Being that I brought that up in one of the threads, I figure that may be a good topic to start. How do you all think all the people who have come before would feel about how far we have come as a people? All those people who were hung, burned, shot, mowed down by wather hoses, bit up by dogs, spent years in jail and took numerous beating for THE CAUSE. Would they be impressed? ashamed? just aiiiight?

I think they'd be dismayed with how we have allowed our priorites to be co-opted by false values. Rap Stars and NBA thugs have unsurped the real heroes, and booty-shakin has become an art. The middle class is wallowing in materialism while the inner cities are in crises mode because schools aren't teaching, and going to prison has become a rite of passage. Babies are havin babies, providing future cannon fodder for drive-by shootings, and drug dealing has become a lucrative business. But other than that, us doin jes fine. Especially since black-written books have taken the publishing industry by storm

They probably would be disappointed. They probably would decry the issues that Cynique cite.

However, we all are the products of our times. And the times they done have change.

Let’s be fair, things were difficult yet a bit simpler 50 years ago than they are now. The ‘enemy’ was pretty self-evident. He quite boldly/arrogant wielded his malice.

But he’s subtler now. Actually, we don’t even know for certain WHO he is.

Is he Black or White? Republican or Democrat? Male or female. Old or young? Rich or poor? Foreign or domestic? Government or business?

So, perhaps our forebearers would be just as much confused and troubled by what to do as we appear to be.

I think your ancestors would be ELATED that you're even alive and ECSTATIC that you still--pretty much--look like them.

This alone, is a gigantic victory for them.

I think they would love you and be proud of you, because when compared to the other races of children...you have come so much further, and with far, far more against you. And you are still TRYING.

I am deeply in love with African Americans and extraordinarily proud of them as a group.

And your ancestors would be so glad...to see that I am here with you.

That would give them even more hope.

Well said Abm, well said. Cynique you said good to but I never looked at with the 'confused' eye before...I always wonder why we were confused, now i know it's just because we are. simple, yet POWERFUL.

Kola, I would agree with you in that aspect but take it deeper...reach into that R. Kelly thang now and preach on it!!! how would they feel about that, after watching the MAN rape his wife, sister and daughter how would he feel about what his great great great great grandson is doing?

ABM--

Dr. King and Malcolm were very modern Americans and I don't think they would be shocked about Hip Hop culture...although....they would definitely be disappointed at the REGRESSION. They both were involved in gangsta jazz and pool hall ho's.

Brelei---

As Ellison's book "The Invisible Man" pointed out, and as "Bluest Eye" so bravely followed up with....

...black people's communities were OVERFLOWING with an "accepted predilection for child molestation". They saw their white master do it, countless times, to their children--in front of them. And to their own white children. And then, too, many West African tribes engaged in child molestation (as a normal act) back home...so these ancestors would not be shocked by R. Kelly....they would be shocked that there are SO FEW R. Kellys in comparison to the days when my Black American mother and grandmother were little girls.

And furthermore...Black Men raped black women as frequently as white men did. Why is that fact always ignored?

Why do we ignore the fact that Black African slave women were USED TO RAPE from living in African societies?

And what about the fact that when one African tribe conquers another...the first thing the men do is rape the women of the conquered tribe.

That is for psychological destruction of the conquered men.

White men also rape the women of other White men when they conquer their society.

I, as an African woman, have a bias here, because I have been treated the worst in this country by Black Men, not white, and I have seen the far greater abuse and neglect of Black women handed out by Black men. And I don't understand this constant allegiance to a man who is not generally good to his women or his children.

And yes, I had a wonderfully perfect Black American father, my son's BLACK father is a wonderful man, etc. But that's not the point---society wise.

Lastly:

Black children in this country, especially "girls" (and especially the darkest ones)....are like dixie paper cups constantly being dirtied, smashed up and tossed in the trash by BLACK ADULTS.

The ancestors would not be happy about it, but how could they possibly judge you now when they were doing so much more of it back then???

************

What I am saying is....YOU ARE....your ancestors.

That's who you are.

And that is ALL THE VICTORY...they need.

And I love you and am proud of you for it.

I think they would be delerious with joy--they would see black doctors black lawyers, black congressmen and mayors, black millionaires a black billionaire, a black secretary of state, two black men running from the Senate from Illinois, more blacks owning homes than ever before, blacks able to go where they want as long as they have the money, black astronauts and they would wonder what the hell we have to cry about.

They had blues and double entendre songs that said the same things these gangsta rap songs say--

All this crap about the good old days--would you want them back? Would you want to have to travel at night because you couldn't stop in a motel? Use the toilet in the woods? Would you want to get lynched for whistling at a white woman or trying to vote?

Would you like to have to use ten year old text books?

A lot of these so called black businesses were owned by white men with black fronts.

Of course if you think they were so good, just go on down south or out west and find somebody who will let you sharecrop on their land and live it up, baby.

Cynique: your remark reminds me of something I just read in Debra Dickerson's The End of Blackness. She said:

"If a magic wand were to end racism tomorrow at noon, the black community would not be very much changed at 12:01. White racism doesn't mug a neighbor at the bus stop; it doesn't have unprotected sex or drop out of high school. It doesn't underachieve, it doesn't give up on the troubled students, it doesn't give in to hopelessness and settle for a life behind a broom, it doesn't favor its boys over its girls. It doesn't refuse to breastfeed, it doesn't infect 50 percent of its young with herpes, it doesn't believe wacky conspiracy theories or that AIDS is a hoax. It doesn't watch endless hours of television instead of reading to its children or overseeing their homework or taking them to a cultural event. It matters not at all whether white rates of these same phenomena are higher or lower, all that matters is that they are too high for black comfort. This is not who blacks want to be. There is work to do, and it must be done by black people, regardless of how whites behave."

So, is this true? I think so. We spend a lot of time talking about the past and slavery, but we have to look at our present and the future and figure out ways to advance our race and culture. For much of this behavior, we don't have an excuse. It has absolutely nothing to do with racism. It's all about us and our personal values and aspirations.

Going back to the ORIGINAL question....what would your ancestors think of what you've become?

I just have to say it again:

Your ancestors came from West Africa.

I know how they are. The only thing they would REALLY care about is

1) You're still alive.

2) You still look pretty much like them (they can still recognize themselves clearly IN YOU).

(And because of 400 years in slavery, those two things would be MAJOR VICTORIES for them--just think about it)

Other than that....African people wouldn't care what you've become, good or bad.

To them--whatever you're doing is just a lead-in for the next "batch of trouble".

As your people (the West Africans) used to say during the marriage ceremony: "I carry you into this world, I carry you out..."

Their job is DONE.

That's EXACTLY what they would think.

Lawchic

King Kashta said:

"There is no such thing as the past, the present or the future. For they are all three...simultaneous."

I totally agree with you about the need to stop focusing on "racism" (and personally, after 20 years in this country, I see "colorism" as a much, much bigger problem than racism and much less talked about, mainly because it indicts blacks themselves)....

.....but as you begin to build your culture and race (as you so rightly suggested we do).....I think King Kashta's words from 3,000 years ago could be of great value to us, because it acknowledges that we should always draw from all 3 dimensions in time.....1) our knowledge of what was done to us in the past--and for what "end".....2) our understanding of what is happening to us in the present..... 3) and our great dream of what we would like to see for our children in the future.

As your own people say: "You can't know where you're going, if you don't know where you've already been."

It's the "cycle" of LIVING the slave mentality that obsesses black people in this country. Not necessarily "white people" and "racism". But the CYCLE that has been set in place....that blacks find it so difficult to break out of. Kathleen's article was a perfect, perfect example of that cycle and HOW...because blacks can't put their finger on it or adequately diagnose their "sleep walk"....they remain STUCK in the cycle.

Lastly, "white supremacy" is a far larger issue than mere "racism" or "colorism". THERE IS NO WAY that we can possibly move forward....anywhere on earth....if we, all black people, don't begin to consciously identify and reject "white supremacist ideology and belief systems". YOU...are already teaching your children to identify and reject it.

But think of the millions and millions of blacks who are not....and whose self-loathing children will be "jealous enemies" of your children rather than respectful, productive peers.

Because you are a "lawyer"...someone that many people look up to as a "success"...poorer black people need people like YOU to give them permission to "tend to themselves--their own image, their own talent, their own worth".

Truly...I agree with Zora Neal Hurston's observation that there is NOTHING...absolutely NOTHING...outside of the "bloodberry" (my word) of black people's own realm that they need for survival, success and happiness. You came to America CHAINED to one another, living in each other's shit and piss--bleeding into one another.

The clay is baked. There's nothing OUTSIDE....your greatest power...is INSIDE.

This is why we need to make our "thoughts"....as PUBLIC AS POSSIBLE.

I am great believer that there's nothing more "progressive" than airing dirty laundry...getting the ear and the mouth going, so that it can bring about "thinking" and "waking up".

I do believe that good things...are coming for our children.

Because I know the resilience and inate goodness...of African people. We come from a goodness sweeter than day old rain in Dakkar.

Lawchic:

Debra Dickerson is from St. Louis the same Uncle Tom Factory that gave you Clarence Thomas and Alphonso Jackson--nuff said about that.

All this does not mean that there is not racism--the other night I was at a meeting with the white woman who is running for Governor. It was brought out that two black men here in this town who are millionaires--MILLIONAIRES!--who own a tv station, a hotel, a whole block full of small business and all kinds of real estate, could not get financing from any bank to build a supermarket in the inner city.

The cause. Red lining. You heard of that.

These people like Dickerson, who make nice money telling white folks like they want to here--why is it all of them are columnists or got a radio show, or work for some think tank or teach. Why is it that they never have a business or hold any office?

If racism were to disappear at 12:00: 50,000 or so African American voters who have so far been disenfranchised in Florida RIGHT NOW would be able to vote, you wouldn't have white politicians everywhere else trying to suppress the black vote, those racist dope laws would go away, and pimps like Dickerson would be out of a job.

Chris: Actually your post calling attention to all of the good things blacks have accomplished couldn've been written by a black conservative. You said in effect that black folks can make great strides in spite of racism. That is their mantra and you echoed it. It's easy to label people who don't agree with you as an Uncle Tom but in the process you need to effectively refute what they say instead of talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Well, I am certainly no fan of Clarence Thomas and I don't know Debra Dickerson. You know how you're supposed to keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. Just trying to do some reading and see what our black thinkers are thinking. I read Cornel West too (need to get his new one).

Besides, you may not always agree with some of the things people say and think, but there is often something of value in what they are offering. And I happen to agree with this one point. If racism ended immediately, we would still have residual issues that WE would have to deal with. Although it would be nice to have some help, we can't sit around waiting on someone to do it for us. We have to take control of our own destiny. We all have a certain amount of personal responsibility in how we live our lives everyday. That is all I'm saying.

Lawchic,

I find Dickerson’ wand waving act to be both irrelevant and ridiculous.

OF COURSE we’d be still jacked-up if racism were magically whisked away. Just because you rid a body of a disease does not mean a person will/should be instantaneously healed of all the infirmities ruthlessly wrought by the disease.

I am as much an advocate of the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" sentiment as you'll find (Though I, ironically, often find that those more inclined to utter such often had their 'straps' neatly done for'em.).

But what about the lingering EFFECTS of racism?

Is she SERIOUSLY trying to proffer that our internal problems are not largely the consequence of race-based policies, institutions and culture? If so, then I’ll probably avoid spending any more time thinking/reading a single d*mn thing said/written by her.

But I do concur that we must begin to look as (if not more) intently upon where we are headed as where we came from.

Lawchic,

I not about justifying or rationalizing BS we do to each other. But if we want to STOP some it, we must appreciate its source.

For example, if we have racist laws that incarcerate Black men for things that others are merely slapped on the wrist for, then we have a system that is effectively criminalizing Black men, many of who might otherwise be decent men.

So instead of some brothah making a minor mistaking, cleaning himself, maturing and getting a decent job for the Post Office and raising a family, what you have instead is a guy who's does prison time, get's gang-raped, joins a gang (to survive), become further school in the fine-art of criminality via his prison mates and then when he's released he's bring h*ll back into our community with him.

You are an attorney. So you should be ESPECIALLY aware of what I speak of.

So that would be an example of someone likely doing terrible things to other Blacks that might not have if the criminal justice was free of racism (which is, of course, a fantasy).

BTW, I'm a liberal. I believe in affirmative action and am very grateful for that minority scholarship that sent me through law school debt free (unlike Clarence Thomas). I would like to see more done by state and federal governments to "level the playing field." But, I also like to hedge my bets and encourage others to take on some self-improvement projects.

We've got kids out there who have no idea what they need to do to go to college. Just the other day I read an article that stated half of the people eligible for Pell Grants and student loans, etc, do not even fill out the FAFSA which is the document you need to be considered for most types of aid. Just getting some of these young people on the right path and showing them how to do this would seriously increase our numbers.

Another thing I noticed as my 15 yr old was taking the PSAT in his sophomore year is that there were about three other black males in the room with him. The PSAT is what identifies you to National Merit and National Achievement scholarship programs and sends your name to the big colleges and universities who would want to court these students. So, one of my goals for the next year is to try to help the administration of my school district see that that testing room should be full of black males next year during their junior year (since they missed it this year) and that they should be making a bigger effort to get sophomores in there. Plus, they need that extra preparation to get ready for the SAT.

ABM: I agree with ALL of that. The prison system is crazy. It is our last legal existence of slavery in this country. We say it is based on rehabilitation, but it is not. As it exists today, it is only making things worse.

And mandatory sentencing is just as bad as zero-tolerance policies. Doesn't require any thought or consideration of what is best for that individual.

Inequitable sentencing laws are atrocious and definitely racist.

Yes, there is lots of work to be done.

Lawchic,

I saw Dickerson on C-Span II early this year hocking the book you're reading now.

What I didn't like about her was she had a very condemnatorty tone and delivery. So I was instantly turned off by her.

Because, look, we all know a LOT of our $#*+ is hot/wet/stankin'. That is EVEN new.

So I don't need you to stand at some podium runnin' me down for the benefit of your White massahs.

I believe in earnest self-assessment and criticism. But JEEZ! We've been getting out tail kicked her for the better part of 500. So, yes, sho your brothah/sistah the way, but sho' us some love too.

BTW: Kola should like this one: Dickerson has a WHITE husband.

It's hard to make my point when I'm in a hurry and have a lot of distractions around me, but what I was trying to say in my previous post was that when Chris wrote about all the accomplishments of black people, he "inadvertantly" proved what conservatives contend when they claim that racism is not an insurmountable barrier. BTW, Chris, if racism disappeared tomorrow, then there wouldn't be a problem in Florida. But, I admit that it's hard to be black and not be ambivalent about so many issues; most of us are both liberal and conservative.

I lived with a white man myself for 5 years ABM.

And while I can't stand Dickerson for "other" reasons----I could much more understand a black woman marrying a white man, than a black man who is outnumbered 8 to 1 by black women, not marrying one.

And I LOOOOVE Quincy Jones who has NEVER married a black woman---simply because, I am convinced that he loves us. There are also BLACK MEN that I personally know, who are married to whites, that are wonderful men that I love.

I'm not against "interracial" unions.

I just vehemently disagree that "LOVE" has anything to do with [the majority] of these choices in America....because what I see is an epidemic of SELF-HATE and black people "borrowing" genes and chromosones to become less black.

Have you ever looked at the photograph of the JACKSON FAMILY grandchildren?

It's so fucking disgusting!

20 grandkids and not more than 3 are....BLACK. Just a bunch of mixed, foreign looking Asiatic and latin-Indian LOOKING children. They look NOTHING like the Jacksons. Jermaine's son looks like a full-blooded Mexican.

This is the "harvest" of a black family that has cut off their own noses and whitened their skin. They HATE US SO DEEPLY (their ancestors)...that they wouldn't even give birth to us. That's how deep their hatred runs. And yet Black Americans defend it...call it love.

Lawchic,

I am glad you see how racism can result in us doing things to each other than we might not otherwise do.

But you don't have to proclaim fidelity to the progressive cause on my behalf. I don't have a problem with one being conservative (or liberal) on certain issues. But what I can't abide is how foks on both sides of the political aisle omit and lie purely to make profit.

That goes for the Black foks who are engage in such too.

And I am living proof of the benefits of self-improvement. But let's be real and honest: Few if ANY foks make with out some major help. It's just that some get the help from the government and others get help from a rich father (who has rich oil buddies up dah @$$, Director of the CIA, a member of Congress and President of the United States).

And I too think we must become more competitive in all of the major academic arenas, including standardized exams, research/development, engineering, etc.

But I don't think college is the answer for EVERYONE. In fact, part of the problem with the Black community is we have become deluded into thinking it's either sheepskin or bust.

The truth is there are MANY people who earn great fortune who can barely conjugate a verb. In fact, I know a couple of millionaires. And NONE of them have college degrees.

If you apply your sincere/hard efforts into talents that that you enjoy, you have a shot at doing okay out there.

BTW...

after reading Dickerson's book....I am convinced that she's a self-hating cow who married a white man....because he's white....and for status in America.

There's no way that she would wish to procreate black children or marry black, because that would go against her assimiliation.

She's TRASH. And she's talked some shit about me in public, too, so I hope we never meet.

Wasn't Quincy Jones married to Peggy Lipton (white chick from Mod Squad)? Anyway, they have kids together.

Cynique,Cynique, Cynique:

I am not talking out of both sides of my mouth, which is readily apparent.

Should you ask me or a black conservative if the sky is blue or water wet you would get the same answer.

The question was what would our FOREFATHERS (and I guess, Mothers, too by implication) have thought of our progress.

The slave of 1600-1865 would have been wondering what the freedman of 1870-1900 was crying about. The freedman would have wondered what the Harlem dweller of the 20's was crying about.

My father always asked me what was I crying about. He had to go past four schools because he was not allowed to go to school with white people. He, a man much smarter than I, had no chance of going to college. None. I wonder what the youngsters are crying about.

This is not so difficult to understand. I'm sure blacks all along the spectrum could, if they used their imaginations, see that, for all the problems and complaints we have, this is much better than picking cotton from dawn to dusk, seeing your family members sold off, eating garbage, etc.

A black conservative--what is it that they have to conserve?-- wonders what all other blacks are crying about--then when he or she gets shafted he screams racism and bloody murder.

So, true. I do tell my children that when choosing their life's work to find something they love and would do for free, then figure out a way to get paid to do it!

P.S. The daughter graduating from college in Dec. will be an Industrial Engineer. She has a gift for science and math and we encouraged her to use it.

OK, Chris. I'll back off if you will quit implying that I yearn for the "good old days" which you contend were really the bad old days. I know this. I'm not saying that things went from good to bad; but I am inclined to gripe that in some areas things went from bad to worse.

Ya'll have fun. I'll be back in a while. My son forgot his pre-game dinner for tonight's football game and I have to take it to school. I'll see what mischief you folks are up to when I return.

PS: I still have those milk chocolatey pictures of you in a secret hiding place in my basement. If you don't tell your spouse, I won't tell mine. <wink!>

Kola,

I find it interesting that deride a Sidney Pointer for marrying ONE White woman yet give Quincy Jones a pass when he's married FIVE!

I think you should admit to being close/personal friends with either him or someone in his family. Because that's the ONLY reason I can see for your duplicity here.

She reminds me of a chick who has a vendetta against her own people, especially Black men.

When you read my autobiography "Diary of a Lost Girl".....you'll get more than a page full, ABM.

It's the chapter called "The Authentic Black Man".

Now if only I can win this war with my publisher to include that chapter in the finished book.

Which I will.

Cynique:

I know you don't yearn for the bad old days I am saying that things look different when you apply a different persepective--so much of our grousing is about what somebody else is doing--"those splibs are listening to rap music and wearing their caps backwards and it just tears me up." They could do better--so could all these white folks out in Valley Park staying 11 to a trailer and cooking meth.

And about the Uncle Tom Factory remark this is not from my imagination--they are around here hand picking these negroes this is probably not the only area they are doing it--actually they don't have to go looking because they are stepping forward to volunteer--Clarence Thomas, for instance, went to school with John Danforth (who was a Senator from here and backed him for the Supreme Court) and worked with John Ashcroft (who was Senator and is now your Attorney General) in the Missouri Attorney General's office--they knew what they had when they backed him for all those positions at the EEOC and Court of Appeals and for the Supremes. they got a farm team picked from various law firms, foundations non profit agencies and the local Republican Party.

Do you think they just happen?

True, Chris. But many of those black people whose praises you were singing may very well have fallen into the category of being Uncle Toms, or at least in the category of being "tokens". People of all races exercise expediency and do what it takes to get ahead, obviously feeling that owe allegiance only to those of their own ilk. They are accused of exploiting their race, but it's easy to do this when their people aid and abet their own setbacks. We like to think that one side is all wrong and the other side is all right but this is a cloudy isssue especially since emotions and subjectivity influence the rationales of the "victims." Progress is slow when advancement is hindered by embracing half-truths. It's also slow when we expect our foes to be moral.
