Bleek--
in my short story for THE PARIS REVIEW entitled "The Swallowers"...I deal with this very question.
It's about a black West African woman who is called "The Racist" by her whole village...because she is vehemently trying to stop the young people from using bleaching creams and taking the Michael Jackson Pill to achieve lighter skin.
To these young Africans who want to be white...."SHE" is the racist....for trying to limit them to blackness. The whole village hates her, because she is a "cock block" between them and their little blue pills from Europe.
It's a very powerful story. There are many other subplots related to an even more shocking development for the heroine...but I wanted to deal with the question you posed as the root of the story. I'm proud of it, and because of the undeniable PRESTIGE of the "Paris Review", and because their editor is taking quite a risk in publishing my very controversial story.
BUT....you don't ask Kola Boof write a story for you if you want "status quo--safe black literature".
The Paris Review is published in N.Y. 4 or 6 times a year--I forgot which. You can look for my story in the Summer 2005 issue. I think you'll really love it.

I think a racist is a person or a group that has the power to suppress another based on their color, religion, national origin, and who does so at every given opportunity. I also think that it is any group who refuses to recognize that they are a priviledged group who benifits in EVERY ASPECT of their lives based solely upon the color of thier skin, and refuse to acknoledge how that priviledged positions impacts others. |

I found it very interesting that you defined someone who refuses to recognize that they are part of a priviledged group who benefits in EVERY ASPECT of their lives based solely on the color of their skin... just as much of a racist as someone who does recognize and has no problem profiting from this priviledge.
I don't know that i've ever considered it that way. I've always considered those who refused to recognize their priviledge and benifit -problems, but never racists. Reading it now though, I think that I definitely agree with you there.
Considering this definition though, can black folks be racists within their own culture? I think of the tragic mulatto and his/her flight to white for a better life. Were they racist? To be white, she has to live white and to live white is to have priviledge with that priviledge comes benefits, with the benefits come supression right?
Does the tragic mulatto still exist? Has she/he been redefined?? Lil-Kim reminds me of a new school tragic mulatto. She isn't a product of a black momma and white daddy,but she like Michael Jackson have taken advantage of new age medical industries and made themselves (or at least tried to make themselves) mulatto-like. Are the acts of folks like Kim and Mike racist? Or, is it just self hate?

I'm always called a racist, BLEEK. Even PARIS REVIEW's board of editors were leery about me writing for the mag...until the editor went to bat for me, telling them how powerful and important he (a white male) believes my work is.
The woman in my story is a "metaphor" for how many BLACK people react to my Kola books...insisting that I'm "airing dirty laundry", bringing shame on black folks by exposing stuff like The Michael Jackson Pill...exposing my breasts like a savage, embarrassing the "family".....proudly talking about affairs I've had with terrorists.
Just being a poster child for the "Wanton, African Harlot" stereotype.
Their real problem is that I uncover (and quite methodically) the shit that poisons our minds. And weak people don't like their FUN disrupted.
I had a little white girl named "Cribbitch" in my story "Day of Vow" (from the book "Long Train") and you don't know the FIGHT I had to go through to keep that name....and in my story "The One You Meet Everywhere" (from "Politically Inspired"), I had a cool white girl who acts black named "BRAID BITCH". In that story one of the black girls says about BILL CLINTON..."ain't that nigga foine?".......and I had FIGHT 3 WEEKS to get them to not cut that line out!!!! It scared the shit out of the white editors.
And my book "Long Train" ends with a WHITE MAN being 'castrated' by a black girl. Jesus Christ comes to escort her to heaven after she's cut the White Man's dick off...and been shot between the eyes by the police. She gives a triumphant closing line that is sort of "famous" now on college women studies campuses.
SO YES...I am often called a racist and that's why I'm with a SMALL INDIE PUBLISHER for most of my books....and not one of the majors. They claim my stuff is too controversial, too BLACK, too "disturbing".

People routinely confuse racism with bigotry. A bigot is a biased, prejudiced individual. A racist is someone who wields power, someone who is able to exert the influence which enables him to set the racial policies that often become the norm.
I am not a racist. But I have been guilty of being biased.
I don't think the Tragic Mulatto still exists. Women of all races seem to be striving for that idealized image which more and more seems to neither white or black but - golden. |

Me, personally. I'm a BLACK woman...not as Americans say "a woman of color".
So I have no desire to be "golden". And I definitely would equate being "golden" as part of a Mulatto Phenomenon of the Western Hemisphere (remember the war in Haiti in which the BLACKS were eventually forced to defeat their own mixed race offspring, because once the mixed race achieved enough number--they refused to share a country with the black majority??)....and in Sudan, with the ARABS (the vast majority of whom are NOT black in color, but white-olive like my Father)...I can't aspire to such a state, because I have known first hand what these "golden people" do to blacks once their numbers are great enough. Their true color and their RACISM comes out. They feel absolutely NOTHING in killing off whole villages of blacks.

I'm not attacking what Cynique sees or feels....or even saying that we're talking about the same thing (I don't think we are)....but in many parts of the world, we blacks fear GOLDEN people even more than we fear WHITES. The Beja (mixed race) will cook your children and skin you, remove your eyeballs for fun where I come from. I would not want to give birth to one.
As for white women "idealizing" GOLDEN as a new image...that's only COSMETICALLY and as a FAD. It's not even a NEW fad. Whiteness IS and shall always be the HEIGHT of superiorty to the children of EUROPA and no white woman is stupid enough not to know otherwise. No matter what TRICKS are played on the stupid black masses. White people enjoy a "TAN" and exploiting fine black bodies....that's about it.
They definitely want their blonde hair and blue eyes far more than they want to be GOLDEN. Otherwise, they'd all be Italians and Greeks by now.

And by the way, BLEEK...have you heard of "Day of Vow"?
It's a South African holiday for WHITES that celebrates the white invaders who established a "Day of Vow" (sort of like your American Thanksgiving) in which they VOWED that they will "never, ever" give up the land and riches that they conquered in South Africa and with the birth of each new generation of White Afrikkaner children...they make this VOW over their children and in their children's ears. The children and elders have a FEAST...to renew the VOW each year.
And if you go to the so called NEW SOUTH AFRICA...you will see that the whites and blacks are both...to this day...closet White Supremacists. Even the COLOREDS parttake in this vow as a recent documentary showed...their allegiance to the White Minority still in place, even after apartheid has been put asunder.
The Day of Vow is upheld by all. It is still a top CELEBRATED holiday.
SO I wrote a story to denounce it.

BLEEK....there's an essay by one of Nigeria's most renowned scholars, you've probably heard of him...the irracible CHINWEIZU.
It's called "What is a Nigger?"
When and if you email me, I will forward it to you.
This essay deals quite perilously with the issue of black self hate and the destruction that "niggers" do as a...ZOMBIE FORCE (white insured watch dogs)...to keep a true black aesthetic from taking root in Post-Segregation, Post-Apartheid and Post-Colonialism.
Anyone who loves their blackness, which is natural...is basically painted as a "racist" or "separatist", unwillingly to get along with the nice white people...who deserve not just our forgiveness, but our children's very lives.
Of course...Nigeria's Chinweizu is a stellar writer. You would have to read his essay.
Many of your top Black American "literary" writers have been passing it around...and I felt so honored when one of them sent it to me.

Well, I think all people can be prejudice. And all but the most decent people are at least in part that.
But I think for one to qualify as being racist, he or she has to be capable of wielding prejudice to the real/profound detriment of others. Thus, people often assert that Black can't be racist because we seldom have the ability to use bias to negatively impact non-Black.
I would agree that that is largely the case. But I do think that there are areas where Black have/wield advantage in racist way. For example, you can argue that what Blacks hip-hoppers did to Vanilla Ice was racist. Because they used Ice's color (or lack there of) to ruin him.
And, frankly, I think that that some of our earlier attempts to preclude Moonsigns from visiting Thumper's Corner could be catagorized as a (unfortunate) form of racism.
I think the both over/subtle color-caste system we African Americans perpetuate amongst our ownselves (which Kola quite eloquently recount) is a form of racism, although instead of it being expressed outwardly it manifests with our own community.
I guess some of our celebrities can be consider a nouvo-version of the "tragic mulatto" (which is, by the way, a phrase that is "tragic" in of itself). I would think, though, how I might distinguish Michael Jackson from his "tragic" predecessors is he largely CHOSE to be what has become him while a "mulatto" born generations prior had little control over how he or she was often rudely received by both Blacks and White alike. |

Well, Moonsigns, the conventional wisdom is that in America, black folks can't be racists because when they display their bigotry it does not impact on the bigger picture. But white people can be racists since the pieces are already in place for them to discriminate on the basis of color because racism has become institutionalized in our society. |

As a white American you take your privileges for granted. You don't know what racism is because you've never really experienced it. Racism is not just disliking people who are different from oneself.
Racism is denying those different people who are qualified jobs, housing, capital, due process, voting rights, etc.
And Black people in the United States have NEVER been in a position (or especially inclined) to treat others like that. |

Yes, I am a racist...but mainly in my head and with other friends. I LOVE to laugh at Chinese people when they're talking ("Dang dang dong ping may wong! Square or woun nail? Fi' dolla!") and when they're at the club all cracked out.
I like making fun of white people and laughing at them when they get embarrassed and turn beet red and how they will sit at sidewalk cafes in 30 degree weather, some Hispanics...that like hilarious thread of Kola's about the 10 things one should know...

I notice that you failed to mention that in between all of Abm's comments that I told him to "stop" and "be nice" --I do have my limits. I'm not the one telling him I'll email him pictures of my "hole", nor am I the one needing to press myself against men when I first meet them, and I don't email men on the board. I don't need to, you do.
Abm has always maintained that we know what it is and what it isn't. Even if he said what he did to you, it is for a reason. This is a WRITER'S COMMUNITY.
I've actually WORKED for some of the people, both male and female on this board as a writer.
Emailing them is par for the course. And it's no secret that ABM and KOLA is one of the longest running soaps on this board, and just 18 months ago, was SO POPULAR--that editors at Random House, JET and Atria built their coffee breaks and lunches around it.
Then I got kicked off by Thumper's evil jealousy. Then by overwhelming demand...I was brought back...as Snake Girl, then Passion, then Kola, then Miss Wysteria and now Kola Boof.
And if I'm not with ABM..people write me emails complaining profusely. For instance...when I had the HOTZ for Lambd after meeting him D.C.---I got tons of fan mail admonishing me that my place is with ABM.
And when the old lion, ABM, started "being nice" to you---even more mail poured in, hilarious notes saying: "You're not going to let her take your man, are you Kola!?"
Many of these people writing me,MOOON....are top GROWN ASS editors and executives at Publishing Houses and Magazines like Random House, Black Scholar and HONEY.
And yes, Moon, I've been likened to Sylvia Plath and Virginia Wolf for my "emotional ambiguities". And compared to "Zora Neal Hurston" for my eccentricities. And have had a hard road being a confused young woman...and now am coming into my own.
I'm just me. A very UNORTHODOX author in a traditionally "conservative" black market. And it still doesn't stop me from writing for The Paris Review or having books published and praised.
Who knows, Moon? Maybe that gutt-wrenching naked honesty just rings a bell in people...no matter how many layers of MATURITY they cloak themselves in?
