Why do many islanders and other Latinos and Latinas, have such a big problem with admitting their afro-heritage? I found this to be a big issue in the latin community? Can any one speak on this? Is anyone knowledgeable on the subject? Opinions? Debate? Lets Go! |

Why did (or do--I have no way of knowing that the practice has stopped) so many American born blacks try to pass for white? It don't take a rocket scientist to figure out being black ain't high on the wish list in America.
A white researcher asked a roomful of whites if Black people weren't given unfair advantages. Many hands shot up. He then asked them how many wished they were black. All the hands went down.
On another list another poster challenged me to prove that I was black. I retorted who, in America, would claim to be that who was not?
He didn't have anything to say to that.
I have been and remain proud of my African heritage. But I ain't had a lot of choice. I would hope that if I had had the parents I did and looked like Mel Gibson I would claim the black side--but I ain't never been faced with the choice. |

Well, if these people are true Hispanics they are not black. They are the off-spring of the white Spanish Conquistadors and the Indian natives they impregnated. They may be people of color but they are not descendants of Africa. Spaniards are Caucasian and North American Indians have been classified as a sub-division of the Asian stock. Yes, there are those like the Domincans and Puerto Ricans who choose to identify themselves as something other than black, but that's probably because their native tongue is Spanish. |

But there is a large afro heritage in Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, even, I was surprised in Peruvians, Mexicans and Columbians. A lot of very dark skinned Latinos do shy away from it too |

I never heard of an African Mexican, Chris but - if you say so. A lot of these Hispanic people who look Negroid are a mix of African and Spanish and they probably distinguish themselves from African Americans because their heritage and history is different. I know there is a substantial population of African descendants in Brazil but they rarely immigrate to America. |

I just had a delicious thought--
Do we have our version of the East Coast West Coast Thang going here? You think we can milk it for the publicity ie, start putting out diss records on each other and ranking on each other in interviews to the media? |
