Hey all,

Someone emailed this poem to me it is supposed to be written by Ms Angelou, but please don't hold me accountable if it isn't. It's still food for thought either way.
My apologies to Ms.Angelou if this isn't her work.

Clothes

You are in love with Tommy,
Because his last name is Hilfiger,
But behind closed doors, Tommy,
Is calling you a nigger,

But you could care less,
Because you have been taught to dress to impress,
If I ask you about your true history,
You would have to look on the back of your jeans and Guess,

You come up in the club wearing Versace,
Clothes made by a homosexual male,
So even when you say you are straight,
It is very hard to tell,
And for footwear, you wear Timberlands,

Even under the sun,
That same tree that's the symbol for them,
Could have been the same one your ancestors were hung from,

I cannot forget Nautica,
When was the last memory you have of ships,
Coming to North America in shackles,
Being beaten over the back with whips,

And to my beautiful black queens,
Whose creative womb has become barren,
I am confused because your face says Nefertiti,
But your sweater reads Donna Karen,

When was the last time you saw Liz Claiborne,
Conversing with black women,
But as soon as her name is printed on a purse,
To Macy's you quickly go, running,

Ralph Lauren doesn't even look at black men,
Unless they are driving him around town,
But as soon as that slave master appears on the back of a horse,
You put whatever you have picked up down,

My people reclaim your status in this world and in your life,
F.U.B.U. in case you didn't know, stands for (For Us By Us),
Buying black will someday suffice,
Do you know who owns Timberland fashion?

Well, Timberland is owned by the president of the KKK,
Surprised? Don't be.
Read more books black people,
Always hope for the best and prepare for the worst,
You may not get what you pay for,
But you'll surely pay for what you get.

~ Maya Angelou

I would be very surprised if this poem was really by Maya Angelou. Doesn't sound like her present voice at all--but who knows? Artists have different moods.

I've seen this poem before but I can't remember what the circumstances because it was a while back. Anyway, it not only tweaks the noses of all of the bling-bling hip-hoppers who claim to be "keeping it real" but also all of those materialistic buppies with their false values. For that, I can appreciate it.

Ahh, it's great to know I still got it. I bet I would tear up one of those blind ear tests like Downbeat used to give--you know, name that poet?

I'm really SURPRISED that some tripe like THAT could have ever been credited to Maya Angelou.

You can call it tripe all you like, abm. It's STILL food for thought! And I hope young people read it and think twice about putting Hilfiger on their bodies--this aint the first time I heard that he said that he didn't design his clothing for us. And like cynique said, some of these professional people who think wearing designer lables makes them all that should think twice too. Cuz thier mostly white designers are probably having a laugh or two on them all the way to the bank, and every time they pull out a fat wad of cash that we have bankrolled!

Tommy Hilfiger did recently select Beyonce as the inspiration and spokeswoman for his new perfume called "True Star."

of course he would do something like that now, he made those negative statements about blacks when he first came out. no, he's not going to do ANYTHING now to stop the flow of black hip hop and rap artists dollars into his accounts. No doubt he's putting up a good public front and is probably STILL laughing behind your back.

Beyonce is probably laughing all the way to the bank, herself.

Cynique,

Indeed!

A_womon,

If young Blacks are dumb enough to let Beyonce exploit them into inflating her and the racist Hilfiger's bank accounts, yawl deserve whatcha get.
