Chime in with your opinion, and I want to hear YOUR honest opinion. Not the opinion of your neighbor, or your mother, or your pastor, or what you think is PC, or what you think hip hop is, or what you think a radical white man thinks, or what you think you should say because a conservative asian nine year old could be reading this and we have to show an example. I want to know YOUR personal opinion, so dig deep, take a minute, breathe, and riddle me this:
Does the word 'nigga, nigger, or niggah' bother you at all? Why and/or why not?

When I was coming up, niggas on the street would refer to each other as niggas all the time. Nigga this, nigga that, nigga betta gimme my money, nigga what, my nigga, nigga shut yo' mouth. There was even a white dude that used to say nigga all the time. Everyone did. He was there all the time. He used to hustle. He could handle himself. So he hung. Everybody knew he was white. Everybody heard him say nigga. People got used to 'white boy' sayin' nigga. We used to warn him that one day somebody that don't know him was gonna crack his skull. And that's what happened. I mean, he wasn't a bad dude. He hung, he sold drugs. But so did everybody else. One day that word slipped out at the wrong time around the
wrong thug and he got popped. The point is, we came up around that word and got used to it. Even to the point that this white dude could say it on the regular around us. We referred to him the same way...This nigga here...Now, if some other white dude would have come on the block with that same nigga crap, he would have got his wig split. Hell, 'whiteboy' probably would've done the splittin'.

Today, I got no feelings for that word. One way or another. I think people give that word way too much power...personally. I guess it depends on how its used and who's doing the usin'.

Lambd:

It depends on how it is used and who's doin' the usin'. I don't like to hear it from black people at some times and places--my mother, God Rest Her Soul, was from the old school and used to call her infant and toddling grandchildren that when she got upset--we would get into it over that. I was never able to break her of it. Why start the kids out with that, was my idea. I don't particularly like to hear black people use it in mixed company, and a black person could call me that under certain circumstances and I would be highly insulted--say if Alan Keyes called me one.
I do not like to hear white people use it under any circumstances. They are always trying to either show they are hip using it, which they are not, or feeling you out seeing how tight you are by using it.

If a whiteboy allowed me to call him whatever he was (honky dago mick, kike wop, polack, kraut etc etc) I still wouldn't feel cool with him using it (I'm sure he would have a problem)--as between races these are not terms of endearment. Why can't we use our names? A person ain't hip because he lets me call him out of his name.

Maybe the word has too much power--on the other hand a person is entitled to be called whatever he will. I have a friend who will let nobody, even his parents, use his given name, Darryl. This is America.

Lambd,
I guess I am inclined to agree with you as your experience appears to be very similar to that of my own. Even now, me and my best friend call each other nigga almost everytime we speak. And we have known and loved each other since we were nine years old.

Dude, when I was a kid we called each other "Ni--er" dis and "Ni--er" dat all the time too I did however know better than to use the word, or any curse word, in front of an elder, a parent, mixed company, etc. It make my skin crawl to hear young boys use the word.

Today I don't use the word. I've been fortunate not have been a position which warranted use of the word. I'm not going to use the word in front of my kids, in mixed company or around people I trully respect (unless I'm reciting an old Richard Pryor joke). I have limited opportunities to use the word.

Speaking of Richard Pyror I recall, like yesterday when he proclaimed, that he would stop using the "N" word. I said to myself aw sh-t, now this Ni--er is not going to be funny anymore.

I failed to appreciate why at the time why he stopped using the word -- part of the reason is that he simply grew up.

Today young people use the word in front of strangers, they use it on rap videos to sell to white people, the word does not mean anything to them.

Because one fails to appreciate the meaning of a given word, does not mean that word does not have meaning. In orher words, ignorance does not change the definition of a word.

Lambd, of course white boy should not have been killed over the use of that word in that context. Indeed, no one should be killed over any words, in any context -- that would be giving words too much meaning.

I don't care for the casual use of the word. However, if I'm around my boys and one of them use it I'm nt going to get up on my high an condem him. I was in a bar, in Harlem (all Black crowd), this past weekend and a Brother I was talking to used the word and a Sister called him out on it. I have never seen that happen before.

It appears people seem to be coming increasingly less tolerant for the word. In my mind that is a good thing.

Hey Troy, and All,

hip hop has changed the way the word is viewed. It does matter who says it and how, but white boys are calling each other "nigga" now. Not niggER cause that will STILL get you a proper beat down. Black dudes call white boys my nigga,if they cool, or nigga, it's no longer a race specific word used in this way.

Yukio and I wrote about this generational type difference in the use of this word on another thread. Lamd, you know the one cause you posted there.

Peace

A_woman it is defintely a generational thing...

Do you really believe there is a difference between nigga, niggaz or nigger? Similarly, is there is no difference between beeoch and bitch?

Suppose someone refered to you, on this board, as a, nigga beeoch? Would you take that as a joke?

Actually I always assumed the slight pronunciation and spelling change in words like this was to slip my the censors.

Well Troy,

Your answer just shows that you and your generation just don't git IT. Just like I'm sure that your parents didn't get some of the things you said!

Actually< I think I said and if you had read my post more carefully, You would've understood, I said that it matters WHO says NIGGA and HOW they say NIGGA, I aint said nothin about bitch or beotch. I hope if any one presumed they could call me either, that they could take what I call them back!! If anyone called someone out of their name and was trying their damnedest to be offensive as it appears in your example, then if they had any sense they would expect to get their asses kicked and dissed right back and THEN some.

You are talking about two different things here.

It does bother me. Reason being, words do have meaning. Though change has occured in how people use it so freely, it won't change it's origin --which is hateful. Anything that is birthed in hate and flourished in hate can't produce love. While my partner will use it on occassion in conversation with close friends ("nigga"),it is not the norm. I hear young men and women using more often than older folks and generally, more men saying it than women. It disgusts me to hear women say it --for me, it somehow lessens their feminine principle. Women are givers of life --of love. A huge part of our beauty is that we have the ability to powerfully and positively influence thru our actions and words. To hear non-blacks use it is even worse. Regardless of how it seems so progressive, I compare it to the word bitch --it will never be cool. However, I dislike it when I hear anyone using it casually and so loosely. But really, to each their own.

My children hear it all the time (various social situations) however, I'm training them to be mindful of the weight/history of words. Will they make their own decisions? Yes. Do I hope they will know better? Of course.

Much respect!

it puzzles me how people who are supposedly so in touch with the way things are, refuse to move on! Here's a little history lesson for those of you who don't know.

the word nigger is derived from the word niggardly which means to be stingy!! therefore the word was never meant to be applied to a particular race. However
white people chose to shorten the word and apply it to black people. How TRAGIC that centuries later, black people still allow the word to affect them in such negative ways.

Those who choose to stay trapped in the past and allow this word to keep them there that's ya business!! Don't try to keep me and others like me held down as you choose to be! As I have said before, ANY word can be offensive, it is all in The HOw and the Why.

And please feel free to equate that word with any word you choose... just don't sling it or any other word my way in an insulting manner and we'll be cool! I don't live my life based on what SOME consider offensive and unLadylike, it is all relative! One persons likes or dislikes are no more important or qualified than another's

Peace

A womon

Though we are centuries later, it doesn't change the fact that innocent people shed their blood for that word, and because of that word. Honoring this does not mean I am, or anyone who thinks like me, is stuck in the past. The freedom of my family is based on the blood that was shed so we could be here today --thriving, learning, traveling, loving and living as peaceful as possible. My point of view on this issue isn't birthed from a lack of being culturally progressive, or lack of being "hip", it comes from a sincere place of appreciation for the courage and self-respect it took in the struggle, and continued struggle, for equality . I take it seriously. I speak for myself only.

You're definitely correct in that "one persons likes or dislikes are no more important or qualified than anothers." That is not the issue at hand though. The question was if it bothersome to one or not.

As of recent, hip-hop and the hip-hop generation seem to say they have taken ownership of the word and it is tolerated. Acceptable to the point where (in some circles of "friends) a non-black can say it in the presence of blacks and some think it is acceptable. The choice of conversation between any people, regardless of race, is a reflection of the condition of the soul. Now, look at our society in general --tons of AIDS, STDS, bastard children, broken homes...broken lives. I think it is safe to say we've downward spiraled as a whole. If you, or anyone who thinks like you, treats the undercurrents of such negative trends (which is mirrored in talk, walk, dress, behavior) so lightly, and call it progressive --that is what is tragic.

If the word is truly weightless, as you first suggested, how can it be insulting?

All people, myself included, must be mindful!

Moosigns,

It appears, as Yukio stated, you have a penchant for taking people's words and spinning them your own way. Read closely this time:

I SAID and will say again, ANY word can be insulting; it is all in the how and the why its used! Got that? now when did I ever say the word was anymore weightless than another?
And as far as what our forefathers died for, I could say the same thing everytime I see a black man with a white woman!! But aint none of yall tryin to be stuck on that, right? right.
Maybe you really are from the moon or some other planet, but dig this.
Now, my ancestors died for a lot more than someone calling them a nigger, they were murdered for various and sundry reasons, not the least of which is some white woman screaming rape after she has been caught quenching her sexual frustrations with a black man and then not having the courage to admit what she had done. but I will leave that alone for now. they also died to be treated as human beings and not cattle.... yes the struggle for equality, did not begin with the word nigger!and YES i have great respect for what they suffered bled and were lynched for, let us all remember that and let us not try to spin it to suit any argument!

I am sick to death of you and those like you trying to pin the downward spirals of society on hip and and those who love it. What if there were no hip hop, would girls no longer have babies out of wed lock, would there be no fighting over name calling? in other words, moonsigns, would all of our social ills be cured if hip hop never existed? We need only to look back in history a bit to see that these social ills existed way before hip hop was even thought of.Yeah, right that's what I thought.

Broken homes and bastard children and AIDS are not inherent to the black community...it seems you will say anything to TRY to prove ya point, moonsigns, but in case you didn't know, the problems you name are problems of the society at large, not exclusive to one community. So what's ya point?

All N-word polemics,
I would not argue against your view of the n-word. But I have never considered it to be the anathema that many of us do. I have, as A_womon states, considered its use within the context of how it is presented. Moreover, I look forward to the day when the mere utterance of such by the wrong (i.e., "a White") person does NOT incite a myriad boring, redundant and useless protests, discussions and arguments that result is in little more than a lot of loud noise and bad breath expelled into the ether.

Frankly, our time would be MUCH better applied focusing on what others consistently DO, not what they (often, perhaps, in an emotional moment) SAY. Because I wager that those foks who are giving us ALL the MOST grief are smart enuff to avoid ever uttering the word.

A womon

You clearly wrote that it is tragic (in caps at that) that centuries later black people still allow a word to affect them in such negative ways, yet, depending on "the hows" and "the whys", it can be insulting. Your opinion is purely circumstanstial. If you expect people to tolerate your 'move on' theory, expect to tolerate that not everyone thinks like you.

No matter how anyone tries to glamorize this word, it still has dergatory connotations. If it didn't, you wouldn't have stated that it could be insulting. Not every and ANY word can be insulting, sorry.

I don't pin all the ills of society on hip-hop. Sure, there is some good hip-hop, however, unfortunately, negative work is highlighted in the media more often --and people love it. Album sales prove it. While it's not a the entire puzzle, it is a piece --the negative stuff contributes. Yes, social ills existed way before hip-hop, however, social ills are far more worse now. That isn't even an issue to discuss, it's too obvious.

Moonsigns wrote:
"Now, look at our society in general --tons of AIDS, STDs, bastard children, broken homes....broken lives. I think it is safe to say we've downward spiraled as a whole."

Never once did I say these were inherent to the black community. Everyone suffers and I care about all beings. No, I won't say just anything to try to prove my point, especially not the "n" bomb to prove I'm culturally hip.

I'm surely not from the moon A womon, but definitely from the heavens. I know you are sick to death of people like me, however, various outlooks on life are a part of life. The world is full of people who don't think a thing like you. The world is full moonsigns.

Moonsigns,

I feel what you are saying about honoring our ancestors. But I don't think we achieve that via continuing to make a single word into some impenetrable monster.

Now, I too would not appreciate being called the n-word under in certain situations by White people. However, I would likely react similarly to them calling me "boy". So what do I do, do I, because "boy" has also often been wielded to demean/disparage Black men, castigate the use of THAT term as well?

What about "gal"?

"Spade"?

"Midnight"?

"Shine"?

"Coon"?

Those, among a myriad other words, have been use to disparage Blacks. Do we cast them aside as well?

It is as if we fear that the mere utterance of the word will incite White people to start burning crosses on our front lawns or something.
When, in the end...it is just a word. Nothing more. Nothing less. It is only as powerful or impotent as we choose for it to be.

Also, on the point of honoring our forebears - and to support A_womon's arguments - I find that often we are very selective/convenient about how we do that. Honestly, I looked at the very tumultuous, very discombobulated Black community and can't help wondering whether Harriet Tubman and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be pissed at ALL of us, no matter WHAT we speak. And I doubt that even Oprah, Cosby and Colin Powell escape their righteous disappointment.

A_womon,

Well, I had a hankering that you were (impatiently) seeking a chance to try to take a chunk out of our favorite lunar fem. And uh Oh, now. It's is looking up in here like ol' girl done finally pitched into your sweet spot.

You GOOONNE guurrl!

HEHE!

Anyway. I find it interesting you mention that the n-word originates from "niggardly". A few years ago, a Democratic Senator (his name slips me) caught Holy Hell in the press for publicly using that very word though he says he intended to use only as you previously stated. I guess, though, it didn't help his cause that he is a former (& reformed?) member of the Ku Klux Klan.

Moonsigns/A_womon,

Seriously though, you ladies play nice. Otherwise, yawl gonna get things all heated up in here, randy sorts like Lambd and myself (who never saw a chick-fight I didn't like) are going to get all horny and the next thing you know Thumper "The Mighty" is going to have to suspend some foks (which the A_womon can ill-afford). :-)

My dictionary does not say that "nigger" is derived from the word "niggardly." It says it is a derivative of the word negro - which is an alteration of earlier neger, from Middle French negre, from Spanish or Portuguese negro, from Latin niger, all meaning "black."
The word negro when applied to African American slaves undoubtedly evolved into "nigra" and finally ended up being "nigger."
(Just in case you're wondering, consulting the dictionary is part of the book-reading project which is prompting me to cut back on posting. LOL)

Cyn you say potato.... No doubt you use the online miriam webster... here is encyclopedia's version of what I said...

The adverb form niggardly was formed in the sixteenth century from niggard, the name for a miser or stingy person. In the Wycliffe Bible of
1384

No doubt there are many modern as well as old versions of where the white people derived the word they chose to use as a slur? there are many versions to this story about the origin of the word..

So, a_womon, what does your encyclopedia say about the origin of the word "nigger?" Was the word "niggardly" mentioned in the definition? BTW, this particular aspect of the subject is not repetitive, and it's one that I'm keen about because I'm very interested in etymology.

it began as a neutral description and remained so in "dignified argumentation" of the 1700s. By the early 19th century, however, Hosea Easton, author of an 1837 treatise on black Americans, recognized it as "an opprobrious term, employed to impose contempt upon (blacks) as an inferior race."

No cyn, the definition didn't include the word niggard, but neither did it cite any of the words or origins that you used.

I thought this might be interesting reading for some. These are exerpts from "Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word" by Randall Kennedy

But if the N-word "represented only an insulting slur," Kennedy says, he wouldn't have written the book. Instead, he finds the word fascinating precisely because of its protean quality.

To establish that, he catalogs the word's ability to imply solidarity and shared experience. When the word is "used by black people among themselves," he observes, quoting Clarence Major, "(it) is a racial term with undertones of warmth and good will — reflecting ... a tragicomic sensibility that is aware of black history." Claude Brown thought it "perhaps the most soulful word in the world," and journalist Jarvis DeBerry found it "beautiful in its multiplicity of meanings." The N-word, Kennedy contends, "can bring forth bitter tears in certain circumstances" but "prompt joyful laughter in others."
How, then, should we view it, given the word's mixed messages? Kennedy divides people into different camps. Eradicationists seek "to drive nigger out of rap, comedy and all other categories of entertainment even when (perhaps especially when) blacks themselves are the ones using the N-word. They see this usage as bestowing legitimacy on nigger and misleading those whites who have little direct interaction with African-Americans. Eradicationists also maintain that blacks' use of nigger is symptomatic of racial self-hatred or the internalization of white racism, thus the rhetorical equivalent of black-on-black crime."

Anti-eradicationists, by contrast, use the word "not in subjection to racial subordination but in defiance of it." For them, to "proclaim oneself a nigger is to identify oneself as real, authentic, uncut, unassimilated and unassimilable — the opposite, in short, of a Negro, someone whose rejection of nigger is seen as part of an effort to blend into the white mainstream. Sprinkling one's language with niggers is thus a way to 'keep it real.'

A womon

I know too well that the world is full of the 'a womon' energy. When it is disciplined and focused, it is gentle and magnetic. When it is unreconciled and restless, it is needy and combative. Ultimately, your energy/principle teaches me how to develop my patience, self-control and when to guard my own energy. For that and that alone, thank you.
Being passionate about what you believe in is a beautiful, beautiful thing. However, volatile expressions of unwarranted, untamed emotion, sarcarsm and ignorant accusations of anothers character only tell stories about ones own heart, mind and soul.

Much respect!

Abm

For me, the "n" bomb just does something to me on the inside. I did say at the end of my post, "But really, to each their own." Obviously, people will follow their hearts and live unto themselves. I understand the point about not giving it power. It is a good point. However, I have always felt that words were powerful, even as a child. I associate it with the spirit of death. Personal I guess.
I get what you're saying about all the other words, which is an extremely valid point! I don't like coon either. However, the other ones I haven't given much thought to. I think that is pretty individual based on the circles one runs in and how comfortable they are using words like that. "Boy" --that is circumstantial.

Peace :-)

Now moonsigns if you can just manage to look in the mirror and say that to yourself....

I don't understand why you think that you can speak your opinion how you like, but think I need to censor myself on how I express my opinion? You seem more than ready express your "heavenly" self in a "devilish" manner when the mood strikes or you don't agree with what I have said so don't try to don your holy longsuffering cloak now.

And besides using spin, you just HAVE to keep TRYING to pyschoanalyze me. Why? your miscarachacterazations are becoming (Yawn) boring.... Listen, you don't have to wax philosophical so often, I'm sure those who do, will still find you quite enthralling without that.

but checkit: I ain't mad at you moonsigns, do you and let me do me and we will be cool. Just express yourself in any way you see fit, and show me how "much respect" you have by allowing me to do the same. It aint personal it's just my opinion.

I'm familiar with Randall's Kennedy's book. But to me, "nigger" is a 2-syllabel utterance; an individual perception, - an organic entity that inhabits one's psyche and is as much a part of one's identity as the thumb print which makes one person different from another.

This whole Moonsigns/A_woman thing was getting pretty good, but now its starting to wind down. Y'all need to pick up the pace a wee bit. Hell, I went to make me a bowl of popcorn and came back now y'all damn near married! I hope y'all never see eye-to-eye so I can keep gettin' off on the intellectual bloodshed up in here. Folks up in here spinning and waxing philosophical, lunin' and moonin' out. I could barely keep up for awhile there. Neek-neek flossin' in and out with her 2-syllabel utterances and stuff. Y'all niggas is somethin else...Ooops! Did I just drop the "N-bomb"? Give me a break! N-i-g-g-e-r! It's just a freakin' word! We are giving this word way too much credit! White folks use it to get under our skin. We just a bunch of dumba$$, country niggas to let them continue to get away with it. Some of you get more angry when a cracker call you nigga then if he was to roll up in ya crib and rob yo' country-a$$ blind! How bout if he rape ya' sista? 'Oh! that's okay! Help yaself. Just don't call me nigga!'. Pulleeze! What old show used to come on TV where somebody would get all upset every week cause somebody said "Boy"? "Don't say 'boy'. That's a white racist word." How about cracker! Peckerhead. Redneck. Honky. American. Yeah. I remember back in the early eighties, we used to call crackers 'americans'. Who gives a $hit! They are all just words. They carry as much power as you allow them to carry.

Moonsigns,

To be fair to you (especially since you appear to have been cast adrift by those who sympathize with you on this issue), I am not asserting that words have power and meaning. Of course they do. As I have said before, I think you would find that almost every great deed, be it ennobled or evil, has been preceed by some utterance, some word. Thus, I too would likely curb the usage of n-word (and any other words that have more provocative connotations) to the style/depth of the relationship I share with my respective company.

Still, I don't think that any word demand some singularly untouchable status, no matter its etimology.

And from a broader perspective: As one who value/appreciate communication/discourse of any sort, I am inherently bothered by any notion of censorship, even if what is being exchanged offends me. For example, I would must rather hear/read of the true, unvarnished plottings of the Klan in my local newspaper than allow them to quitely go about their malevolent machinations. Because at least I may know what kind of 'Hell' is coming my way.

A_womon,

Considering what you have asserted, this would appear to be fair/relevant question of you (I believe Troy attempted to go here.): How would you answer to my referring to you as my down-@$$-b@#$%? Please explain what/why of your response?

Abm

Amazingly, I don't believe in censorship either (at least in most situations). Everyone is entitled to share their opinion. However, I'm very aware that I may seem a bit extreme/different in that I am very sensitive, and always have been, to the energy/spirit in which it is done (communication/discourse). War and peace depends on the energies and spirit that we choose to be in tune with. We all know that they world is full of a "war" energy and many folks, both consciously and unconsciously, prescribe to it.

So yes, let people say what they want and in any manner in which they choose. It is either life or death to the soul and we must be willingly to be accountable no matter which path we choose. When all is said and done, I desire peace above all else. I am human, too --constantly learning and evolving. If I don't tame my tongue I will only be a part of the destruction that saddens, sickens, confuses, and angers me. Hence, my silence right now is important --and for no one else but myself.

btw, I have enjoyed my time here thus far :-)

Much respect!

A_womon,

HAHA!

You are right. Lambd and I have being a bit sophomoric. I attribute my post-pubescence silliness to be due in part to being the father of 2 very popular/talkative girls with whom I spend a lot of time. I enjoy dearly spending time with them. But sometimes, I think they have wielded me into to becoming more fluent with the youthful mindset/lingo than suits my own good.

And I recall that Lambd is a teacher. So I imagine he has been similarly influenced.

Lambd,

HAHA!

Dude, honestly, I am beginning to think we should start writing comedy routines for Dave Chappel together. Seriously. Cuz you remind of myself...'cept you are, like, MUCH worse.

(BTW: Can you believe that n@&&@# Chappel scored a $37M deal on a BASIC Cable TV program...DAYUM!)

Lambd,

The Mistress of the Realm is back. Time to take your weekly spanking (Oh, you know you love it!).

And I hope your ni&&le-piercings have healed already.

Cynique,

Aight then. Don't consider me to be your pimp. Consider me instead to be your 'agent', not your pimp ('poTAYto, poTAHto').

Yeah, I'll be your 'agent', who takes 80% of your earnings, drives around in a tricked out Hummer while you drive a hoopty and get to tap dat b-hind when yo' @$$ step outtah line or yu don't make my money right.

Lambd,
Shiiish! If we are REAL quiet, maybe the Almighty One won't notice what we've been doin'.

Moonsigns says: "Abm and Lambd...The both of you are too much!"
ABM says: We know. But you are a big girl. You can handle it.

Cynique says: "When you recover from your jungle fever, Lambd, you can check out my oasis if you want to beat the heat."
ABM says: See Lambd, I told you. All you have to do is toss out that trusty chestnut about a brothah wantin' to knock boots with White chicks and suddenly the sistahs get REAL 'agreeable'.

Cynique says: "She who travels swiftest, travels alone."
ABM says: Yeah. But if "she" gon' ride with me, "a @#$%^ bettah have my money!"

Moonsigns,

Since you say you are white and from all that you have said about your "partner" occasionally calling his friends nigga, among other things I assume that he is black, since you have said that you find other white people who use this word disgusting. So I gather that your argument about not using the word because you "honor" my ancestors struggle for equality is just a circumstantial one, one used as I said before, to try to "win" an argument, since you clearly don't "honor" the fact that they were slaughtered by the thousands for looking, sexing, or otherwise engaging(or white men/women falsely accusing them of such) those like you, many more times than for being called out of thier names. Or maybe you feel it is ok for you to bestow your honor selectively? And please don't say this is "off topic" as you so often accuse others of, you are the one who brought this up.

It is also quite clear why you are such a proponent of fevers of the jungle type.

A_womon,

Is Moonsigns (allegedly) being White the real source of your ongoing quarrel with her? And does (and should) her not being Black disqualify her from being permitted to engage in valid and meaningful discusssions here?

ABM: Come on! There you go... I ain't said nothin about moonsigns not being able to post just cause she's white! Damn. But I ain't going to let her sound off on me about my views being circumstantial, and then she displays a blaring circumstantial argument about honoring our forefathers because of what they died for and then ignoring another aspect of what they were slaughtered for! YES Im calling her on it, so would you be so kind as to let her answer/or not answer for herself? Thank you.

A_womon,

You have misinterpreted my question. I did not accuse you of wanting to prohibit her from posting all together, Rather, I asked whether Moonsigns alleged race "disqualify her from being permitted to engage in valid and meaningful discussions here?" To me, the operative words here are "valid and meaningful".

Because I find that too often we Blacks (& certainly Whites as well) enjoy what others have to say about race right up to the point in which others disagree with us. Then, if we enjoy some advantage in the dialog (e.g., this site is dedicated to African American literature/concepts), we use such leverage to discount/disparage those differing views.

Simply, I would prefer that we not be hypocritically guilty of a sin that we have for ages accused others of.

But I concede if that is NOT what do, then what I have offered does not apply.

Perhaps, as you accuse, Moonsigns is selectively indulging and/or skirting certain issues of race (though, I suspect we are ALL from time-2-time guilty of such). But maybe the most clear and effective way for you to engage her/others on "another aspect of what [Black men] were slaughtered for" would be to create a separate new/separate Topic for discussion.

Lambd,

You gottah love the energy of these young sistahs like A_womon, don't you? There young girls cause parts of me to flare up like nobody's biznaz.

Look at chu trynah jack-it-up in hur! See. Dat's why C-note is throwin' you overboard for a cheesy fake-wannabe actor/poet.

But the issue of Moonsigns race causes me to reconsider something we discussed before: Notice our lunar fem never answered the question of the tint of her glutes. Maybe she thought it would scare us Brothers off.

Well, if that's the case, Moonsigns, don't let that preempt you. Cuz I have seen'm all.

Dat Cpt. Kirk was a scrate-up FREAK, wasn't he? Dude didn't turn down nuthin' but his (funky) bed covers. Hehe!

Yeah, I caught that thing wit Moonie awhile back. That's why asked if it was round. Cuz that thing could be about as pale as a three-gallon bucket (did you see what I did there? pale/bucket?) If could be as pale as a three gallon bucket, but as long as its round its good to go. See, brothers are stuck on the curve way more than the color, Moonbounce.

A womon

You have an absolutely valid question that has an extremely simple answer. I could answer it.

A womon wrote:

I will be very forward and quick. You have obvious prejudices and your comments in this thread, as well as others prove just that. You choose to be consumed or reconciled --both of which are not my choice. However, it is my choice as to whether or not I engage myself in dialogue that I know is not productive or healthy for the both of us. Deep in your bleeding heart, you know this as well. I'm way too old and far too wise to entertain a war of words --been there, done that. I have no available energy for pretending you sincerely want an answer, when what you really want is a release for your anger. I have an answer, but don't want to play games. Think whatever you want and say whatever you must, but know this, I'm not the one.

btw, I truly hope you find peace. Imbalance and unrest in even one area of your life will destroy other areas. Trust me, as a woman, I know.

Much respect!

Lambd,

I agree, the shade matters less than the shape. But a playah should know that all sensory elements touch, hearing, taste, smell and sight culminate into what make 'fruit'...'juicy'.

My 'experience' with 'such' have revealed varying tints of the primary color 'red'. I have 'observed' every shade from subtle blushes of pink lemonade, to a blossuming strawberry, to a newly rippening cherry and even a maturing plumb.

I hope you find a similar 'variety' in your sampling of 'produce'. <wink!>

Moonsigns said:
But know this: I aint the one:
Well guess what playah WE aint the two!!!

Now digest that one.
You can call me prejudice or whatever but I recognize it for what it is...a smokescreen to avoid answering a direct question with a direct answer

And I have not made it a secret as you so astutely have been able to garner from my plain english, I loathe black men who choose white women as thier mates!! and any man that wants to get with me better have NEVer been with one. Is that plain enough for you???
And YES it is for the also very plain reasons that I stated: Your murdering ancestors in their rush to keep their delusional arrogant asses superior in their own minds murdered many innocent men and very young boys (the youngest I heard of was aged 10!) over some mythically fabulous and untouchable P****!
And so I find it pathetic that some black men choose to forget that fact! I could puke eveytime I see it! so if you didn't know now you KNOW!

You aint the one. Hah! If you can bring it, you better be able to take it! How bout that?

She may be Black or Latino or Asian or mixed, we don't know. I really don't care, as long as she aint a man like Yukio turned out to be! Just flat out ask her a yes or no question if you need to know, otherwise stop brow beatin' that white bi---! Kiddin', just kidding. It was a joke. You really should lay off and stop trying to blame her for all the cruddy, low-down, shiftless, bull$)i+ her ancestors did to our good god-fearing people.

Moonie--don't worry about a thang. We aint gonna let her beat you down or nothin'. We love A_woman, but she gonna be the epitome of black female class and sophistication or not at all. Hey woman! You hear that. Class and sophistication! That's all we standing for up in this piece!

A_womon,

I feel part of where you are coming from. But I think you may want to reconsider part of your value system. Because if your will only roll with a brothah who has never off-loaded into a White chick, you are in for some 'slim pickin's'. I know allot of cats from places all over the country. And EVERYONE has at some point "went there".

Honestly, if a brothahs got anything going for him he's probably at some point had to use a Louisville Slugger to beat White freaks off'em.

ABM,

I asked this question: now I aint going back and reading so this is the gist of it.

If Moonsigns was so passionate about in her own words not liking the word "nigga" because she was honoring the fact that my ancestors died/shed blood for being called that,(nigger) I asked her why she was not honoring the fact that many more of my ancestors were murdered over white women screaming bloody murder(or white men pretending that a white woman was) every time a black man looked their way.

now, she don't know me from eve, but she chose to answer as a lot of white people do when asked a direct question regarding something they have said regarding issues of race: "you are just an angry prejudice black(man woman) who wants to vent on me cuz of what my ancestors did"

well my thang is so long as moonsigns was comfortable discussing this theme, it was fine, but when I touch on something that makes her uncomfortable, then she start screaming I'm prejudiced! PUHLEEZE. I'm prejudiced when I want to honor my ancestors, but she's spewing positive energy and all peaceful and light when she wants to honor them. Gimme a break....

Do you prescribe the same prohibitions on sistahs dating/marrying White men?

Have (or would) YOU ever date/sex a White dude?

A_womon,

I agree that a lot of White people softpedal race issues. That, when issues of the past are brought up, often they attempt to conveniently forget what happen before and their influences on the present.

I also understand and appreciate how/why you feel as you do about brothahs and White women. But hate and resentment can not remedy our situation. Those feelings only burn a lot of energy and distract us from inviting a myriad blessings into our lives. As Marvin said, "...only love can conquer hate."

Moonsigns,

I understand how you feel. But, out of respect for A_womon, and a MYRIAD Black women who feels as she does, I believe you should attempt to answer the questions/issues she asks. Otherwise, you may prove that you are indeed what she accuses you of being.

Good Grief! Your hostility is palpable, a_womon. Talk about the generation gap! I think that is the reason I am able to relate more to Moonsigns than you. It has nothing to do with race. It has something to do with mellowing with age. Anyway, one of the reasons, I inject my little Viggo messages whenever this subject comes up is to call attention to the fact that this jungle fever thing can work both ways. Black men feel no loyalty toward black women, so why should black women limit their options?

I got plenty of loyalty...to the booty.

I got no problem with black women that want to screw around like whores with the white man...so long a she don't bring her disease ridden, race mixing ass around me once she's been contaminated by that dog-rat-pig combination of a subspecies.

Abm

I think you have a cool vibe/energy Abm and will answer this --for you though. I know you want to know.

"Nature reveals a superior intelligence which makes the systematic thinking and actions of humans seem totally insignificant." -Anonyomous

There is life force/love force and death force/hate force energy in the world. We have the choice as to what energy we choose to live by.
The physical nature of human beings shows us that superior intelligence created us to procreate, regardless of race. Man and woman were birthed from the infinite source of life out of love, therefore, together, we continue life --with the ability to choose our source of energy.

Some humans pervert the Creators will. This has happened and continues to happnen. The death that follows this disobedience, be it physical or spiritual, is only symptomatic of the hate --though never a true reflection of the Creators true will and purpose for Creation.
The "n" bomb was birthed in hate and brought with it death. Crimes revolving around the "n" bomb are only symptomatic of the hate. Hence, I choose not to speak death and continue the cycle of hate. White women aren't and have never been the problem, hate has.

Man + Woman = LIFE and life is the Creators will

I believe in honoring the life force and love force in the world --the force that we were created to have and share!

ABM,

What a crock of shi*!
Im glad that your dear sometimes sensitive/and sometimes psuedo clairvoyant moonsigns unloaded that esoteric load of horse manure on you, cause she's right, I aint tryna hear that psuedo religous bullshite! it galls me the way some people cloak themselves in religiosity and turn on their "viberators" when it suits their argument. Excuse me while I earl..

and she STILL danced around my direct question, however since she addressed it to your "coolness" hahaha! she doesn't have to does she?

and aint it funny how she blasted onto this board all indignant about someone talking about black women's booty but wasn't at all concerned about the comments about white women's booty on another thread, or yours and lambd comments about hers? I can't stand fake azz people, I don't care what color they are.

Lambd hahahaha!! Here you go! That's a reoccurring theme around here, aint it? Just cuz I paid attention in school and I can articulate plainly my point of veiw and my vocabulary contains more words that most of you expect from a hip hopper (which,by the way is a sad commentary!)I can't be the age I am? I have heard that said about Yukio and others as well. I am bilingual, I fluently speak, ebonics, hip-hop, and the kang's anglish!!! hahaha!!!

And by the way, as for YOUR age, lambd, I have often wondered if you are REALLY in your 40's or are you just trynna be down with ABM and them? I think you are really younger than you admit to.

The poem about black womens booty is a direct comparison to white women --saying one is better than the other, hence, their physical beauty is ultimately better --which is not true in all cases. No group of women has a monopoly on beauty and stunning physical attributes. Futhermore, when something is just beautiful, it just is. Not at the expense that something else isn't. Mature women, women who are spiritually and mentally whole, regardless of race, understand this.

The 'butt seriously' article used a comparison in expressing her experience, but not saying one is better than the other. Her motive wasn't to esteem one over the other in order to get men, or feel desirable by a man (or group of men). There is a major, major difference in the tone and point of the two pieces. Only a foolish mentality would argue otherwise.

My repsonse to lambd and Abm was only confirming what they already knew --no deatil, no comparisons. It is what it is and there is nothing wrong or fake about that -however, I haven't, and never have, gone into detailed info about my physical attributes --and never will. It's irrelevant.

You are correct. I didn't post my response to you and for obvious reasons. Abm's logic is deserving of a response. He may not always agree with me, however, he doesn't blow up and lose self-control upon reading my opinion. There are other rational minds here as well. You however, have a prejudice and biased view and don't care. Hate is undeserving of my energy. Remember, I'm the kind of women, that if I were with my black husband on the street, you'd "puke" (your words) if you saw us. There is no point in continuing to let me know how angry you are when nothing will come of the conversation.

I know you will continue to prove me right.

The foundation of everything in the world has an energy. It is those who are the most out of touch with this truth who will quickly disregard it. If you're really your own woman, the strong woman you present, it would reflect in your nature by caring more about what energy you are in tune with and what energy you share so freely. You admit your hate and don't care. You are obviously, somewhere in your being, disconnected. You subscribe to the energy nonsense more than you think.

I know you are proud, but if you care about yourself do a search on a woman named Queen Afua. She is remarkable. I respect her. The principles she lives by can help you heal. I know you hate me, however, I care about all women. Live consciously --you are worth it!

Much respect!

A_womon,

What follows is in response to your "August 14, 2004 - 11:36 pm" post.

Why are you rippin' on me before even givin' me an opportunity to respond to Moonsigns' response to my request? Is that wise and fair thing to do?

To be honest, I agree with the essence of both of you are saying. Like Moonsigns, I believe you allow your anger/resentment to get the better of you. And like you, I think Moonsigns is use some trite "new age" spiel to shirk and obfuscate the issue you have tried to present. Thus, I would ask that YOU present your viewpoint more calmly and ask Moonsigns to not conveniently use your ire to blur the real issue (and incur the favor of others in this discussion) and to directly address your questions/comments.

Because I do think you are trying to make a valid and important point. But, sweetheart, at least give yourself an opportunity to make it.

My wife mentioned to me lastnite that she has observed increasing incidents of sistahs coupled-up with White dudes. She claims they are "all over the place". I usually don't notice who's with whom when I am out/about. But she's more observant than I am. So I'll take her word for it.

If what my wife says is true, should Brothahs be as upset about that as you are about reverse?

I wasn't rippin you, I only addressed my response to you cuz I wasn't "deserving"*LOL* of a direct answer from the high and mighty moonsigns.

anyway, I wish I would've NEVER said my age. Im sure that will be held against me in the long run around here....

as far as me being angry... why do yall always think that when I post?? I have heard that soooooo many times, except from justwrite who gets it. I miss her. Most of the time, I aint even phased by what I post and Im far from angry most of the time, that's just yalls opinion I guess.
It's like Yukio said, no one can know who anyone is on a board, it is about OPINIONS and nothing else should matter. who can get the full picture of someones age by what they write? HOW can you? As I said, Lambd sounds really young sometimes, but if he says he's 40 who am I to judge?

and how many times do I have to restate my question abm??? it is obvious to me she aint gone answer and at this point, I don't give a damn.

Moonsigns,

What do you think what the purpose of the 'butt seriously' article? I am not sure, but I think the author's intentions were a bit self-serving. Although she was trying to appear coy and self-deprecating, I interpreted her intentions as follows: "See. White girls can have nice phat behinds too. So come and get it (Black) men."

A_womon,

I apologize for misreading your response. Although it was intended for me, I can see that the spirit of it was aimed at Moonsigns

Do not decry your age. Actually, that's is part of why I enjoy corresponding with you. I think people my age and older (See Cynique...ha!) should listen to and appreciate what you think, say and feel. I don't think that Lambd should have made an issue of it as that doesn't discount the veracity of your words/thoughts.

We all interpret certain word/expressions to mean certain things. Perhap we are to a degree misjudging you. And I wager it is at least in part generational.

But might I suggest to the following: Learn to change the tempo of how you express yourself when you disagree. Because if your opponent immediately reads you are angry, they will use that to more easily avoid engaging the truthfulness of what you say.

But I agree it appears Moonsigns will not provide you with an answer, at least in the manner/style you desire.

We sure got some characters on this site, whew!

Abm: You ought to know by now that I don't care how old anybody on this site is. I just make conversation, stir up trouble, and play the devil's advocate...(kind of sounds like some slimy, un-named, three-lettered creature we all know and love. Hmmm, now who could that be?)

Usually, I don't post anything until it starts slowing down, then I try to jumpstart the threatrics in here. (Usually, my girl A_woman don't need a charge. I think she wakes up charged up. All of that twenty-three year old energy makes my shorts swell. Not for long tho. Hell, I am forty after all.)

A_woman, me saying you are older is wishful thinking on my part. You see I have these fantasies about the women here and I know I can't keep up with you. If I convince myself that you are older than you claim, then I have a fighting chance in my fantasy...Comprende?

Dude. You gottah be careful. Cuz chicks get all #itchy when the subject of age is broached. Their eyes/heads start rolling, fingers wagging, lips pursing, etc. After all dat, a brothah can hardly get a word in edgewise.

But I hear you, fellow instigator. I try to keep the party going too. And yeah, A_womon needs a "jumpstart" about as much as you need a reason to achieve a 10-second erection.

Perhaps you should leave the energetic A_womon to a brothah who's gears are less likely to downshift just as the race has begun.

Moonsigns, I'm very much on your wave length. I'm into all of the meta-physical concepts you speak about. Anger and hate are negative energies that the deplete the spirit. A-womon reminds me of the Tasmanian devil of road-runner fame; she is always in attack mode, alway a time-bomb ready to explode. The more placid you become the more volatile she becomes. What's wrong with this picture? But she is not unique. She is like many young black women. How do I know this? I have been told this by many young black men...
OK, a-womon. Bring it on.

When you mentioned something about the moon, I knew we were kindred!
I meet women like this in everyday life. When all is said and done, they only hurt themselves. When we are young (generally) we all have a cause and feel the need to fight it to it's death. Usually, the experience and wisdom that come with age make one realize that the world is bigger than their experience. Frustration that stems from always having to be right, or always needing to be heard --and to be loud, stems from personal issues and immaturity. While I respect others opinions, my life won't be dictated by them. My energy is sacred. Futhermore, fighting over men, or a man, is pointless. They are like buses, a new one comes every 2o mintues. I have more self-respect, self-esteem and integrity to scrap over what a man/men want(s) and what a man/men don't want(s). I'll be back later to chat :-)

much respect

About the "butt" essay, we have compeltely different interpretations. Here are my reasons. First of all, I felt as if the essay was to prove how fads come and go --how her 'tail' will proably be out of style soon. However, it has always been with her and her beauty is not appreciated until it has become a fad. For once, especially around other whites, she doesn't have to hide what they have considered 'too big'. Second, remember how you said that interracial dating is way overblown, I totally agree. The average white female isn't saying, "Look at my nice a$$, come get me black men." She isn't looking to "swirl" (as you say, lol). The average white female loves, loves to be thin (the average white man loves it too). My theory comes from personal experience, as well as dealing with other white women my entire life --"You can never be too rich or too thin" --I've heard it all my life.

Moonsigns,

Of course you know infinitely more about being a White woman than do I. Still, I see the subtle intent of that article to be to allow White women to get in the element of the beauty game that once was reserved solely for Black and (certain)Hispanic women. Because the ascendent/universal popularity of hip-hop, J. Lo, butthuggers, lowriding jeans, etc. prove that having a phat bootay is becoming just as important to White girls.

And you will never convince me that there are not a lot of White girls (& Hispanic/Asian for that matter) who at some point are looking to discover if "whether what 'they' say about Black men is true." I and almost every brothah I know can personally vouch for that.

To me, we are seeing time unravel the truth. Non-white women are being brought to the forefront and their beauty/style is finally being celebrated, as well as the acknowledgement that not every white woman has a flat a$$. Simply put, people are beginning to realize that NO group of women has a monopoly on beauty/style and knock-out, physical attributes. All women, in some kind of way, need to be liberated as far as their beauty and concept of self is concerned. This has always been divine will. But can we really handle it? That is the question.

about the essay
Our interpretation of what she might be trying to convey is limited to our gender, race and experience --which is so completely different. I have no doubt that some black men have been approached by the "curious type", it's inevitable. There are freaks in every race. Some date interacially, however, a majority date/marry within their own race and only seek partners of their own race. What do we say about them?

I feel that a large majority of this nonsense arises from the stereotypes and myths --the hype of it all. People disregard that this is a natural, human phenomenon -being curious about the opposite sex and what they 'have' (being the nicest way I can put it). This natural curiousity has been perverted by man/humankind and once again, race is made into something it is not. Again, NO group of men have a monopoly on knock-out, physical attributes. Sorry, I know that may hurt some men's egos, but it's true. If people are really the indivduals they say they are, this theory on human sexuality would ring true for them. It's funny, people don't want stereotypes to applyto them, yet, box other people quickly. Funny stuff! It's hypocritical.

Men and women, regardless of race, for the most part, continue to exclusively seek/date/marry people within their own race. Just as the average black man seeks black women, the average white woman seeks white men. I feel quite safe to say that the average white female won't 'test those waters'.
In general, I think men (doesn't matter the race) are more open to the concept of interracial romance. Maybe it is something related to gender. Just my thoughts.

All of you men commenting on the subject might consider how this all relates to the mystique of women being women. The female species is fraught with subtle competition. Females no matter what race, are constantly checking each other out, alternately admiring and rejecting something about each other's appearances, liking one thing and disliking the something else. Women steal each other's tricks, modifying features, emulating demeanors, enhancing assets, incorporating all of these adjustments into their own personal style, doing all of this in their eternal struggle to not only attract the male of the species but to inpsire the envy of their female peers. Beyonce's long blond hair is an example of this, as is any white woman who gets her butt enhanced or any Asian who has has her eyes made less slanted. Women of all ethnicity are striving to achieve that paragon that the culture in which they live has elevated to the status of being the most appealing. And currently this paragon has become an increasing multi-racial look. Vanity, thy name is woman!

cynique: but even with the "multi-racial" look there is still a hierarachy...and the african american is at the bottom. In the fashion world, at least, there is a hierarchy among the exotic...and the ethiopian and the extremely black skinned is vying for supremacy...american blacks women, on the other hand, are ol' hat...

also, white women have always had round butts, but they hid dem because it was a cultural no-no...this doesn't mean, of course, that all women are shaped the same, but u will find asian women w/booties, black women with wide flat asses, etc...

Moonsigns,

I am all about holding hands and singing Kum Bi Yah with phat-booty White chicks. But reality requires that I view this subject differently. Because the truth remains the real world still extols the virtues/charms of White women above any/all others. And women of color indelibly suffer from that.

All over the world, Black women are expending all of their energies/home/heart to affect some semblance of Western beauty. Black American females spend 4X all others for consumable beauty products. All over the world, Black females routinely use harmful (in some case carcinogenic) product to straighten their hair, lighten their skin, etc.

And where are the White women decrying the enormous toll that is especially reaped Black women?

Yet, as soon as Black women begin to get some (imminently due) acclaim for uniquely natural elements of their beauty, suddenly White woman all over want to jump outtah the butt closet. Seeing that, especially within the context of the changing cultural zeitgeist causes me to read more deeply into the article. The whole thing to me smacks of an insincere and convenient bit of 'sisterhood' on the part of some White women.

Who do you mean by "can we really handle it?"? Because the truth is Black women (and others) have been made to "handle it" for centuries. They have, in spite of relentless efforts to the contrary manage to garner some sense of self-worth and appreciation. I was raised by, am married to and am raising Black women. I see the propagandistic crap they endure. Frankly, few White women can hardly imagine what Black women have been made to "handle".

The sistahs, more than anyone else it seems, can survive and thrive in almost any situation. This has been proven for over 500 years. The real question is can White women "handle" perhaps being made to ‘compete’ on a more equal playing field? That is what I think might be more in doubt.

In truth, White women can often quite conveniently dart in-n-out the lives of pseudo-faithful relationships with Blacks and leave havoc in their wake. Example: EVERYBODY knows that the biggest beneficiaries of Affirmative Action have been White women. Yet you never see/hear ANY of them acknowledge that. They ‘got’ while the getting was good, then have largely bailed on Blacks who continue to struggle to get even the most modest share of the American pie.

Often, White women will go with their group when it is to achieve one advantage then exclaim individualism to claim another.

Moreover, they have been rarely if ever made to suffer as harshly for crossing the racial divide as Blacks. And as long as this unbalanced condition exist, there will continue to exist many Black who will rightful remain suspicious of White women.

And I have never felt the desire/need to get into a d@#$-measuring contest with White guys (What you say, A_womon, that would be no-contest...hehe!). But frankly, all of the hyperbole and hysterical about the alleged enormous sexual prowess of Black men has been promulgated by Whites who have been intimidated and/or enraptured by things real and imagined.

So, again, now that Black people perhaps 1/2 jokingly acknowledge the (admittedly oft-fallacious) merits of those sexual legends, you would have us assert some 'phallus equality' to everyone else? Again, how convenient.

I dig the essence of where you are coming from. And if/when this world truly acknowledges the value of all of its people, regardless of hue, hair and body, I will be among the first to toast and sing aloud in harmony.

But frankly, most of what you exclaimed here would be much more effectively applied among your own Caucasian fathers, mothers, kin and friends. Because as I review what you say, I can't help imagining someone who has been spotted 50 meters in a 100 meter having the audacity to demand that now a fair race be run.

Well, Abm, you pretty delievered the final word on this subject. The world abounds with good intentions and well-meaning people, but, sadly, that "ol debble" reality always sets in and reminds us that "it is what it is."

Abm

Your points are justified.
Once again, this comes down to life and death. The two underlying energies here are greed (in the form of capitalism) and lack of personal responsiblity.

GREED.......
White beauty has been, and continues to be the standard. I acknowledge that and think it is unfortunate, as well as unfair. Should White corporations/business owners take responsibility for catering to the needs of only one audience, one group of people? Absolutely! However, they are too greedy and irresponsible. It saddens me, but the average white person doesn't give a sh*t.

LACK OF PERSONAL RESPONSIBLITY.......
Now on the flip side, what are people doing to protest the images that are shoved down their throats? Like I said in an earlier post, Americans (western culture) and westernized countries love this garbage. We digest it, all these images, stereotypes and brainwashing and have the nerve to call it entertainment, often to the point of the death of our soul. This happens to non-blacks as well. It perpetuates a vicious cycle of hate, inequality, and injustice across the board. While I can blame Whites for doing this, this mindset also infects other races and they hate/kill for it too. If people want to be entertained by death, expect death to come. We can't call certain things fun and not take the responsiblity for how it makes us feel about ourselves and others.

You mentioned something about how black women use products that can hurt them. Can we blame Whites for the mass marketing of images? Sure. However, between the advertising of these illusions and slapp'in this sh*t on (carcinogenic products), who gave up their right to choose what they consider beautiful? Futhermore, I have seen through the lives of my offspring that blacks give one another a harder time regarding their looks than whites. I have heard and seen with my own eyes/ears the hurtful words that men and women alike will use in front of their own offspring regarding hair, skin and overall appearance. Blacks have indeed raised their own standards. I too, am raising young women, who in this world, will be considered black. I am extremely mindful of what I feed them spiritually. I am extremely mindful of what images they see and what entertains their time. I am extremely mindful of their walk, talk and dress. I am extremely mindful of what they eat, drink and the body products they use. I am extremely mindful of the company they keep and who they consider role models. This is choice!

You mentioned that black women can thrive and survive in any situation. True, but so does every other race of women. It is just the nature of the feminine principle.

About the point of the "butt" essay, we just disagree.

MOONSIGNS:
"Can we handle it?"

As Cynique mentioned, females, regardless of race, compete in subtle ways. IF the playing field were even, many women, all races included, wouldn't be able to handle it, period! It is the nature of the beast.

Your points about white women and affirmative action --I think in the beginning that white women definitely got ahead. However, nowadays, I feel it is the other way around --I feel that non-whites have the advantage. I look at it as a part of making the playing field even.

As far as blacks suffering "harshly" for crossing the racial divide --yes, back in the day. Nowadays, for the most part, when and if a black person gets grief for dating/marrying interracially, it is usually from other blacks. I understand that history and personal experience can play a part in how people develop their prejudices, however, based on that merit alone, we could all be justified in our suspicions and hate of entire racial groups.

You're right, the whites who enslaved blacks created these myths about black men out of fear. I agree. However, black men perpetuate it nowadays. If I had a dollar for everytime a black said some stupid thing about, "I know that you know what's up", or "You know the real deal", I'd be rich. I call them out on their stupidity. Sure abm, we can blame whites for starting it, however, these "sexual legends" are (1/2 jokingly, right?) now held in esteem by black men --almost like a badge of honor. I have always felt that men are men. I know from personal experience that these "legends" are bs. My shared thoughts aren't "convenient", just my feelings are the subject.

Abm, what I have to say can be applied to all people.

To all,
Is there inequality and injustice? Yes. Did the problems begin with me and will they end with me? No. Whites can be blamed for some things, however, not everything can be put at their feet with the expectation that it will be rectified. I can only live out my convictions in the best way possible and in the most honest way I can. I don't always succeed, but I strive! Science has shown us that people can't be seperated by race (genetics). In my heart, I know there is something grand to be said for that. Yet, we find ways to corrupt the simplicity and beauty of this simple message from the Divine. My point in sharing here has always been to convey the message that the essence of our humaness has the innate ability to transcend race. The principles of seed, time and harvest always reflect the true nature of the heart and soul. Be mindful and live consciously --future generations deserve our overall wholeness and wellness! Blessings to all!

Much respect!

abm: What will u do w/our lack of personal responsibility? Darn nabits...Shucks...both blacks and "non-blacks" are brainwashed. We are all victims, but with personal responsibility we shall overcome some daaaaaaaaaayyyyy! Ohhh deep in my heart...oops, sorry I was temporarily svengalied...don't watch the wheels...its spinnin nigga, its spinnin!

Moonsigns: The average white person doesn't give a sh*t...How do u know this?. I tend to agree w/u. I believe so because whites have the "convenience" of not thinking about blacks or even their own identity as whites since it is their image that have always been the standard?

For centuries, I have been a black man and u have been a woman.

Did u know this...if you are to understand abm,(please correct me if i'm wrong, abm)this must be "fully understood."

Moonsigns,

First, I am not out to "hate" or "blame" Whites. I am as much an advocate of self-actualization as you will ever meet. Hell. I wouldn’t be chatting with you here today were I anything but. Still, I feel justified in recognizing what has been done and the effect of such on Black people. And obscuring the issues amid a plethora of faultless, altruistic, new age delusions and psychobabble will not help us.

Thanks for helping to support my (& A_womon/Yukio’ and others) arguments. What you say in your GREED paragraph is profoundly true: "the average White person doesn’t give a sh*t." And it is indeed for THAT reason why Black foks must be especially mindful of efforts that THEY would appear to extend to the contrary.

I concede that Blacks have continued to perpetuate much of the onerously self-depreciating standards that have been imposed upon us. And we all must make individual and collective efforts to rebut and undo the propaganda that prevails both within our own selves and the society about us. But to accomplish this, we must create/control more of the nation/world’s media apparatus.

I agree that all women compete. But some are made to race on firm ground while others must tread in mud.

And, yes no one is immune to prejudice. We all often unfairly attribute negative/false qualities to that/those that differ from our own. But the difference is the EFFECT of such prejudice that can profoundly differ.

For example: Name one White man whose life is materially affected by the legend of the Black penis. Other than some transient slight to their (artificially inflated) ego, most White men sustain ZERO disadvantages here. Even if the legend was true, it means NOTHING. Really, a Black man repeating them have all of the substantive sociological effect of his telling "Yo Mama" jokes.

And other than sexual titillation and experimentation, how, if at all, are White women negatively influenced by tales of the Black phallus? Again, there is NONE.

See. White people are quick to use minor (mostly anecdotal) social phenomenon to say "See. Look: Black foks are prejudiced too." But they can never cite any MATERIAL effect of such prejudice. Why? Because the truth is there rarely if ever is such.

Moreover, do you know of many instances where Blacks have denied other Blacks jobs, housing, financing, healthcare, etc. because they’re married to Whites?

Do you know of many Blacks burning crosses or writing "Honkey Lover" on the lawns of other Blacks?

Do you know of any Blacks castrating other Blacks because they have White lovers?

The truth is, most Blacks who mate/marry Whites will still be accepted/loved by his Black friends/family. Their children will be embraced. And in most cases, even their spouses will be accepted. This is STILL often much less the case from the White side of the friends/family.

And what do you mean by suggesting that Affirmative Action has given non-whites some advantage? Again, WHAT advantage might THAT be? Because I defy you to cite ONE advantage that Blacks enjoy in this country save a diminutive number of hip-hop/R&B and sports performers (and even those industries are almost wholly owned/controlled by Whites).

I appreciate that you too are attempting to raise your daughters who "will be considered black" to be happy/productive children. Though, no matter what you do, I suspect they may (if they have not already) be confronted with myriad racial-tinged scenarios that your rearing simply can not prepare them for.

I’ve got to give you your’s. You ain’t acting like punk. Heck! With the heat you are being dealt lately, many White girls would have turned tail and run about now. :-)

abm: we need power. this is really the issue. as u argue.

As it concerns interacial dating...we need to get over it. if folk are in love, great. If it is jungle fever...f*ck em!

The article: just a white gurl familar with popular culture, whose had to cover up a bootie til recently. Now, she can show it proudly, and she's embracing her ability to do so and hopes to continue w/o the fear that it will go back out of style. So this is really about her desire to maintain present white standards, so that she can sustain her present liberties. This is not at all about a sisterhood w/black women. If it was, these white women would have showed the bootie years or centuries ago...and some have, but these women did not wholely accept the notion of the round bootie as being fat...what would be more interesting would be for an older white women to discuss her experiences w/ having a bootie and how it wasn't acceptable...another article could be written by white women with lips or a white women w/kinky hair...i'm sure there are stories out there...this is really about white people not us.

White women have always had a booties...though africans women are physiologically more endowed in the bootie area than white women...all groups have shapely women, however. Also, black men are more endowed than their white peers...hispanic men are second, white, and finally asians last...now, are their asians and white men w/huge penis, I'm sure(i haven't done this sort of research...sorr)...are their black men w/ smaller lil tiny weenie joints, Yes...but in terms of a group analysis...we got it locked...also consider that many hispanics are of african descent...so beyond the anecdotes, as a group we do have bigger jimmies...

What is the context of the white bootie fetish?

J-lo enabled this...she's more acceptable than a light-skinned sister, cuz she can play italians or spaniards(rarely a puerto rican)...and folk began to see that beautiful azz and were like whoa...so i believe it was an embrace of a paler person showcasing the bootie to a large mtv audience(both music videos and movies) and then of course britney spears has a bootie too...so once white women did this...the jeans were made to show the bootie and even sculpt the bottom for those who didn't have one, we saw more videos w/white women showing their goods, even lil azzless christina aguierla...in other words, black women's booties have been embraced as a byproduct of the white women's "booties" acceptance in the white mainstream culture. So black women aren't really accepted, but whoever showcases the power of the booty!

moonsigns: There is only one race--the human race. This is for clarification.

Abm

I have faithfully been with my husband for over 12 years. I have seen and heard it all. This is extremely mild compared to what I've experienced in everyday life. My personal experiences have given me the grace to mellow tremendously and adopt the philosphy I/we live by. Trust me, this isn't heat at all.

However, I might not be around too much longer. Though I have enjoyed my time here, I do step on some peoples feet who want to "keep it black" --that is cool and understandable. Everyone is an outsider somewhere --and there are many places to chill in cyberspace. I will be on my way soon enough.

I will respond to your post when I have more time.
btw, I'm a woman, not a girl.

Much respect!

Right?

But, okay, I guess this is the part where you pull a 'A_womon' on us all and scoot when the going gets tuff, huh?

Tsk. Tsk.

See. That's what I mean...don't want to face any "heat".

Oh, I guess I should have said "women"...not "girls", huh. Sorry.

Believe it or not, we have no beef, as far as I'm concerned. I was just trying to inform u, since u tended to use the term race like there was a such of thing as a black and white race.

you wrote:

If i've taken this out of context...my bad, but it does sound like you're saying that genetic differences between whites and blacks constitute racial differences. They do not. Again, thats my interpretation, but only u know what u mean....

Moonsigns, interracial discussions tend not to fare too well on this board because white participants invariably end up coming across as somewhat naive. Race does matter. A color-blind society is an illusion. That's just the way it is. We are not all the same under our skins. We are the sum total of our life experiences and being black America is not something a white person can educate anyone about. To empathize with us is presumptuous; to sympathize with us is patronizing. But don't go. Other issues besides race are explored here. I'm always up for a good discussion about such things as energizing images into reality with the power of positive thinking. Together we could conjure up Viggo and gaze into his hypnotic eyes, and then laugh at all the snide remarks that the essences of his presence would inspire. Seriously, like a-womon, you have to do what you feel most comfortable doing. It's been fun kidding around with you. I think you are a nice lady.

Yukio,

How and by what standard do you define "race". Because my Merriam-Webster asserts there are indeed different racial classifications.

Cynique,

That is a most excellent explanation of how discussion on race usually go between Blacks and Whites.

abm: race is a social contructed....u must have read this comment from me before...if my memory serves me correctly, u even participated in a discussion when troy introduced the topic. There is no scientific evidence prove that phenotype or other physiological or genetic differences among socalled blacks, whites, asians, constitute actual racial differences.

Also, U must know, there is often a gap between socalled "academic" knowledge and the information within our dictionaries and encyclopedias.

At any rate, check this website: http://www.pbs.org/race/000_General/000_00-Home.htm

HUMAN DIVERSITY - GO DEEPER

There is not one gene, trait, or characteristic that distinguishes all members of one race from all members of another. We can map any number of traits and none would match our idea of race. This is because modern humans haven't been around long enough to evolve into different subspecies and we've always moved, mated, and mixed our genes. Beneath the skin, we are one of the most genetically similar of all species.

Lots of animals are divided into subspecies. Why doesn't it make sense to group humans the same way?

Subspecies are animal groups that are related, can interbreed, and yet have characteristics that make them distinct from one another. Two basic ingredients are critical to the development of separate subspecies: isolation and time. Unlike most animals, humans are a relatively young species and we are extremely mobile, so we simply haven't evolved into different subspecies.

The earliest hominids evolved from apes about 5 million years ago, but modern humans (Homo sapien sapiens) didn't emerge until 150,000-200,000 years ago in eastern Africa, where we spent most of our evolution together as a species. Our species first left Africa only about 50,000-100,000 years ago and quickly spread across the entire world. All of us are descended from these recent African ancestors.

Many other animal species have been around much longer or they have shorter life spans, so they've had many more opportunities to accumulate genetic variants. Penguins, for example, have twice as much genetic diversity as humans. Fruit flies have 10 times as much. Even our closest living relative, the chimpanzee, has been around at least several million years. There's more genetic diversity within a group of chimps on a single hillside in Gomba than in the entire human species.

Domesticated animals such as dogs also have a lot of genetic diversity, but this is mostly due to selective breeding under controlled conditions. Humans, on the other hand, have always mixed freely and widely. As a result, we're all mongrels: Eighty-five percent of all human variation can be found in any local population, whether they be Kurds, Icelanders, Papua New Guineans, or Mongolians. Ninety-four percent can be found on any continent.

Animals are also limited by habitat and geographical features such as rivers and canyons, so it is easy for groups to become isolated and genetically distinct from one another. Humans, on the other hand, are much more adaptable and have not been limited by geography in the same way. Early on, we could ford rivers, cross canyons, move great distances over a relatively short time, and modify our environment to fit our needs. We are also extremely mobile as a species. Even the remotest island tribe in the Pacific originally came from elsewhere and maintained some contact with neighboring groups.

We may think global migration is a recent phenomenon, but it has characterized most of human history. Whether we're moving halfway around the world or from one village to another, the passage of genes takes place under many circumstances, large scale and small: migration, wars, trade, slave-taking, rape, and exogamous marriage (marriage with "outsiders").

It takes a long time to accumulate a lot of genetic variation, because new variants arise only through mutation - copying errors from one generation to the next. On the other hand, it takes just a very small amount of migration - one individual in each generation moving from one village to another and reproducing - to prevent groups from becoming genetically distinct or isolated. Humans just haven't evolved into distinct subgroups.

But I can see obvious differences between people - don't those translate into deeper differences, like propensity for certain diseases?

The visual differences we are attuned to don't tell us anything about what's beneath the skin. This is because human variation is highly non-concordant. Most traits are influenced by different genes, so they're inherited independently, not grouped into the few packages we call races. In other words, the presence of one trait doesn't guarantee the presence of another. Can you tell a person's eye color from their height? What about their blood type from the size of their head? What about subtler things like a person's ability to play sports or their mathematical skills? It doesn't make sense to talk about group racial characteristics, whether external or internal.

Genetic differences do exist between people, but it is more accurate to speak of ancestry, rather than race, as the root of inherited diseases or conditions. Not everyone who looks alike or lives in the same region shares a common ancestry, so using "race" as a shorthand for ancestry can be misleading. Sickle cell, for example, often thought of as a "racial" disease afflicting Africans, is actually a gene that confers resistance to malaria, so it occurs in areas such as central and western Africa, the Mediterranean, and Arabia, but not in southern Africa. In medicine, a simplistic view can lead to misdiagnoses, with fatal consequences. Racial "profiling" isn't appropriate on the New Jersey Turnpike or in the doctor's office. As evolutionary biologist Joseph Graves reminds us, medicine should treat individuals, not groups.

On the other hand, the social reality of race can have biological effects. Native Americans have the highest rates of diabetes and African American men die of heart disease five times more often than white men. But is this a product of biology or social conditions? How do you measure this relationship or even determine who is Native American or African American on a genetic level? Access to medical care, health insurance, and safe living conditions can certainly affect medical outcomes. So can the stress of racism. But the reasons aren't innate or genetic.

Believing in race as biology allows us to overlook the social factors that contribute to inequality. Understanding that race is socially constructed is the first step in addressing those factors and giving everyone a fair chance in life.

Yukio

I should have made my point a bit more clear. The way in which I phrased my statement can easily be misconstrued. That is my fault. However, I agree totally with the information you shared about race. You gave a far better explanation than I could have.

Now, about what you have to say about my posts. I feel like you are always trying to tell me something you think I don't already know. So yeah, the sarcasm works when I feel like....you know...just poking a little fun at your arrogance. You know how that goes!

I feel the same about the "beef" thing --that there is no beef, and never has been. I do have to say, I think it was dam* near hiliarious that you insisted I apologize for "exploiting" your point and making a circus out of nothing. But to me, that is not an issue, just comical.
Now, if you think I have venom, so be it. I don't care. I don't expect you to think any different and to be quite frank, I'm absolutely indifferent to how you interpret the tone in which I write/share. I think for your own personal reasons, you will always find fault with whatever I say, no matter what I say. Maybe that is why I don't care....yeah, that is why.

Anyway, keep studying or doing whatever you're doing. Regardless of how I think you think, and how you think I think, you're a smart cat--AND intelligence is a respectable quality!

Much repsect!

Yukio,

Thanks for the anthropological essays. Yet, after all of that, you did not do a simple yet crucial thing: define the word "race".

Here is how "race" is defined by Merriam-Webster:
"race"
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle French, generation, from Old Italian razza
1 : a breeding stock of animals
2 a : a family, tribe, people, or nation belonging to the same stock b : a class or kind of people unified by community of interests, habits, or characteristics <the> 3 a : an actually or potentially interbreeding group within a species; also : a taxonomic category (as a subspecies) representing such a group b : BREED c : a division of mankind possessing traits that are transmissible by descent and sufficient to characterize it as a distinct human type

If one believes the above, one could reasonably assert that there is indeed more than one human race. How should one reconcile the above with what you (appear to) argue?

Also, I find your following comments to be interesting "Believing in race as biology allows us to overlook the social factors that contribute to inequality. Understanding that race is socially constructed is the first step in addressing those factors and giving everyone a fair chance in life."

They suggest that is not the definition/etymology of "race" itself that you take exception to but rather how the word has been abusively applied.

moonsigns: gotcha. It wasn't my explanation...it was a cut and paste job from the website I addressed to abm.

what u call comical, i call arrogance. Consider your comments:

You suggested that I, "in haste", read your post, hence, missed your point. After reading this I'm sure it is rather apparent that I have fully understand your point all along. If these aren't your opinions that you willingly wrote/expressed and supported, I would definitely apologize for exploiting your point of view --however.......

a)line 2 u claim to "fully understand" my point all along(how presumputous?)
b)line 3 u claim that if u are mistaken u would apologize.(but u didn't)
c)also, in line 3 u seem to suggest with the word "however" that it was unlikely that u were mistaken...(but u were, according to the author of the post, yukio)

I have no "personal reasons" to find fault w/ u...where is your evidence, besides that i disagree w/u....

lets leave this alone. u say u understood, and I the author of the post says u didn't...what can we do?

abm: i am not the author of that long azz post. It was a cut and paste job from the website.

I insufficiently defined race as a social construct....I could have included that this construct was based on assumptions of biological, behavioral, and intellectual differences that constituted different subspecies.

The dictionary pertains to how man(incorrectly) have defined "race" overtime.

Consequently, u have race as family, tribe, people, etc...these pertain to divisions based on different units or groupings of people. For example, in the nineteenth century, jews, italians, and the irish were not part of the white race....again, this is what humans scientifically and unscientifically understood....

My cut and paste job, basically says that there are no gene, traits, etc differences that constitute separate racial groups. It argues that 2a and 3a are scientifically incorrect.

I understand the quote differently. I understand it as addressing both the definition (either biological or sociall contructed) and its application--what we do with the notion of the word. As I understand this quote, they are arguing against the train of thought that argue that certain racial groups unequal status is the result of their inferior race/genes(this is the biological analysis). This is similar to the bell curve argument, which argues that blacks and hispanics are intellectually inferior.

Cynique

You're right, race does matter in this world as it is used as a tool of oppression. I don't wish for this to be a "color-blind" society, but rather a society that celebrates the diversity within humanity. Regardless of how we vary in traditions, faith, socio-economic backround, family backround and overall lifestyle, which does vary from culture to culture, there are underlying human needs that we all have that have nothing to do with race. As I have seen it, and proably will always see it, that is what Blacks fight to be recongnized for --their humaness above all else. For myself, that is what I hope for as well --the essence of our humanity to shine, not that we walk around with rose-colored glasses pretending as if this beautiful diversity doesn't exisit. My theories may seem fuzzy, but I think love and respect are the qualities most needed to lay the foundation for emanicpation for all people. I must continue to be strong in my convictions regarding this.

As a white american, one that I consider to be more sensitive than the next, racism saddens me. I was raised without "walls". I have parents who see the beauty in everything. It was indeed a unique experience being raised by such incredible beings. It has given me the opportunity to have much more compassion than the average white person. For that I will always be thankful. I certainly know that there are things that I can never teach my children, as I will never walk this earth in brown skin. However, I feel that what I have to teach them about spirit, about who we REALLY are and what we ultimately return to (the infinite) will better equip them to handle the lies (spirit of death) that bombards daily life in the form of subtle and overt racism. I am an optimist by nature. I have always felt that my children have an incredible purpose in this world, a purpose I remind them of almost daily. While I certainly don't know what the future holds, I know we are giving them what they need to become healthy, young people. These qualities are already reflecting in their character and conduct. I'm confident that they will continue to grow in health, wisdom, love and grace.

Cynique, I think you are really nice as well. A part of me would enjoy staying, but the tides are changing, moonsigns are changing, and my purpose here seems to be fulfilled. In the natural, what you said is true, whites do end up seeming naive. Somehow, conversation will inevitabley turn to me being white instead of a voice for positive change. Keep up with Viggo, that fione man :-) Maybe one day you'll meet him --you know, he is single afterall *wink*wink*
Writing poetry is my passion. I was doing a search on black poets and ended up here. I might share a poem with all of you before I leave --maybe, maybe! Much respect and love to you cynique ;)

It later occurred to me, Moonsigns, that in dismissing you as being a "nice lady," I was being guilty of the very patronizing I accused you of. But it is very evident to me that you are also an extraordinary woman and I don't have to wish you the best because your positive vibes will come back to you. First of all Abm, I don't think you're hateful at all. You said you "feel justified in recongnizing what has been done and effect on such on Black people." I agree, you are justified. However, whenever there is a problem, especially of this magnitude, there IS someone to blame.

Time has proved to us that whites taking responsibility for some issues is too slow coming. What you call "new age delsuions" and "psychobabble" is not as such, but your interpretation of my remedy of choice for handling the subtle and overt racism that the mass media presents and promotes. You may have your own remedy, or not one at all. I know I can't change anyone else, but my influence on my own offspring is the most dear and near to my heart. I'm too wise to think that I can shelter them from the world altogether, but while their minds are young and impressionable, I refuse to overwhelm them with images, ideas, concepts and stereotypes that they don't know how to yet process. I can't teach them how to walk in brown skin, but I can teach them the value of spirit, which when all is said and done, is the foundation of everything we are. It is the essence of what Blacks fight to be seen for, their humaness. If the foundation is strong, they are strong enough to withstand the opposition of the world --and not hate. Many people withstand, but they have so much hate in their heart that it mentally, emotionally and spiritually paralyzes them. There are prime examples of this everywhere and in every group of people.

Stepping back a bit from mainstream, American culture and taking a breath is needed. Like I said, this day and age, we are taught to be consumers. We consume stuff to the point of the death of our soul and then we are stuck thinking there is no way out. This does not concern issues of just race either. This regards foods that we consume, the lifestyles we live, our social activities and the things we chase/desire (both good and bad). I know all too well that the whites who are in control of media don't care to rectify the issue, as other groups of people who partake in the rat race. The marketing of racism is there, however, it is my choice to partake in it or not, as it is everyone elses. I refuse to poison the minds of my children and call it entertainment.

It's refreshing that you are humble enough to admit that blacks have continued to perpetuate the "onerously self-depreciating standards that have been imposed on us." About gaining equality in the media, I don't know how that is will be done. Just make sure if you have any part in it you beef up the PBS, Discovery, and the History channels, o.k.? Cool enough!

True, we agree that all women compete, however, some are made to tread in mud while others on even ground. But again, this ties into the media/consumer thing AND men. We consume images to the death of our soul. Men are irresponsible in this realm because they love the heck out of unnatural beauty more than us women. When black men begin to love and appreciate the nappy hair and dark chocolate skin of some black women, as much as they love it on themselves, maybe the ground will be made "more even". I would love to see women emancipate themselves from the unjust standards men create. There are more women than not, who do uneccessary sh*t to themselves ONLY to please men. If the majority of men could stop chasing fake hair, nails, breasts, and "delusions",naturally beautiful women would have a better sense of self. So, just as you say you'd like to see me convince others who "look" like me to think and believe the way I think --well, I'd like to see you do the same. I know you value the strength and beauty of black women, it's natural and good, however, black men do play a significant part in how black women perceive themselves. Until then, we can only be reduced to mindless circus clowns --ready to "perform" upon command!

You are correct, the effects of prejudice "profoundly differ". The examples you site are incredible and prove your point!
Not at all to discredit what you say, but I don't like hate to be justified by hate. Each of us have had unpleasant experiences with people who don't share the same culture. Experiences that could make dislike entire groups of people, I am no exception. It goes back to the old saying, "Two wrongs don't make a right." That is all I have to say about that.

About AA --I have not read up on the subject, so I say this only based on personal experience. I feel that AA is now geared towards non-Whites, espeically non-white females. I won't go into deatil about why, but I have seen it in the workforce myself, as well as my girlfriends who are white and in the corporate world.

You're right about blacks being more "accepting" of black/white couplings. But I must add, while there is more of an overall, general acceptance in the black community, I think the "love" is overexaggerated. Children are often times "embraced", however, they are still more prone to the, "you think you're cute because you're" type garbage! You also stated that you feel the spouse is more accepted, I would use the word tolerated. I feel that is more appropriate, especially if the spouse in question is female.

You may be right about issues coming up that I'm not prepared for, but you may be wrong. I am an optimist by nature and will always continue seek the best in any given situation.

This is no bellringer Abm, just how I feel.

Much respect!

Moonsigns

moonsigns: To treat people human is not to treat them all the same, but to treat them differently, for we require different things.

your program is stop the brainwashing of the media. and this is done when people choose not to partake. This route only absolves u...but it doesn't do anything, really.

This was the dilemma of the first matrix...ol dude rather be enslaved so he could have steak...lmao!

In other words, do you really think people know that they're enslaved? that their plugged into the matrix? And did zion win because they said they wouldn't partake or because they did not partake but also fought against the matrix?

Yukio,

Many people know exactly what they are plugged into, especially here in America. Other people in other countries tend not to have the power of choice we have (generally). If they didn't know they were enslaved, it wouldn't even be a topic of conversation. To know what is wrong and not act on conviction, that is being a circus clown. This is a capitalistic system. When people make the decision to use extreme discretion in where they put their money, this simple concept has the ability to revolutionize the world. Until then, it's just unproductive talk --justified, but still only talk.

You know why Zion wins and so do I.

Moonsigns, are you familiar with "ACIM - a course in miracles"? It's a very complicated belief system that just may have influenced the matrix concept. ACIM believes that the external world is just matter and that we internalize our own worlds and they take the form of dream which we will one day awake from and ascend into a better place. So the goal is to take charge of how you want your dream to evolve, and not let others corrupt it. They contend that reality doesn't exist, except in our minds.

moonsigns: I know why i think zion won. I don't know what u think, however...Thats why i asked u the question. I'm less convinced people know what they're plugged into...some people know their individual condition, but the networks that control and shape their conditions as it relates to the system is another story...

The other point was that even when people "know" that they're enslaved, they go for the steak rather than the struggle. Consequently, how likely will their be a world boycott of commodities produced through capitalism...if u haven't check labor history and civil rights, civil liberties, and histories of social movements, the boycott is a strategy of many and it is not a solution to actual institutional changing...

The Euro-US matrix is more than capitalism; it also includes a euro-american patriarch-centrism, the rhetoric of the notion of "rugged individualism," and the myth of the American Dream, particularly the sham that all we have to do is work hard and everyone can be wealthy...if u want to extend the notion of consumption, then one needs to eradicate the consumption of white euro-american "heterogemonic" values that degrade non-white people, homosexuals, and women...this is evident in literature, philosophy, science, history, etc...and law, property, etc...it takes institutionalized activism as well as "everyday" resistance to conquer this matrix...this involves, labor parties, lobbyist, etc...

Moonsigns,

Perhaps I am a bit too dismissive of your more altruistic remedies for our social ills. I genuinely concur with much of the essence of what you recommend (though your detail comes off a bit "Pollyanna" :-) for my tastes), especially where childrearing is concerned. Because if you can’t teach your own children to love, how can do so with anyone else?

And I agree we brothahs must extricate our minds and help liberate our sistahs from the delusions of Western beauty. If we can’t appreciate the innate, enduring beauty of our mothers, sisters, kin and friends, what right dare we to expect more of others.

I just am, perhaps, more doubtful that the world will ‘allow’ most of us to live as you advise. Simply, it is in the interest of very powerful people for all of us to oblige certain socio-economic construct. Thus, I also agree with much of what Yukio (appear to) assert: More overt, deliberate organizational/group efforts are required to reverse the effects of racism.

Thus, I lean more toward upping our combined efforts in economics and science/technology. We have too few entrepreneurs and physicists. I believe until people of color own/control more of the centers of business and discovery, which fuel the distribution of worldwide power, we will always be made to play catch-up to the thoughts/deeds of others. Or, it will be profoundly difficult to effect the beneficence to which you and I may aspire when others can wholly dictate how comfortably we think, eat and live.

I must admit that initially the cynic in me is somewhat disappointed with your response. Not that I don’t appreciate your commentary. But I guess the @$$hole in me had hoped you might go agitated ‘wigger’ on me like you did to A_womon a couple of times. But I guess you reserved that sentiment for dah sistahs, huh? Too bad you are leaving. I would love to see you go real down-n-dirty with your feelings about sisters have treated you over the years. That would be a HOOT.

I wish you would stay (Yeah, A_womon. I know that sounds like ABM is kissing "pail White girl tail".). As I said under another post, I have been blessed to enjoy myriad good relations with White people. Thus, I feel that we all can and should try to find a way get-over this ‘race’ thing. And we are not going to accomplish that via running and hiding from each other.

But, if you still chose not to return, I wish you and your family long life, health and prosperity. And tell the Dali Lama ol’ ABM says ‘hi’. :-)

Abm

I live my life to according to my convictions. I'm very aware that most of the world is unwillingly to live this way --unwillingly to allow everyone to live in true equality. However, I must be the change I wish to see and I hope to never lose that passion.

Why you hoped I might "go agitated wigger" on you is beyond me --pretty weird. What you think is an expression of agitation is but a slice of my fiery, smart a$$ nature. I don't allow too much to anger me. Like I said, this isn't heat, I have had conversations with many, many angry women over the years that are unproductive. BTW, I don't reserve that sentiment for "dah sistahs" either. I have no issue with black women, you know better than that! However, I take no issue with giving a verbal beat down if someone refuses to play nice and fair, especially when I've initially shown nothing but kindness.

Yeah, wouldn't it be great to forget the 'race' thing. It would have been so much nicer if you wished I could stay without the stupid justification you gave to A_womon. I know you have, and never will kiss my azz. That is why I have liked our conversation. It's been honest, open and fun --even though we have disagreed.

I do have a question for you. Why are you so curious about my "real down-n-dirty" feelings about how "sisters" have treated me "over the years". How would that be a "HOOT"? --pretty weird!

Some of the conversation here is good and I'm enjoying reading the archives! I'm sure I won't be gone forever. I'm sure I will stop in to say hi to you, Cynique and lambchop when I'm on my way to my 'wonderbread' and 'onelove' sites.

Next to Cynique, I will miss you the most. You're a good guy Abm. Blessings to you and your lovely ladies :-)

I'm going to start a support group for people who can't kick the Thumper's Corner habit. In one week's time, we've had 3 people swear off it, and yet they are all still here posting away. So stop with the "good-byes", already, and just stay! LOL! Of course, it would be more interesting if - ahem - a certain two-some would abandon their cat fight and branch out. Moonsigns, what do you think about the Khaballah? A-womon, have you read any good books lately. Or bad ones?? Hummmm. (who'd ever thought ol Cynique would end up being a peace-maker. Oh, well, on second thought, keep on jousting. Let the games continue!)

Cynique,

Haha to the "support group" quip.

I agree. They should stop all of the emphatically false "I am leaving" proclamations and simply stay and enjoy posting until they truly are ret' to go...then just GO sans the bold declarations.

A_womon,

I think you overestimate my malevolence. I don't verbally attack anyone. And almost nothing I do here is intended as prelude for any subsequent discourse.

No. I am simpler that what you suggest. Frankly, my posts are often as capricious as that of a stray leaf wafting in an early morning breeze.

A_womon,

Unlike you, Lambd and Moonsigns; I ain't trynah shake the TC monkey. But if/when I need a break or choose to go totally cold turkey, I'll jus' leave without the fanfare.

But I agree with you that Cynique had recently boasted she was taking a break. So, yeah, I guess she should be the first to say, "My name is Cynique. And I am a Thumper's Cornerholic."

I never announced that I was leaving, or followed up this announcement with a farewell speech explaining why I was doing so. I said I was taking a break. And I did.

You good people have such magnetic horsesh!+ with you, that its hard to read and not interject some of my own. You cats are way too easy to pick at, to pick with, to tease, to jone on, to hate, to love, to drink Heineken with, and to make love to. So, I am sorry if I didn't go when I said I was going to, but I aint ready. When I get ready, I will make another 'grand proclamation' and any of you cyberpunks don't like it can kiss my cyberazz azz its going out the door!...Ha! And if you keep it up, I'll take A_woman with me, and we will make love til the cows come home by the light of the pale Moon!....Aint that right, youngun...Youngun?**Camera pans to Lambd on his knees at A_woman's feet, begging***...Youngun? Cyn, I know you didn't mean no harm.

I got a feelin I'm history... but you got my email so keep in touch. And just in case I am history Let me say this:

I never meant any harm either, I just say what's on my mind. I can't be other than who I am. I ain't tryin to get anyone else kicked off the board either, when I ask questions like why do some get away with things and others don't. Hell, even Thump has lost his temper before. I mean totally lost it! And so has Carey! BUT it's thier world. They created it. I feel within myself that this board DOESNT want to hear from young people like me or Justwrite, and can't get to the way we express ourselves. They try to "put me in a box" to borrow a phrase from Yukio and Im sorry, I don't fit. I can't be sqeaky clean and proper all the time nor do I wish to be, I can't be whatever it is they want people to be here. although Im not clear on what that is, I just know whatever it is aint me. And that's ok, cause when you create a world, you are allowed to have type people populate it that you like and want to "live" there, or even visit.

I can engage in discourse and debate with the best of you, you know this. But at the end of the day it is what it is... just different people giving different opinions, and sometimes forgetting that the world is watching.

If my time here is done for good, I want to thank Troy and Thump for keeping a site like this going.
And allowing me to post my views for a time, I hope that at least some of you heard me and got what I meant.

Thanks Carey for being in my corner (most of the time) I'm smiling :-):-):-):-):-):-):-):-)

Look for me in the pages of my book WHEN it gets published. Ill be smiling then too!

Hellooooooooooooo! Time for a reality check, a-womon. This is a discussion site, not a life-altering experience. You are taking yourself more seriously than other posters do. Everybody is starting to accept how you are, and it ain't that big of a deal any more. All you gotta do is observe Thumper's minor restrictions and it will be business as usual. Just because we older people aren't floored by your opinions shouldn't matter that much to you. After all, you pretty much dismiss anything we have to say. That's just the way it is. Deal with it. The heat ain't that hot that you gotta get outta the kitchen.

A_womon,

Whaddayah want from us: To kiss your boo boo and make the pain go away? Okay. ~"Smooch! Smooch! Smoooooch! There now, widdle baby feelin' bettah?"~

Seriously, though. Yah gotta let it go. Or your hur's gon' start fallin' out or something.

'Sides. Join the club. Cuz Baby, everybody is a victim of something around here.

You think you're the victim of some reverse ageism. Yukio asserts sexism/classism. Chris might say we're Black male bashing. You-know-who would say she's fallen prey to anti-Africanism. Moonsigns would probably declare we hate White chicks.

You should wait until you get to Heaven before you expect to live in a 'fair' world.

And you can't take things soooo PERSONALLY.

Cuz you are not the only one who's gotten your share paddling. Thumper has told me to cool it SEVERAL times before. I think he even called me a fool (he wouldn't be the first). And, ironically, I think he said that in retort to something I said to YOU.

And in any family, some 'kids' get a deal that other 'kids' might complain is 'unfair'. But what the complaining kids often miss is that their siblings are doing some things that compensate for their misdeeds.

PS: If you are to grow/develop as an artist...and a person...you must broaden your perspective beyond that a clever-n-feisty hip-hopping gen' X'er. Otherwise, you are going to continue to be frustrated almost everywhere you go.

Amen ABM......AMEN! Some refuse to accept the facts because ( And I've said this before) then they would have to admit to their character defects and then CHANGE. Nope, can't do it. And that's sad. To change is hard and doing right is even harder. Doing it right is much harder than doing it OUR way, however they can be one in the same. The key is honesty, one has to be honest with themselves.

Okay, enough of the wise ol'owl stuff :-). Go on outside and play children, you see grown folk up in here.........hold up A_womon, I wasn't talking to you. "Carey's on my side......most of the time"...uuummm *smile*
