If you don't already know, a cinematic version of "Catwoman" is scheduled to be released soon. Halle Berry portrays the lead character.

What do you think of Berry playing a role that was made famous by the deliciously feline Judy Newmar and Eartha Kitt (via TV's '60's Batman series)?

I'm going to see it. I know she has been mediocre in most of her roles, but she still fine. $6.50 to see Halle Berry in a skintight black leather catsuit. I almost feel guilty, like I should be paying at least $6.75. Plus, I love comic book hero movies. I know they are tacky most of the time, but I can't help it. I'm a sucker for Superman, Batman, Spiderman, The X-men, Unbreakable (my favorite), and finally Halle Berry as Catwoman! Where is "Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu", and "Luke Cage, Powerman"! Don't forget the "Fantastic Four"...I'm a big, grown-ass, forty year old kid!

Abm:

Nothing really. Since they are going to want kids in there she ain't gonna get nasty, since she is playing a comic book character she ain't gonna act, and since it is a comic book movie nobody else is gonna act and you know there is a happy ending (she ain't gonna get killed, decide that running around with a mask on and costume is real stupid and dangerous, become a lesbian, use her talents to get rich and retire, etc) so there ain't no real suspense.

I hope the movie gets good reviews and makes a lot of money and she gets paid.

I hate comic book movies worse than I hate comic books, as if you couldn't guess.

Berry is certainly a beautiful woman. And there ain't a woman in Hollywood that can hang an evening gown like she can. Still, she isn't, at least for my tastes, particularly 'sexy'. Because in spite of her great looks, she seems to lack a certain feminine self-assurance (which may in part explain her well publicized 'man issues') that every great 'mankiller' has.

Here's a list (in no particular order) dozen female celebrities who have more raw sex appeal than Halle:
1) Viviva A. Fox (has had a body that would make even a Hollywood hooker jealous)
2) Serena Williams (got Fox's body...on 'steroids')
3) Angeline Jolie (feline eyes, luscious lips and sexually-ambivalent...all what a growing boy needs)
4) Kirsten Dunst (has a sort of loose, wayward aura about her...plus she's always up for showin' a lil' cleavage)
5) Thandie Newton (has an enchanting mix of stuck-up Brit and sistah-gurl sass)
6) Gabrielle Union (got loads of the 3B's: beauty, brains & booty)
7) Angela Bassett (I wish she would lessen the muscularity a bit though)
8) Uma Thurman (uber sensuous and cat-like clever...what did she EVER see in that scrawny Ethan Hawke anyway?)
9) Catherine Zeta-Jones (it's GOOD to be Michael Douglas)
10) Sanaa Lathan (in another life she would be mine)
11) Eva Mendes (the sexy Latina that JLo only wishes she was)
12) Condelessa Rice (She's the most powerful woman on Earth. And she speaks fluent Russian.)

I have intentionally involved including any pop/hip-hop starlets. Because it is easier to appear sexy when a standard part of your act is to look and act like an unrepentant ho'.

I'm sure I'll see Berry's movie, though. If for no other reason but to see how 'bad' it could be.

I too am a sucka for comic book movies (Let it go, Chris.). I credit my education to having developed an early, unquenchable thirst for Marvel comic books.

Halle's approach to her Cat Woman role is supposed to have been inspired by Michelle Pffeifer's consummate portrayal of this character in "Batman Returns" opposite Michael Keaton. To me, the movie doesn't look that compelling and Halle does seem to lack that certain edginess the role calls for.
"Spider Man", however, looks like it will be good.

I got the same list, except Sanaa Lathan would have been closer to the top if not at the....Also, you can drop Ms. Rice. I see her all the time and the two sexy things about her is black and female. But so is an otter. I think Ms. Union would have been right behind Ms. Lathan. That movie Deliver Us From Eva gives me the creeps. Before she came over for some hot n' heavy
I'd have to hide all the sharp objects. She reminds me of a black Lorena Bobbit. Otherwise, she'd be number one....And unrepentant ho's need love too, dammit! I luvs me some ho's!

Cynique,
I suppose I am in the minority but I never thought much of Phieffer's "Catwoman". She's was just too 'bony' in all the wrong places for me to get to her character.

Chris,
Thanks for the Blokhedz link. The style and attitude of the illustrations fairly characterizes the hip/hop culture.

Chris says: "I'm sorry to have to tell you this but you are obsessed with sex!"
ABM says: WOW! Did you figure that one out all by your lonesome...or did your observant foil, the lovely and vivacious Cynique have to hip you up on dat?

Lamb,
The list was not ranked. But, yeah, I too would have put Lathan at or near the top of that heap of luscious loveliness. But I disagree about Condelessa. I know I shouldn't feel this way but any chick who can sign-off on bombing the Middle East into the Stone Age really is going to get my juices flowin'.

Lambd say: this may be the movie that we find out Halle has been hiding that "edginess".
ABM say: I think they call that PMS.

Abm, surely, you are not saying that Michelle Pfieffer is more bony than that angular Condoleeza Rice! The Cat Woman character is more about mystique than physique, and Michelle's agonizing portrayal of a conflicted woman was what defined her effectiveness.

I liked Fifer, or Pifere, or Pffiefer, or whatever...I liked Michelle in that Catwoman role, too, but I'm going to give Halle a chance and catch that matinee. PMS or no!

Abm say: any chick who can sign-off on bombing the Middle East into the Stone Age really is going to get my juices flowin'.

Cynique,
For me, Condolessa appearance, plain though it may be, is augmented by her intellect, the position she holds and power she wields (And, again, I just can't seem to shake my 'Russian speaking Black woman' fetish). However, Phieffer's appeal is based almost entirely upon what one feels/thinks about her (alleged) beauty. Thus, on balance, I am inclined to harbor more amorous feelings about Rice than I am about Phieffer, even though I probably would concur that Phieffer is better looking.

I suspect that we disagree by the 'degree' to whether "mystique" or "physique" is most vital to effectively portraying Catwoman (I suppose this would be where women and men inherently disagree about sex in general.). But I'd bet you a Batmobile that if Black men were doing the choosing, the anorexic Phieffer would rank LOW on a list of prospective candidates for a Catwoman.

Cynique,
Well, I find Phieffer to be a bit light/flat in the T&A department for my tastes. But that's just me.

And don't even MENTION Calista ("I still think Karen Carpenter was too fat!") Flockhart. I lost a LOT of respect for Harrison Ford when I heard he'd dumped his wife for THAT self-starving chick.

Have you seen the "dog" Harrison Ford was married to. And Calista Flockhart has recently started to put on weight now that she has a man in her life.
BTW, Michelle Pffeifer is considerated one of Hollywood's premier beauties. And, yes, this distinction is determined by white standards. But - that's show biz.

Hey. I'll tell you what, Cynique. Ford's ex may be a "dog", but she sure is one rich b@+&# as I hear she cleared pert-near 9 figures in the divorce settlement.

Don't get me wrong. I agree Pheiffer (I have GOT to find the correct spelling for her name.) is a stunningly pretty woman (Well, at least she was.) But I view her much like I view Halle: Pretty => yes, sexy => no.

For instance, let's stick with the Batman franchise for a moment: Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy in the 4th Batman (George Clooney) installment was, to me, MUCH sexier/alluring than Phieffer's "Catwoman". That chick had aura screams "Come and get it boys!".

Now were I strictly judging via headshots, I probably pick Michelle over Uma. But if I met both of them in a bar, Uma is DEFINITELY the one I would try to take back to my crib.

I LOVE Uma. She's one of those RARE Caucausian actresses who don't come off as being so gratingly WHITE. (Her Pulp Fiction co-star John Travolta and George Clooney have a similar power.)

We could debate this ad infinitum. If you've ever seen Michelle interviewed you'd find out she's very funky. BTW, her adopted daughter is bi-racial and did you see Michelle in "Dangerous Minds?" Also, when I think of Hollywood dudes who exhibit a black vibe, John Travolta and George Clooney don't come to my mind. Travolta's dancing in Saturday night fever was the consummate in "white boy" dancing!

I think we are experiencing a communication glitch here. I am not saying Ms. Phieffer is or isn't funky (assuming, of course we would agree about what that means). I'm just saying, to put it BLUNTLY, she doesn’t cause this particular brothah to 'achieve wood'. She might be very funky, 'down', cool, 'jake', etc.

And I didn't say that Clooney/Travolta had a "black vibe". Nor do I think such is necessary for a White person to have their own 'flava'. Jack Nicholson has 'flava', but he doesn't act Black. Gene Hackman has it also. So does Clint Eastwood. I guess that is why their careers have endured over the decades. And a young example of such would be Johnny Depp. Even your 'precious' Viggo Mortensen seems to have some of that quality.

It is not so much about race (or whether one can dance...HAHA!), it is about having a unique, indelible style that transcends their race.

I just have to ask, to be clear:

Cynique, what is the "black vibe" and Abm, what is it to "act black" ??? I am genuinely interested. Folk tend to become greatly offended by such remarks. I believe that I am one of them, but at the same time, I am starting to believe that perhaps, there is such a thing?? Or, maybe the idea is just articulated incorrectly? I don't know.

Right now, i am honestly interested in being enlightened.

Jack Nicholson is indeed quite funky!!

Don''t get me started, Lambd. Viggo is of Danish descent, was born in Manhatten, spent his childhood in Argentina, and hold a bachelor's a degree from St Lawrence college. He does lead a Bohemian lifestyle because in addition to being an actor, he is a poet, artist and a deep thinker. Trailer Park trash he is not. BTW, his salary for "Hidalgo" was 5.5 million, Best of all, he is anti-establishment, which means he is a staunch opponent of the war in Iraq.

Did anyone see it? "Weak for the Flesh" , written, produced, and directed by Lambd. Starring in and imagined by....LAMBD!!!!!!!!!
You know, in certain circles, he is know as, "The Poet, Lambd" I was born in DC but I was raised in Maryland. I don't have a degree, but I am a bachelor. I take college courses and I have a friend named Lawrence....Me and Viggo got a lot in common. I've even had National Bohemian once. Hey! I had a Danish for breakfast... We could be twins!

BINGO! I have have at long last found her weakness. Superman has kryptonite, Cynique has Viggo Mortensen.

Lambd,
Now now, playah. No need to be 'jello'. Besides, you know those Hollywood types are never as 'pretty' in reality as they appear on the Silver Screen.

Akaivyleaf,
Happy to have helped to entertain you. :-)

Bleekindingo,
That is indeed an interesting subject to broach. Though I am somewhat reticent to offer an answer as I am sure "act black" means different things to different people.

But let's be real: On balance, Blacks and Whites are constructed differently and we live (often very) difference lives. And that difference manifests itself in how we view and behave within this world.

For example, Blacks tend to have a different vocal timbre than do Whites. And think that the source of that difference is as much social as physiological. So our Black Blues, for example, might sound different from their White Rock, when in truth we all know Rock is just the Blues song by White dudes.

I understand why you may become offended those descriptions. Because surely not all Black people "act" the same. And the is a lot of pathology being associated with certain products of the "black vibe".

But be careful avoid throwing the 'Baby' out with the 'Bath water'.

Because it is only natural for a people of a similar background to develop/maintain something unique and specific to their community/origins. What we common do amongst ourself isn't inherently more negative than Jews celebrating Barmitzva and speaking Yiddish.

And I REVEL in the much our social/cultural distinction. Frankly, you can say that to "act black" has been one of the single greatest initiators of social and artistic change and evolution in this country's history.

Well, Bleekindigo, to me, a black vibe is almost indefinable. You'll know it, if you see it. It's having that subtle emanation known as "soul", about being cool, and hip. These are unique traits that have their origin in the black experience but certain white people have a capacity for exuding this aura.

My fixation on Viggo is on another plane. I can compartmentalize it, and it doesn't blind me to the assets of other attractive men. Viggo is just one of my guilty pleasures, and I'd never have given him a second look if he hadn't played Aragorn in LOTR. I also like the fact that early in his career he was told to get his teeth capped, have plastic surgery on the scar above his lip and to change his silly name, all of which he adamantly refused to do, and after paying his dues for almost 20 years, he finally made it to Hollywood's A-list. So much for my Danish pastry.

Cynique-

I must admit that when Viggo recited D.H. Lawrence's poem in G.I. Jane:

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
Without ever having felt sorry for itself.

I was slightly-uh, captivated. I think that he has some of the most--genuine eyes. What he is genuine about, I cannot say. It might very well be the worst thing-but, they are genuine nonetheless.

And so, I would like to close this entry with: HI MY NAME IS BLEEKINDIGO AND I TOO HAVE HAD A FIXATION WITH THE ONE KNOWN As VIGGO.

Damn Viggo! Got my wife, sisters/friends and teenage daughter/nieces fawning over him. And then when I come here, there's more of the same!

Note for my journal: Burn those dangblasted LOTR DVD's!

Bleekindigo! I can't believe it! Another Viggoholic! His eyes are, indeed, compelling. They are the one consistent thing about him. In many ways he's a chameleon because he looks different from movie-to-movie, or even from scene-to-scene, but he steals whatever frame he's in because of the nuance of his interaction with other characters. He really has a fascinating sceen persona.

BTW, Lambd, Abm and Chris, don't think I'm not aware of how witty and smart all of your are. I couldn't ask for a better threesome to play off of. :-)

OK, let's put our barf bags away and return to business-as-usual, you male chauvinist pigs.
