" leading ladies are concerned, I'm inclined to wonder if, because they are discouraged by the standards set by both the black and white media, that dark-skinned girls don't migrate to Hollywood to pursue the acting profession but, instead, go into other fields and are, therefore, not plentiful in the acting pool. It's hard for anybody to make it in show biz, so trying to break in as an actress has to be an unappealing choice for those whose looks don't conform to what's "in." Ironically, black males don't seem to be subjected to this discrimination.

You're right, Cynique. I think the darker-skinned Sisters become brain surgeons, astronauts, lawyers, educators ... and writers. Remember Judy Pace and Cicely Tyson and some other worthy AA actresses? Who's followed in their footsteps? But those ebony hued Brothers are much in demand. Is it that opposites attract ... at least on screen?
I'm also looking at AA women singers, especially in the hip-hop world. Thank goodness for musicians like Missy Elliott. Keep hope alive.

Cynique, in case you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of "ethnic" looking people walking around these days. So it doesn’t bother me to see that reflected on the celluloid.

However, you pose an interesting question: Are dark AA females less inclinded to pursue hollywood careers for fear of color discrimination and preferences? I suppose that might be a factor in what limit the likelihood of a chocoalate-flavored sister getting some love on the big screen. If you never show up to audition, you probably won’t be hired for a role.

Interestingly, the paper-bag test actually appears to work in reverse for male AA actors. How many hi-yella brothers do you see headlining movies? Taye Diggs, Wesley Snipes, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson, Martin Lawrence, Ving Rhames and Morris Chestnut are all dark brothas. While Lawrence Fishburne and Will Smith are about the only fairly light-skinned brothers that are regularly featured in movies.

I don't yet know where to place Vin Diesel in this subject matter.

Jaida is caramel, Gaye is caramel, and Fishburne's wife, the Cuban sister is also Caramel. It is clear that all of them are black people...Vin Diesel is the quintessial "ethnic" as is Jennifer lopez...both play and have played mult-ethnic roles....Are we suggesting that authentic black folk are dark skinned with broad noses, full lips, and kinky hair? I know too many pured blooded Africans that couldn't fit into those categories....we have many shades and shapes to us....without having european blood. (Yet, this could be insignigicant, since all/most African Americans and Caribbeans have the blood of the african/native american/european)...

Nevertheless, I do believe there is the unoffensive black look/ethnic look...you know the one where you see black brothers and sisters with nappy hair and european features.....they always in car commercials, or beer commercials, and always with white people...lol! These are the multi-cultural black people..lol! In the Matrix...it seems that Zion could be filled with Black folks and people of color in general because we have been less willing to accept this country or any european state(ie the matrix) at face value. Hence, it would make sense for more of us to be unplugged...there were Indians, Hispanics, and Asians there too...all of these people were colonized(the movie did characterize Zion as primitive)..interestingly, a white man is the leading role for the movie, but he is not the leader of the group, Fishburne's character was....and Neo represents power(whites usually have had more physical power than we've had) and Yet Morpheous has the spiritual and moral power...ie King, Malcolm, etc....

Is this who ethnic-look issue really relevant in the Matrix Trinity? Many, perhaps most, blacks have some non-African ancestry that will be reflected in their appearance. So why would it be controversal for this reality to be presented in the Matrix? And as I said before, the role of Neo was originally offered to Jada's husband Will Smith who apparently turned it down because of a scheduling conflict. So, I don't know if the white/black, physical vs spiritual power contrast is applicable to the intentions of the writers/directors Wachowski brothers.

Though, had Will taken the role of Neo, I wonder would Carrie-Ann Moss have been selected to play his lover Trinity? Hmmmm???

ABM,

I don't know what the Directors meant, but it is still an interesting reading...especially because of the racial make-up of Zion. The directors and screenwriters, i ASSume(cuz i know ya thinking it..lol), did not know that the movie would have done so well, and again, I assume that they didn't know that they would necessarily create a trilogy. If these presumptions have any validity, it is possible to argue that through the process of making and thinking about the movies, as a trilogy etc..., that these elements that i've suggested could have been part of the movie. Also, this type of movie, as is the case with all art, promits us to interpretation, so that it can have greater relevance for us than what the directors ever considered, ever thought about.....

Good Day!

P.S.

I always like your responses...well thought out....nice!

Good Point, Yukio. The storylines and casting of the Trilogy could have evolved and changed as things went along. Though, I am hard-pressed to think the Wachowski's, who appear to be advocates of sort of a neo-egalitarian perspective, would have materially altered what they had originally intended to do simply based on whether Neo was black or white.

And thanks for the props, Yukio. You are both clear and sincere about what you assert. I am at least as impressed with your commentary as you appear to be with mine.

Hello All,

I just came back from watching the Matrix Reloaded movie. I liked it a lot better than the first one. But, I did notice a hidden racism in the picture. Did you notice the home of Morpheus and the crew, Zion, had a lot of black folks. When Morpheus gave the speech and it was all that dancing and stuff, that was done by a lot of black extras. I liked that. But then later on in the movie, when Neo, Morpheous, and Trinity go to the high class restaurant to get the Key Maker, did you notice that all the patrons in the restaurant were white? *eyebrow raised* It wouldn't have been so obvious if I hadn't just a second ago watched all the black folks dancing.

Hello All,

But, I think there's more of a message in the restaurant scene than just the obvious. Now, that I think on it, could the film makers be making the point that in a fight for freedom, there are a number of white folks that were indifferent to the fight, like many are today. Lookit, there is a real chance of mankind being wiped out and white folks is there fine dining? That's true today. The filmmakers may be more in tune than a whole lot of folks in Hollywood.

In all honesty, I saw more folks with braids and locks in the Matrix movie than I have in a number of black movies in recent years. I never would have thought that I would see Cornell West in a movie!

I did not like Reloaded as much as I did the first installment. I didn't dislike it. But I was slightly disappointed. I found Reloaded a bit pedantic and long-winded. And the Zion party scene looked and sounded so much like a rave party, I couldn't help wondering whether Morpheus was there to prepare "Zionites" for war or to supply them a heaping stash of Ecstasy.

I loved seeing Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett-Smith, though. Dem gurls were workin' dat leatha sum'em fierce, weren't dey? (Trinity should have busted a cap off into that Italian hoochie who went slobbin' all up on Neo.)

I noticed the racial contrast also, Thumper. "But riddle me this, 'Batman'": Since the diverse Zion is the home of liberated humans with free will while the whites-only restaurant scene is only a facscimile of reality created to enslave people, couldn't one argue the actually "hidden racism" that is being asserted is that black folks are free and...white people are slaves? ((wink))

I, however, thought your unique contribution to this discussion was not the possible reasons for the Matrix racial distinctions, which several of us had also similarly asserted, but rather that the directors' intentions might have evolved as they formulated and filmed the Matrix Reloaded and the upcoming Matrix Revolution.

Truly, My Dear Yukio, were I to stop to credit you with every wondrous insight that you so generously share with the rest of us "Thumpites", I would hardly have time/resources enow to do/say much else. :-)

It's all harmless flirting on the PC. AMB can't do anything to us through these monitors. He's being obnoxious and cute because I STARTED it and egged him on.

He's a man, girl, cut him some slack. And according to Thumper, he's GRAY-haired...so that explains his mild and unknowing sexist bent (which, by the way, lots of men have bent dicks).

Still, I like him. He's charming and he's sexy. Let's not mis-use and waste the word "Harassing".

ABM was being playful, that's all.

Awwwh, come on ladies. Please don't make up jus' yet. 'Cause I was hoping to see a very juicy catfight...kinda like the 1 where those 2 big-breasted white chicks are mudwrestling in that recent infamous Miller's Light commercial.

BTW: My dome is black & full, not gray. (I think I know why Thumper drew that conclusion, but you will have to ask him to be sure.)

So ya betta watch yerself, Snake (Pit), 'cause this "python" can still putta hard squeeze 2 ya.

Kola,
Awwwwh nawww, Baby. Why reveal who you are now? I was having so much fun concocting clever and lewd reptilian monikers, references and double entendres. Now that you have outted yourself, I've got to figure out how I can comfortably continue to tease & harass our female Nelson Mandela. Hmmmmm?? Oh well, I'm sure I'll think of something. :-)

Suggestion: A bootylicious babe like you should reveal herself slowly, surely...sinuously...with the sensuous confidence of a star burlesque stripper, who skillfully wields a feather-boa to whip helpless men into a rabid frenzy, not like a $5 crackhead ho' who instantly drops her "drawers" so as 2 quickly satisfy her John then hurriedly scurry off 2 score sum cheap blow.

Cynique,
See. There you go, Cynique, tellin' all our biznaz. You're jus' jealous 'cause you wanna get sum licks in too. Well remember, "Sineek", a sistahs gotta give a lil' sum sum tah get lil' sum sum.

Yukio,

Don't worry, ABM. No will care if you harass and tease me. They all knew anyway--including you, daddy. I'm no good at deception.

Of course, you know it's all in fun. I've had many men, but Thomas is the only one that I ever loved and wanted.

He's also the only man I've ever had who didn't pick me--I picked him. I worship my husband. HE...is the one with girlfriends. But of course, I picked them all, so it's alright. You wouldn't understand the cultures we're from.

In America, I'm learning more and more to hide my real face and my real feelings. This is a place that detests honesty. Everyone wants a fantasy--movie script ideals and unrealities. Only here can kittens pass for roosters and no one says anything. The Americans are so rich, fat and spoiled rotten that they can't think in a natural way.

Anyway. Don't stop messing up my hair now. I was enjoying the match. You're playful and adventurous like I am. I'm fantasizing that you're like an Ashanti man--of course, we East African women fantasize about you West African Ashanti and Mandinka men. The greatest warriors the world has ever known. I always wanted to be chased naked down through the GahrBaala by one.

Ssssss

ABM...I am jealous, though, of your constant flirting with Yukio. But I guess her modern computer brain is more alluring than my bare one.

Isn't that funny? Bare-brained.

Well to quote one of my own poems:

"and the birds are the birthmark world."

The book of the Sun never runs out of day or night, daddy.

I am so grateful to have you as my chum. You took up for me so many times. Thank you so much for saying something kind. All kidding aside, my life is an absolute hellish nightmare right now. You can't know how it is to have your work banned from bookstores--to be firebombed and out of print. Have you read the New York Post stories about my publisher in Morocco being firebombed and me being dropped? I think they're the only newspaper in America to report it (Oh, and the N.Y. Observer)...but all over the world, it made headlines, as it should have. Imagine a writer's work being forced out of print...and no one caring.

To have your own birth nation threatening your very life. To live on lockdown and have nothing but PC people for company--and not very good company. Things are so contentious here.

So I thank you so much. You seem to realize that insane, sensitive, peculiar people (like myself)...are the special ones who bring about color and change.

It feels so awful lonely, ABM, to be so universally hated as I am.

Thanks for being my friend.

Kola

By the way, ABM. I adore and respect Troy Johnson. When men like Stanley Crouch and others were saying that I shouldn't be heard from...only Troy and Professor Derrick Bell (and later Joe Madison) took up for me.

If it weren't for Troy, my books would not have had a place in America to be launched from. His sales and promotion of me is what got me into bookstores, Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble. He made my book a cult hit. Of course, I think we're from two different moons...but he never listened when so many adversaries said that I shouldn't be "heard from".

I'll always be forever grateful...and I will see him this weekend at BEA...although he won't see me.

Kola the Snake: Don't worry, ABM. No will care if you harass and tease me. They all knew anyway--including you, daddy. I'm no good at deception.
ABM the Mongoose: Good, because unlike most perverts, I only really get off on teasing and sexually harassing women who are not bother by my shenanigans. I had inkling that it was you from at the beginning. And that really didn't bug me too much. But I wondered how can you be the standard bearer for new pan-African thought and beliefs if you would allow the flimsy words of a few (possibly jealous) naysayers get in your craw. But the manly side of me digs a little mystery in women. And the "snake" thing is so rife with sensuality and innuendo, I can hardly help myself. So I figured, "Hey, what the hell. If she's going to do the reptilian incognito bit I may as well have fun with it."

Kola the Snake: Of course, you know it's all in fun. I've had many men, but Thomas is the only one that I ever loved and wanted.
ABM the Mongoose: You mean you'd take Thomas even above your former lover, the rich, powerful & infamous Osama bin Laden. Dang! Ol' boy Thomas must be droppin' some SERIOUS science over there.

Kola the Snake: He's also the only man I've ever had who didn't pick me--I picked him. I worship my husband. HE...is the one with girlfriends. But of course, I picked them all, so it's alright.
You wouldn't understand the cultures we're from.
ABM the Mongoose: Hey, it's not for me to judge who/what you do so long as you expect others to be taken aback by it. But tell me Kola. How does that work, anyway, your scoring chicks for your spouse? (And do you have any books/classes coming out soon on the subject?) Where do you get your husband's other women from? Do you cruise along side Sunset Strip streetwalkers and scoop up some tasty pay-4-P.... honies for the hubby to sample? Do you help him to pick them up in bars? Healthclubs? The Yellow Pages? Want Ads? Personals?: "MBF seeking other F's to BANG MY HUSBAND. Must be easy, open-minded & willing to share."

Kola the Snake: In America, I'm learning more and more to hide my real face and my real feelings. This is a place that detests honesty. Everyone wants a fantasy--movie script ideals and unrealities. Only here can kittens pass for roosters and no one says anything. The Americans are so rich, fat and spoiled rotten that they can't think in a natural way.
ABM the Mongoose: Yeah...well..."I know you are but what am I?" Hey, if you fry those kittens, will they taste like chicken?

Kola the Snake: Anyway. Don't stop messing up my hair now. I was enjoying the match. You're playful and adventurous like I am. I'm fantasizing that you're like an Ashanti man--of course, we East African women fantasize about you West African Ashanti and Mandinka men. The greatest warriors the world has ever known. ABM the Mongoose: Well, now I don't like to brag, but butta brothah can show' nuff...Ok...Ok...As a married man, I really should steer clear of this subject matter. :-)

Kola the Snake: ABM...I am jealous, though, of your constant flirting with Yukio. But I guess her modern computer brain is more alluring than my bare one.

ABM the Mongoose: Awwwww Baby, don't mind me and Yukio. She and I are just working thru a bout of mental masturbation. She (like Cynique) remind me of a female version myself, maybe sometime a little too clever/educated/literate for our own good. But you my Nubian goddess, with your sweet, succulent, chocolatey...BRAIN...hehehe...is hardly more than I can stand.

Well to quote one of my own poems:

"and the birds are the birthmark world."

The book of the Sun never runs out of day or night, daddy.

Kola the Snake: I am so grateful to have you as my chum. You took up for me so many times. Thank you so much for saying something kind. ABM the Mongoose: You know the dreams of sweet days and calms places are not promised to those who defy the stubborn and mighty. Still, you were borne to do what you do, it was bursting inside of you. Could you have been anything but what you are? No need to thank me, Kola. I consider it an honor that you would appreciate anything I say. To know that I may in a small way bring a little solace, a little levity to your otherwise tumultuous life is enuff for me to enjoy. :-)

PS: Sorry I erred in my opinion of your feelings about Troy. I thought I had recall your had previously expressed some unflattering views about him. I notice you DID NOT correct me about Thumper. ((wink))

You're hilarious ABM.

I just learned I'm pregnant the other day, so it ruins all our fun. I already have two boys, 5 and 3, so pray for me a daughter.

As for Thomas's girlfriends. I was partly joking...as it's more complicated than it sounds. Be assured that Thomas loves only me. He has signed ownership of his house over to me (until our sons are adult) and he pays all my bills. I have not worked a 9 to 5 job...EVER...in my life. Thomas protects and nurtures me--he's a sexist and he's mostly apolitical, but still, no one has ever treated me better than he has and I trust him with my very life. He is like an African man (being a pure Garifuna from Belize)...but then he allows me my freedom, which an African man would not.

The co-wives that I've commissioned at various times...are usually beautiful African girls from UCLA or USC who need free housing and "help". They are wonderful, intelligent young women who understand the intricate problems experienced by Sahara women like myself whose vaginas are infibulated due to Muslim/Etro scarrification ritual (Sudan is one of the leading nations on earth that practices this misogynist evil)...for right now, even in my thirties and after birthing two sons, I am like a 12 year old child "down there" and Thomas is a very impressive man, you understand. So this "break" is necessary for the lead wife during certain periods. But my point was that my computer flirting is only harmless fun...as I am now growing too old to be the vixen temptress I once was a decade ago. And do note that I sorely miss being the temptress!

Speaking of Somi (Osama Bin Laden)...I never "wanted" to be with him. He forced me to have sex and after that--he moved me from my hotel in Marrakech to a suite at Prince Ruspoli's estate, the La Maison Arabe--which back then, wasn't a hotel yet but was a abandoned mansion, bed and breakfast type setup. It is the most beautiful and lavish place that I have ever lived in my life...but it was pure unadulterated hell. I am too intelligent and too powerful as a human being to be a simple "concubine"...but for 6 months, that is what Osama made me into.

There is only one secret road (a hidden path) into the Medina (the ancient city of walls) wherein lies the La Maison Arabe, so there was no way for me to escape by foot. Osama's guards lived there, too. Not only that, but I had no money and was not connected to anyone of power in Morocco. I was a black woman--and Osama was a White man (in North Africa, the Arabs are WHITE...which is why you hear me refer to American Whites as "Caucasoid Whites"...there are different types of white people, you see).

It was actually Osama's closest friend, Isam Turabi, that was in love with me. But Osama was so jealous and disapproving (because of their religion and because I was black)...that he decided to "dirty" me in Isam's eyes. Of course, when I first met Osama, I didn't know that he knew Isam. I had been the mistress to Isam's father...al Hasan Turabi, the then Vice President of Sudan. V.P. Turabi was instrumental in helping me get parts in movies...but he was old and could not touch me because of his religion...so I his son Isam (who is dark) was assigned to "bodyguard" me on trips to Moamar Khadafi's house in the city of the White Brides--it's a long story, but the Arab Presidents have parties and they hire "actresses" to be wall decoration at the parties--usually blond European women and sickly Korean whores. As a rare Black African woman (rare, because I could speak Arabic and English but ACT the sexy Black American)..I became a highly paid "actress" at parties for Egypt's Mubarak and Khadafi and of course, in Sudan. And from there, Isam (as my bodyguard) was in love with me.

I was never a prostitute, but I did meet powerful men like the Vice President Hasan Turabi at these parties...and I became the mistress of the ones who I thought could help my career or protect me from other powerful men. I don't see anything wrong with that. After all...it's a man's world. And in North African Muslim cultures...females are not even human beings, so I manipulated the men...just as I should have.

Isam is a world class horse breeder and Osama loves nothing on earth more than two things--horses and watermelon. So Osama snatched me out of flight and disgraced me, without mercy, so that he could prove to Isam what trash I was.

TODAY...I am totally shocked that Somi has become someone world "famous". I did not expect that. He is a cruel, Shizoid type of man. He has four wives and 25 children (including two black ones that he treats horribly). Some of the most beautiful poetry that I have ever read was written by Osama.

Here's a link, ABM, to something you might want to read later:

http://breaking.tcm.ie/2003/01/07/story83361.html

It is not what you think it was. I never wanted to be with Osama Bin Laden. He was a monster!

But anyway...now I am pregnant again, which is not a good time, but my spirit is telling me that I MUST have this baby. I was on Halcyon for the last 5 months--I had been diagnosed with chronic clinical depression. My behavior had become so erratic and "off the handle"...but now I must throw away the medications for the sake of the baby and just become a bitch. I have no choice.

I will meditate and pray...and have you as my secret friend that I can talk to.

As for Cynique and Yukio...I admire them greatly and I really like them, too. My only frustration with Yukio is that she's far too brilliant to not seek out a platform...she should be teaching thousands of people her philosophy. Not because she's right..but because she has one, you understand. We women need women like her to help us...heal. I don't understand this about Yukio. What is she doing with all this knowledge?

And Cynique is just GRAND in my eyes. She reminds me of the Sudanese "Dussa" (the Priestess who protects the spirits of the chickens--you wouldn't understand). But I adore Cynique.

People in my world, ABM, always tell me....you should be "mysterious" Kola, you should be PLAYING THE STAR...but that's not who I am. I am a natural person...very open and fellowship-loving. The Black Americans raised me, so I feel lonely when I am not in their presence...even though, I am really not like them, because I was fully formed by the time I got here at 8--children are truly formed into their personas by 6 I tell you. But I belong to the Black Americans, because my blood family is dead and this is where they sent me to live--because my dead mother trusted the Black American "country" people. This is my place, no matter what anyone says.

As for Troy...I just did an interview with PlayBoy magazine...but they got mad, because I will not pose for "topless" photographs. So they are now going to run the article in the Japanese edition of PLAYBOY in July and in the Argentina and Australian editions for August. But I talked at length in that article about Troy Johnson and his support of me...because there has been, and continues to be, enormous resistence to my presence in this industry--and a great deal of it is from Black American movers and shakers. Many of them powerful people..who I will be talking about in my memoirs book.

And then the WHites...they don't want a black woman who LOOKS black to represent Nile River culture. This is a major truth, ABM. My image and my experiences go against EVERYTHING that they have taught their slave stock for hundreds of years. They are bothered by not just my presence...but by my command of Nilotic and Egyptian history. It is an act of God that my father was an archeologist who broke Muslim law and raised me with the knowledge of a boy--because he had no sons--only NAIMA (me).

This industry is against me, mightily, ABM. My book deals are set in Europe...but not here in my home..America. I am still so unwanted and FEARED.

And it's no secret that I don't get along with these two faced White American bitches...I can't fake it with them, because they're against my black babies. They're jealous of me and my personal power and my history as a world citizen, you see.

Well, anyway. I am going to lay down now. I got a headache thinking of all my adversaries. But I will prevail. I am Naima (the One who is Victorious)...the Alu (the Goddess of Trees)...the Bint Harith (daughter of Harith)...the Naima Bint Harith of Omdurman.

I know that I am too good not to have what I want.

So we will chat later, my PC boyfriend. LOL
Ssssssss

Has anyone noticed something?

Glamorous foreign writer with a shady, epic past, cheated on by husband, falls helplessly in love-- over the internet--with handsome, rougeish Playboy type brotha--A BLACK MAN!(Isaac Hayes cue the music for ABM)--but their love cannot be consumated before God because he's obligated to the wheel chair bound wife of his youth.

Boy, what a great novel. Anybody taking notes on Kola Snake and ABM? This is getting better than Young and the Restless.

Kola, I give it to you. You're a show woman in the total Hollywood sense. I have never read a person with so much drama and no personal business. You are like a fictional character yourself, tits. ERR..I mean "toots".

Were you intimating that I have something on this board for sale?

Since you and Rita are so tired of the name calling...but keep bringing it up at every opportunity...why would you say ANYTHING that might be misconstrued or pertain to me?

Trying to start a fight, are we?

ABM and myself have been having our own little conversation...and since I'm a living woman quite done with catwishing...and since I'm not pretentious...it's the kind of conversation

Tisk, tisk, tisk!

That's quite a hackneyed start on a screenplay, don't you think "anonymous"? I'd expect better from most of the crowd that frequent deese' parts. That's the kind of trite that is tossed outta most reputable film schools during the first week of class. Although, I dig the "...handsome, rougeish Playboy..." bit attributed to yours truly.

And wow! Look everybody. "anonymous" deduced what ABM stands for. ((hand clapping)) Hey genius, did you figure that one out all by your lonesome or did you have to consult the Library of Congress?

But given the dreck that passes for entertainment that come outta LALA land these days, I'd better cover all my bases. So let me warn you: If the "Young Kola and the Restless ABM" takes off, you'd betta make sure I get a part of the residuals (minimum cut -> 40%) on the screenplay. Or my attorney will callously hunt you down and flog you like a mangy, flea-ridden dog.

BTW: There are few things sillier than a person who is so afraid to be identified that they would use "anonymous" as a moniker on the Internet. For Christ Sake, can't you scary folks at least be...somethin'?

Rita: No, thanks. Just communicating with you is trouble enough. I don't have time to deal with the queen. I have posted to this board 2 or 3 times and each time I have been accused of attacking Several Snakes/Kola. My life is great I just wanted to have a little discussion and fun. In the future I will try to refrain from responding to your post and the snakes. Sounds like you are also a very impressive man. Maybe more impressive since its coming through your PC(LOL).

Kola said: I am like a 12 year old child "down there" and Thomas is a very impressive man, you understand.

Rita: Toooo much information (TMF). Yes, I'm laughing my ass off. So, I know I want have enought left to purchase your Thunder. But, I(lighten) have never been afraid of thunder.

Kola said: You got a problem with that? Because I don't think you've got enough ass to purchase my thunder or even stand under it...FOR FREE.

Rita: Sound more like free ass. I'll pass.

Sorry, Thumper, Troy and anyone else that I may have accidentally offended. This was not my call I just answer the the phone. This is my first and last negative post. Peace

Boy, this is really entertaining. I had no idea that being on the sidelines was this much fun. Snake Girl, you are like a lightning rod; you attract static.
Seriously, when I read the exchanges between various posters it becomes obvious to me that people are quick to misinterpet what is written. You've all heard of "road rage"? Well, this site has spawned a type of reaction which inspires me to coin a new phrase: "board rage."

Viewing your post was like seeing the vails of time unfold before my eyes.

Ladies, Ladies...LADIES. No need 2 fuss & fight! (Ok, well you can tussle a little bit...so long as I get to watch.) There's enuff of me to go up, down, & ALLLLL AROUND.

Excuse me, Rita. What's your beef with me anyway? What bug have I put up your skirt, sister? Ooooh Ho! I get it. Are YOU the aforementioned "anonymous"? If so, all I can say is, "If you spit in a wind tunnel, sistah, expect to get a little goo slapped back into your face."(-ABM)

Think I'm an "impressive man" on a PC? Heck! That's nothing. Wait 'til yah see/hear me dance/sing.

Seriously, I agree Kola's specific telling of her "personal" travails may have crossed most of our need-2-know thresholds (And besides, that bit of info sends my "preverted" mind into directions that only my shrink and my dominatrix should hear about.). Although, her comments about the horrors of female circumcisions are profoundly real and painful. It behooves us all to learn about and do our part to abolish these abominable practices. And if what has happened to Kola and millions other hapless little African girls was occurring here in the US, you, who would then be a probable victim of such inhumane treatment, would likely not be as flippant about this.

Rita (& others who's bourgeious sensibilities I may have offended) don't mind me. (Though, it never ceases to amaze me how insulted people can get on the Web.) I'm just an average brothah (with a rabid smarta$$ gene) grabbing a few moments of fun in between more important things to do during the day. So lighten up, Baby Gurl. Because unlike most of us, Your "...life is great...". Remember?

1 mo' thang: The "Sound more like free ass. I'll pass." retort was funny, Rita. HAHAHA!!! I gotta give you that one. Howahbout: "...free ass.""...I'll pass..."......some gas? :-O

I'm waiting on SOMEONE to have the decency to congratulate me on my pregnancy.

Or is that (too much information) for grown ass intellectual adults to be privvy to as well?

ABM--thanks for being sensitive enough to understand the lifetime of suffering and the Seriousness of an issue like female genital mutilation. It affects 100 million Black women on the planet...and it certainly does change the way in which marriage decorum is carried out.

Because of this ritual...there have been times when my menstral period made me bedridden for weeks at a time....or other times when after lovemaking, I literally could not walk for two days.

How am I to take care of my children, clean my home and cook 3 meals a day if I am in this condition?

These are the realities of women from other countries...who actually depend on co-wives due to the more misogynist and barbaric practices of our ancient cultures. This is a very serious subject...one worthy of acknowledgement--and I certainly am not PROVINCIAL ENOUGH (or pretentious enough) to hold my tongue about it.

Amazing how disinterested the so called "intellectual folk" can be in having knowledge about any other life experience...other than their own.

Why would grown ass people...not talk about real life? without pretentions. Honestly, I because my conversation with you comes from the heart...I had not even noticed the nuances of the language. Truth is truth.

We all have organs "down there" don't we?

As for Rita--there's a name for women like her, but I wouldn't use it outside of a kennel.

Graduate of the Kookla, Fran and Ollie Social Club...she can KISS MY FREE ASS as I wipe her off the windshield of my car--bird dip--which is about as free as free gets.

It's obvious she's got no integrity by the way she just can't resist dipping into the conversations that neither you nor I directed at her. And to defend Susan no less.

These women know NOTHING about sisterhood.

I wish they would go dig a grave and get their mothers off the couch and leave me alone.

As I said before...I'm a LIVING woman...not a strong one.

Signed--The Queen Alone

ABM,

Sorry, I'm not your anonymous. I have no beef with you. When I said communicating with you is trouble enough. I didn't mean that you were causing the trouble. I think you are funny and sweet. I just don't have time for the drama (from the snake) after responding to one of your post. Maybe I'm missing something but I can't figure out in three little post why snake girl added my name in her post to Susan. Don't get me wrong I'm not a Kola hatter. I just wanted to let her know it doesn't take much to be mean and nasty, the hard work is being nice. And I just didn't feel like putting in any overtime today. She called me and I answered. Anybody can have a bad day. When they all start being bad check yourself (you may be part of the problem). That goes for me too. So, if you see a post were I'm being mean or nasty (not the previous post)call me out. I bet I'll answer you with a sincere apology.

And yes, Kola has many valid points, but sometimes you miss them or forget them because of the other stuff. And maybe I was wrong for my previous post but if I was: If loving you is wrong I don't want to be right. Peace

Cynique,

Your new phrase is cute. I will try to refrain from board rage in the future.

Oh, I'm sorry Kola. I guess I got too caught up in being the cyber gadfly that I forgot my upbringing.

Congratulations on your imminent blessing. I pray that you have a comfortable, as possible, pregnancy and delivery.

Regarding your wanting a daughter: I understand your wanting to balance the gender content in the household. But being a father of 2 girlies, who are both the great bane and joy of my life, I suggest that you be careful of what you wishful. Because, if you have a girl, your being the sole diva goddess queen of your household will come to an abrupt (& painful) ending. Trust me. HAHAHA!!!

Seriously, I wish you, the baby and the rest of your family great joy, good health and happiness. :-)

Snake Girl,

Congrats on your pregnancy. I hope you have an easy pregnancy. Also, I hope you get the girl you are hoping for. Sorry, I forgot to be considerate of your feelings earlier. I dare me to be so selfish. I sincerely apologize.

Like I said before you never know when someone else is having a bad day or going through something be very careful what you wish for.
My mother is very ill at the moment. I could be very ugly at the moment but I will refrain. Remember you are carry life this is a blessing. Peace

Yukio & Cynique,

Cheer up, ladies. Every birth bears the greatest possible blessing. For each child, in spite of her or his origin, may light the way to all of our salvation.

Remember: Jesus was born in a manger...not a mansion.

Rita,

I guess I thought you were criticizing me and that your comments appeared related to my previous responses to "anonymous". Pardon my paranoia. I'm glad I was wrong and that there's no beef between us (Unless of course you want there to be 1. hehehe.). I like to stir things up, to try to entertain, elucidate and incite the mind/emotions a bit, but not to unnecessarily piss folks off.

I'll let you and Kola work out your things. But sufficed to say, I think Kola's belligerence is borne from feeling understandably betrayed, isolated and alone. I guess some say she deserves it. I don't know enuff about her to agree with or to deny that. But I know history is usually unkind to those who would dare try to enlighten and liberate the rest of us: Abraham Lincoln, John Brown, Nat Turner, Paul Robeson, Ghandi, Jackie Robinson, JFK, MLK, Malcolm X, RLK, Medgar Evers, Steven Biko, Tupac and countless other freedom fighters, both famed/unknown, have paid enormous prices for trying to free us.

I don't know if Kola is some luminescent figure or not who is her to lead us on to tomorrow. I don't think that even matters. But I know that, even in spite of her bravado and fiery bluster, there is something undeniable about or within what she says, much of which I even rationally disagree, that seems to surpass even the veracity of her words. Most of us who see/hear what she say knows there is a primordial calling there that irresistibly beckon us, even when we try to avoid listening.

RITA...I owe you such an apology.

I feel so horrible for saying mean things to you.

You have no idea how hard it is to be understood by people when your point of reference are so different...but I really feel terrible when fight with other women.

I am a woman who really loves other women (not sexually)...but in a sisterly, spiritual sense. So I feel so guilty for having been catty with you.

I am truly, truly sorry and I apologize from the bottom of my heart.

I don't like to fight. I really don't.

Hi Rita,

I can think of other far worse names that you could have been linked to than myself. ROFL But seriously, when I said was tired, a couple of weeks ago, I meant it. Even moreseo now after folks are posting on the board under several monikers and then when called out about it, they start denying it and attacking people again, and then 2 days later come back and say, oh, by the way this was me. How childish is that? But for those who like playing those silly games, play on!

One last thing...

as for being "betrayed" ABM..I hope you didn't mean by my husband Thomas.

I hope people will understand that I think of Thomas as my HERO...he's a wonderful, wonderful man. He spoils me rotten and treats me so nice.

It is ME..KOLA...who feels guilty about my "limitations" and insists that at certain times in our lives...we contract a Co-wife. Among African people this is very normal, respectable social behavior. 100 million women are infibulated. Many of us need Co-wives to make our lives less stressful. Black men expect plenty of sex in a marriage--our society makes them feel entitled to it. I feel much more comfortable knowing that he's in the guest room with a lovely young woman who was chosen by me and who is limited in her interaction with him. She realizes that she is only there to co-wife.

Some African women use the co-wife to cook and clean, look after the newborns. NOT ME. I use her to comfort my husband, and only sparingly, because Thomas has never been completely comfortable with it--he is a Christian (in the White sense of Christianity). But I love to cook and I love my babies, so I just occasionally need to be spared from the sex act...because it can be murder during pregnancy months.

Other than that, we have a great sex life...and of course, these horrible "infibulations"...are very pleasing to the men physically. This is why it's done...no matter the Africans tell you. They are LYING. It's not for spiritual cleansing of females....it's for men's sexual gratification. They like us to be weak beyond walking. OSAMA BIN LADEN will not be with a woman unless she is "properly cut".

So my dear Black American women...it's not only the White man who has violated your body for centuries.

atu sa (i love you)

Susan--

It's the childish people who change the world.

It's the childish people who have fun.

It's the childish people who win Nobel Prizes in literature--just ask the childish Toni Morrison.

It's the childish people who learn how to grow without dying.

You..my sister..should get some "integrity" and skip my posts, ignore my presence--stop making your sarcastic comments.

Get on with your own exciting posts/conversations.

Kola, that was a sweet apology that you wrote to Rita. Very touching.

I'm an aspiring writer and I must tell you that it take everything in me not to steal some of your lines! You are such a skilled manipulator with words and catchy phrases. Trust me when I say that Joan Crawford and Bette Davis ain't got nothing on you, lady.

I've been enjoying your posts for months, but the recent sweetness and vulnerability you display so openly is what really makes me like you.

Congrats on your baby and blessings to your wonderful marriage. I do understand what you are trying to explain and I can appreciate your concern for your husband.

Good luck to you.
