Hello, My name is Anthony E. Prior I have written a book called Faith On 40 Yards. I am eleven-year professional football player. I spent seven years with the NFL, three of those years with the New York Jets, and four years with the CFL. I am one of the few professional athletes willing to discuss the state of football that the general public never sees, one where racism is subtle, but prevalent. I was voted player representative to the Canadian Football League Players Association by my teammates during the 2003 season. I participated in the evaluation of potential recruits for the Calgary Stampeders.
"Faith on Forty Yards says what Lawrence Taylor wanted to say but couldn’t. It says what Barry Sanders should of said but didn’t and what many expected Robert Smith to say but wasn’t voiced. Keyshawn Johnson tried to say it but he wasn’t heard. This book expands on Warren Sapp’s description of the NFL “as a slavery system.” I respect all these men for their contribution to the pro football industry. However, their silence has inspired me." The players that speak up usually get ostracized, labeled as troublemakers or diagnosed as a potential cancer to the team. You known what happens to cancer man! Surgery or chemotherapy! If you buck the system, you’re definitely are a prime candidate for re-education, better known in pro leagues as the trade.
Many black players say it’s a slave system, but give us details, give us emotions, give us something to read to articulate, to share with friends, family and ultimately the world. There has been so much talk about the NFL being modern day slavery, but fast talk and useless words can't paint the picture. This book will take you through my career in which I have experienced hypocrisy either personally or through the eyes of my teammates. These experiences will heighten the consciousness of the thousands of young men in pursuit of an NFL career.
I believe in the near future, black players will unite and establish a strong voice within the NFL. It has been 102 years since Charles W. Follis took the field, making him the first black NFL player with the Shelby Athletic Club in 1902. We are still competing, not leading. If the slave of the 19th century was in the same arena as the 21st century black pro football player, who would be more influential? Please tell me what you think and if you have any advise for me on how to get my book to an agent or anything let me know Thanks

Welcome Anthony. Your book sounds interesting and timely. I know a lot of folks see the black quarterbacks and coaches we have now and think we’ve made it. It’ll be interesting to get a behind the scenes look at what’s really happening. And I like what you say about showing young people that pro sports ain’t all about the bling.

Didn't the late Curt Flood, a black baseball player on the St. Louis Cardinals make these same "slave system" charges against the game of baseball after they attempted to trade him against his will? I think he was the first player to buy out his contract and become a free agent after he took his owners to court. Anyway, I'm trying to muster up some empathy for ya, Anthony, but with the astronomical salaries being paid professional athletes I need some convincing. Here in Chicago, The Bulls have a black player who is being paid over $50,000 a game to loll around on inactive status, passing his hours away, stocking up on platinum jewlery. He is injury-prone and all attempts to trade him have been unsuccesful because of the huge salary clause another team would have to honor. Meanwhile the Bulls' white point guard is getting paid half of what this black player is being paid and this little critter is the best scorer on the team. Also this black guy played a total of 36 minutes last season and still drew a full salary. Not to worry. You will probably be encouraged to know that my views are pretty unpopular on this site because I tend to play the devil's advocate. But since you are speaking about the NFL, you may have a different slant, so state your case, babe. ( And, in keeping with the spirit of your reception here, even though I'm um - a little older than the others, I was just wondering - is your body all buffed and husky and agile and, um, you know, like that?

I was adopted and raised by a Military family, you know. My father is Lt. Marvin Johnson and he worked at the Pentagon for many years.
In fact, when they were interrogating me about Osama Bin Laden (and kept me at that drafty Pentagon for 6 days straight), my father was the only one who could raise enough hell to get me out. Not even the powerful black politicians that I called had any pull.

So sorry. Didn't mean to distress. She didn't call me directly. I got a call from a friend telling me. So, I had to break to make sure. The fire dept. was still there when I got her on her roommates phone. Her cell phone was dead. Then I had to call the insurance co., etc.
I'm going to pick her up tomorrow (she's about an hour away). All is well. And thank you for all the concern. I feel like family (sigh). |

Anthony,
There are several things that bother me about Black pro athletes.
You disproportionally populate the league yet that rarely translate into any significant ownership and/or managerial control.
The majority of NBA/NFL coaches are STILL white, even though Black make up 70 - 85% of the leagues rolls. I can't imagine that the NFL could be 80% Jewish and that NOT be reflected amongst it owners/coaches.
And how is it you NFL'er allow the owners to get away with not guarenteeing your contracts (which do exist in pro basketball, baseball and hockey) when you have the shortest most dangerous careers?
I think at some point the Warren Sapps and Keyshawn Johnsons are going to have to stop complaining and band together either to demand a higher cut of the take or have the guts to try to put together their own league. |

Good Morning, Here is a sample of one of the chapters in my Book that you asked for tell me what you think... I know you tell LOL
As I lie on my back I feel the grass against my neck, I hear my coaches and the other players talking and laughing.
I watch the quieter players, knowing that they’re
wondering what the coaches really think of them. I’m supposed to be stretching, but I’m having a moment of recognition and heightened consciousness. I ask myself, “Why am I out here?
What am I trying to prove to these coaches and players?” The sweat runs down my face, over my ear, and down my neck. I sure would like to be in an air-conditioned building behind a
desk, telling people where to go, what to do, and when to do it.
Instead, I’m here on the football field. It’s the seventh day of
training camp.
During training camp, before the football season starts,
the weather is always hot and the mosquitoes bite like hell. The
pressure to perform can sometimes burn like fire if you let it.
At training camp, coaches and personnel evaluate new talent to
see if the new players have got what it takes to be a soldier on
the battlefield of play. Training camp is like playing war games:
the soldier who can stand the pressure and always have enough
enthusiasm and tenacity to withstand day in and day out and
perform under any circumstances, wins the crown and finds
himself on the team. He gets a numbered jersey that bears his
name but really, that’s all he has in the end, a name on a jersey.
The coaches and scouts double the roster for training
camp. Going into camp, you sell your soul and some of us even
burn bridges for this opportunity. You leave your family behind
and some of us even leave our unwed girlfriends with our kids,
thinking we have made it to the Promised Land. But when camp
is over, half of the players are jobless. I’ve been on that side of
the fence and I’ve seen players let that one bad experience alter
their whole life. For when training camp is over, football is over
for some players forever.
The sad thing about training camp is the relationships that
are broken. At training camp you share a room with a stranger.
You develop a bond with that person. You stay up all night long,
talking about life, love, women, and football. And then it dawns
on you that your roommate is the man you’re competing with.
He stands between you and your childhood dream of becoming
a pro football player. On the field he becomes your enemy even
though off the field he’s your friend. You watch his every move
on the field as you practice and, when he slips up or makes a
mistake, in your mind you celebrate his misfortunes. You chalk
up one for yourself, because the player who makes the fewest
mistakes wins the crown and wears his name on the back of
his jersey. When it comes down to making the team and the
coaches having to choose, we only hope for ourselves that we
make the cut. It’s sad, but it’s so true.
During one training camp, on a hot afternoon in August,
the coach seemed to lose track of time and, after practice was
over, he said to us, “Tomorrow I’m giving you guys the day off,
but remember this, men, your bodies belong to me.” After
hearing that I felt a little uneasy and perplexed as I walked
towards the locker room. I heard the wind in the trees speak to
me. I could hear the cry of my ancestors. I could feel the sway of
the slave ships. I may have been a little dehydrated at the time,
but a spirit had come upon me. I looked at my brothers around
me, sweating like slaves, fighting each other like animals on the
fields, disrespecting each other, all in the name of fame. Listen
and let me take you into my thoughts, and hear the spirit of
slavery that today is modern-day football.
People have written and said that black athletes are the
finest-tuned machines in the world. Many say we were created
by God to do things many of us can’t do. I believe that black
athletes are just entertainers who get dirty outside. I know
we pose no threat to anybody. I feel like a king with no crown.
I’m just a product on the shelf. For every Anthony Prior on
the field, there are another 200 more around the corner. The
positions we hold as football players are short lived. Our bodies
are not our own when it comes to big contracts and fame. That’s
why being a black athlete today I can’t help but think back to
slavery. In my opinion slavery is one of the worst crimes done
to humanity and America still hasn’t given us blacks an apology.
That’s sad. I have no problem writing about what my eyes have
seen and my ears have heard. For one, I’m black, and I’ve been
involved in pro football for ten years. I’ve seen a lot and heard
a lot. Most important, I have the knowledge and experience to
back it all up.
To really get a good understanding of football and slavery,
let’s go back to the slave ships, a time and place in history when
a mindset was created. The mindset of fearing your master
was set by beatings and torture, with hangings for slaves who
didn’t obey and who refused to cooperate. Now they don’t
beat us on the field; instead they just cut us and say, “He was
uncoachable,” or “He had a bad attitude.” History tells us these
stories. I’m just putting them in today’s context. Four hundred
years ago the slave ships told us that our bodies were not our
own, our lives would be forever changed, our families would be
separated, and see what lay before us. This attitude has been a
mindset towards blacks all over the world and has also been a
mindset in football at all levels—high school, college, and the
pros. It’s most relevant in locker rooms, where the mentality of
some black athletes have made me laugh but has also driven me
into a silent rage.

The whites have a lock on it because it is their ballgame, babe. They started it, they run it, they finance it, they decide who gets in and does what.
Am I, or anybody else, gonna start cutting grass around your house or working on the roof or the plumbing and going to start giving you orders?
Furthermore they are here today and gone tommorrow, one injury away from ending their careers. It is the reason why college students cant organize--because, if they do their job, in four years they are no longer college students.

Not only that, isn't football a team sport? Players are getting paid huge salaries to subvert their individuality for the good of the group. It's about winning, not whining. Professional sports ain't no video game. It's a "bidness." |

Thanks for providing a clip from your book. It provides a glimpse of the life of a NFL’er. I’m sure if enough people hear-tale of what you have in store for the reader, your book will soar off bookshelves everywhere.
But I agree with Cynique’s view that it is a bit of stretch to equate being a slave with being a pro football player. Because as terrible as life may be in the NFL, each and every player - even the Black ones - can voluntarily ‘turn in his cleats’ at ANYTIME.
Slaves, however, usually had ‘lifetime contracts’.

Then they are fools and are effectively little different from field slaves who foolishly compete to see which can bail more of Massah’s cotton.
Because in America, the REAL money is not in the salary...its is in equity. Because a paycheck will come then go. But ownership is eternal, "baby" (Check with the 5 - 10 generation rich foks like the Kennedys, Rockefellers and Vanderbilts about that.).
And just because Whites started the games don’t mean that brothahs couldn’t do the same. Because, really, THEY are the product.
There wouldn’t be no $5 Billions TV/cable contracts, $Billion merchandising deals, $100M stadiums and sporting complex with the remarkable athletic talents of BLACK men. All that’s required is for brothahs to en masse DEMAND more.
Now. Will they do that? Will they claim a larger proportion of the fruit of their skill?
I doubt it.
And doubt it probably for the same reason you do and for the same reasons that we have discussed here and elsewhere ad infinitum: Black foks just don’t want to work together!
So (no disrespect intended to your efforts Anthony), although I imagine Anthony’s book could become a best seller, I, alas, don’t expect that it will inspire the changes that he, you and I might desire.
PS: And the reason you cite for prohibiting college athletes from organizing is neither legitimate nor fair. Why should how long/brief one remains employed by another bear upon whether they can unionize?
Face it: The collegiate powers-that-be are preempting college athletes from organizing because they fear being compelled to have to share more of their compensation (from multi-billion dollar TV/cable contracts) with the jocks than just free college tuition and room/board.

So the rich are gettin richer and me and my poor self are drownin in credit card debt. Am I supposed to be worried about a bunch of pampered pro-athletes who are livin a life of fame and fortune? If they have a problem with the way things are, they should go out and get real jobs; ones that benefit humanity. |

Let us suppose I am the typical person who becomes a professional athlete. Though there are many who are of above average intelligence the opposite is correct.
Think of some guy who gets hit in the head for a living making these kinds of analyses. Or Lawrence Taylor at his wild, coke snortin best. Or OJ.
Leave the brothers alone. Half of them would be sticking somebody up if they weren't in sports and that's the bottom line. Would you like it better if they were slinging rocks? Pimping? Carjacking?
I know somebody is going to come in with Alan Page and for every Alan Page there is a hundred William Refrigerator Perrys.
Gawd I have known some college and professional atheletes white and black and mostly I couldn't bear being around them--nor could most human beings--actually.
The brothas want what 99% of all Americans want--fine house, big car, cigars and plenty of women. Maybe some jewelry and clothes thrown in.
You know all this trying to impose superhuman standards on black people (they are just human all too human) is another form of racism. All Jews are not rich. Or Einstein. All white people are not Donald Trump. All Chinese don't know ancient wisdom. All Japanese don't know karate. |

Black folks gonna have to find they own thang. They gonna have to take that money they make there and invest it, or send their kids to college, or start other businesses in new areas that ain't been snapped up and sealed off yet--
For instance the reason for the Jewish dominance in Hollywood is because they got into it on the ground floor, when movie theaters were in storefronts and the industry was new. The men who started it made their money in furs, junk, rag picking, and the like. The white man didn't want it because it was nickels and dimes --Nickelodeon.
How many Jews in the railroads? Mining? Ship building? Agriculture.Cholly had that.

I guess I give the brothahs more credit than you do. I think if they're well-raised (which, admittedly, is a easier said than done these days) and exposed to the right kinds of influences at pivotal moments of their lives, they can make decisions that provide both individual and communal benefit.
And it's not about "superhuman standards".
It's about hiring equally competent Black attorney and/or agent, instead of a White and/or Jewish ones. It's about occasionally visiting high schools within the poor (Black) communities near to the $400M stadium you play at every other nite. It's about investing an infinitesimal portion of your wealth in small local Black mom/pop operations and HBC endowments.
And (yes, Kola) it is about dating and marrying Black women and birthing and raising Black children.
And any fool who's already been paid $10M over just a couple year who can't afford to sit-out a year to wrangle a better deal out of the NBA needs to be dropkicked up the @$$ with one Shaq's size 23 feet.
And you left out one very important element in your rebuttal of my Jewish comparison with Blacks: I asked if Jews were the MAJORITY of the talent pool within the NBA would they also own the teams.
You will NEVER convince me that if Jews were the majority of those scoring 30 points/game and hitting 50 home runs per year that Jews wouldn't also own in the Executive Skyboxes at those games.

So, yes, if Jews bought/built/drove most of the Accords, Honda was be an Israeli company.
And Jews also hold disproportionate interest/influence in media, medicine, law, banking, diamond trade and government.

But we digress. You were talking about black athletes taking over professional football (again, talking about something you are looking at from the outside--and forgetting, while you were talking about bodies, it is about MONEY!

No. Reading. I disagree.
How do you define "many"? Only about 2% of US population is Jewish. They just APPEAR to have greater numbers because they wield disproportionate power/wealth/presence. Actually, the Jews were doing okay in Europe...until a charismatic guy named Adolph came along. And you can largely credit Hitler for the ghettoes. All you have to do is open your eyes and see what they'd DO...by observing what they have DONE. Jews still have a presence in Vegas, though I agree they've largely been muscled out by the mob. But they just moved/maintain their interests elsewhere. No. I just think they have a certain culture/philosophy that promote their doing for each other. There is nothing particularly sinister about it. Frankly, I wish we Blacks could/would do the same.
You started it...hehe! I'm saying if you provide a precious/value/rare resource, you should be able to better control how and by whom that resource it is owned/control. That's basic as third grade arithmetic.
I disagree. If Jews were 90% of players they would at the very least be 90% of the owners.

Hello everyone thanks for your opinion and keep bringing it. I have very thick skin. Anytime you feel you have a message, it must be told.
We as people of the universe have been competing all of our lives. You would think football is a team sport, however its individual performance base. On TV they make you believe its a team game, but at the end of the season they give awards for individual performance, M.V.P players a single award for one man, yet he comes from a team. I've had a great pro career, 7 years in the NFL, 4 years CFL. I had a chance to keep playing this year, however my convictions out weighed my will to play. I am happy seeing brothers gettin paid but money shouldn’t be measured in terms of Gold and Silver, houses & cars, rather decision making, that can sustain generations. The game can't be played without us, we are the record breakers, trendsetters, and we fuel the NFL industry.
When the Europeans colonized Africa they said as long as we surround the Africans with materialism we will take the real wealth, their natural resources. Today on the field our natural resources is our bodies, even America has our bodies in her prison institutions where over 1 million of us are housed like cattle. This keeps us at a certain level, as much money as the Federal Government makes on us in prison. It equates to the wealth of the black NFL players contracts combined.
Money in our society rest on private property, profit, and power. The NFL has done a-lot of good things for black men; they have given us a tip of an iceberg. Understand we didn't come hear on the Love boat, we came hear on the Slave ships build by Europeans, white and black history is different in this American experiment. The most precious natural resources today in black America is our bodies, until we start making the decisions to sustain our future, we will still be exploited the same way our ancestors were. The highest price of a slave in the 18th Century went for 1,100 dollars, that’s a big jump in value. In life we all have a choice to choose our future, whether to play football or not. The NFL and America are cut from the same cloth. A player can sign a contract on Monday and get fired on Tuesday. They can dispose of us any chance they get but if we choose to walk away from a contract we suffer career suicide. What happen to a slave who ran from the plantation? He was killed. They just black list us now, but every black human is black listed, there is so much to be said about my 11-year career. Ask yourself why did Warren Sapp a player making 7 million dollars a year call the NFL a "slavery system. The public went off, how could a slave make seven million dollars a year. What made him say this? Who are we to say money makes us free. Harriet Tubman said if I could have convinced more slaves that they were slaves I could have freed thousands more.

Anthony,
Are you still playing for the NFL? If so, do you think your book will have a positive or negative influence on your career? I'm sure there are many things you think need to change within the structure of the NFL. However, what is the single, biggest change that you feel would make the greatest difference in how the majority of black athletes feel regarding the racism/discrimination they encounter?

Of course the Black male body is being exploited. But show me something that is forcing Sapp to "slave" away at making $7 million bucks per annum. See, to me, the problem with your slave analogy is that can choose to be a pro athlete, which is NOT congruent with being a slave.
If you brothah were REALLY interested in score a better deal for each other, you would band together and demand an equity interest in the sport, including all of it’s stadium revenues, merchandising, concessions/parking, naming rights, etc.
But I suspect you’ll not do that because you don’t want to bear the responsibility ownership.

The answer to your question is for Black men stop selling themselves and each other out for pennies on the dollar.
Example: The NFL is nearly 80% Black yet only 4 or 5 of its 30 head coaches are Black (and it has only been recent that there have been THAT many Black coaches). To me, that’s the PLAYERS fault. Because if the players were really socially conscious/responsible, they would demand more representation at the leadership level. |

abm,i like your point of view,you have a good intellect for debate,we have a choice to do what we wish in this society,however an NFL contract is not a tool to measure success niether is money.your correct when you say the responsibility is on the players to level the playing field socially as well economically.football players and slaves are build like machines,i reference the willie lynch theory in my book,america and the NFL are cut from the same cloth,when a nation deprives a race of people socially and economically,what happens is society imposes certain fundamental charateristics that without athletics we cant make it,even some parents exploit there own children,making them bow down to coaches at a young age,uplifting him as hes jesus himself,players are conditioned to be quiet. |

Thanks for the compliment.
But I don’t really know anything that even remotely equates to what you have witnessed/experienced.
I by no means intend to belittle/disparage pro athletes, especially you brothahs. other female company
And think an NFL contract and money are at least in part indictive of some degree of personal success. Those just should be considered the final chapter in one’s pursuit of self-actualization.
Rather. I think the problems that you Black athletes suffer in pro sports are but a microcosm of weakness throughout the broader Black community. If we all had more solidarity and acquired/utilized what was necessary to effectively compete for control, guys like you could be prepped to make decisions that benefit both you individually and our communities.
But until WE ALL get out act together, guys like you will continue to be, per your wording, "slaves". |
