My (many) discussions with Yukio, the Cosby flap and current talks between Moonsigns and A_womon and Yukio have recently caused me to ponder the following:

It is interesting how the young often accuse their elders of being condescending and the elders decry the hostility of their juniors. I am unclear whether the opinions of either or both generations are valid. Upon first thought, I might assert the young overestimate the values of their budding knowledge and experience and mistakenly shirk the lessons/blessings passed on to them from their parents. And the elders erroneously reject that a changing times demands their children evolve into something other than mere facsimile themselves and forget that they too once appeared as stridently defiant of their parents as their children now appear to them.

But there seems to be one constant among everyone: Contemptuous blame for the prior and succeeding generation(s). Upon THAT, almost ALL of us agree.

Is the current strife within the Black community simply a current manifestation of the (perpetual) generation gap? Or is the gulf between son, mother and grandfather greater than it has ever been? And why do you think/feel as you do?

Abm:

As between the baby boomer and hip hop generations, it is a current manisfestation of the perpetual generation gap, but it has been exascerbated by the much greater incidence of divorce and single family homes among the boomers.

Many boomers have commented particularly on the hostility for older males the hip hop males have--all I can say is what I said to the more virulent "men-ain't-no-good" crusaders among the boomer women-- "I ain't the one who did you wrong. You need to go get that mf and call him out."

Just wait--the hip hoppers (1963-1980) are turning 40--they are getting ready to get in for it themselves from their children (what will will call them? The Post 9/11 generation?) and we , foxy grandparents, can sit back and watch the show.

Chris,

Hmm? You make some sage and provocative observations. I agree our fractured familial structure has widened/deepened the chasm between mother and child. In fact, in many communities, the only behest passed from sire to son are genes, anger and an occassional child support check.

I especially appreciate your point that hip/hopper are themselves about to catch it from their kids. (A_womon, your set is about to find out whether you can take-it as well as you dish-it. Hehe!) Man, I hope increasing instances of intra-familial slayings don't ensue.

I would also add that the young dissatisifaction with their elders may also stem from their becoming acquainted how the national/global economic system works, and they decry their elders relatively impotent positioning with the world's economy. Moreover, it is difficult to reinforce standards of patience, hardwork, duty/obedience, decorum and education when their kids are constantly made to witness people (e.g., Snoop Dog, teenage NBA'er Labron James, 50-Cents, Ludacris, etc.) who appear to enjoy great wealth/fame without strictly observing all (if any) such tenets.

Cynique:

Having had it out with us in the 60's, and seeing what their mindless opposition wrought, those of them that CAN still think should be coming forth to mediate the conflict.

But as Abm said, they have other things on their minds--like meeting their makers.

A_womon,

Slow it down a tick or 2, Baby Girl. No one is exclaiming that YOU are old. But I think Chris was saying that even your hip/hop generation is beginning to age.

Sugar Hill Gang, Grand Master Flash, Melle Mel, Curtis Blow and Russell Simmons are over 40. Run/DMC and Dr. Dre are 40. Snoop is +35.

So, like the rest of us, even they (and eventually you) will have to answer to their kids for the mess that we all have helped make of the world.

Cynique,

Correction: I NEVER "suck". But I LOVE to 'lick'. <wink!>

Chris,

My issue has not been primarily about whether or not and/or to what degree Black men are on the DL. Nor have I argued 'we' are exclusively engaged as such.

The REAL issue is whether this DL phenomenon is contributing to the growing incident of HIV/AIDS amongst Black women/children. I think that were their no HIV/AIDS, this would be hardly worthy the rampant discussion it continues to engender.

hmmm...it is generational. Also, those post- civil rights generations bear a burden that others did not, which is the illusion of the eradification of jim and jane crow and the responsibility and expectation of success. Another thought: African americans are really young as a group...what? Almost 400 yrs ol? We have yet to have a real middle class(though we've always had a quite small middle class even during slavery)...i'm speakin of wealth not salary...and unlike jews we seem to have forgotten to maintain a cultural group consciousness...hence, black institutions have whithered and the natural and normative generation gap is intensified, for we do not know eachother nor provide for eachother. How else does a rather religious community brake from an destructive values? Not just the poor but the high salaried...the only differnce is that the latter can OFTEN afford what they consume...

Then with what do you "confuse" "wisdom"?

"Education"?

"Verbosity"?

"Dogma"?

"Stubborness"?

abm: hmmmm...none of those words would I confuse w/wisdom.

Why did u chose those words? I chose mine because your initial post suggests a relationship between age and wisdom(lessons/blessings). My point to you was that wisdom can come from anyone, for it is the experience not the age that provides the resource for sagacity.

chrishayen: haha....yes, sir.

Yukio,

True wisdom requires at least some time, which is accompanied by age, to place experiences within broader, more complete context and perspectives.

Lambd,

Well, wherever it is, I hope it ain’t anywhere near Lame@$$ Loser Lambd Lane (Hey look, Lame@'...uh...I mean, Lambd. That's some good "alliteration"!)

abm: no doubt.

There is no formula for wisdom, really. Personally, my experience has been that people w/wisdom can give it and take it, regardless of age; others, on the other hand, who oft confuse their age w/ wisdom can only hear themselves, and they are often dependent on giving their socalled wisdom to reinforce to others and themselves a sense of personal integrity. I see this more often in men than women...just some thoughts.
