It seems that Jerri Ryan (who played "69" or something on Star Trek) had filed papers in their divorce stating that Jack Ryan took her to sex clubs on three occasions and tried to make her have sex in front of people)

Did that Obama candidacy just take on new life?

A sentiment is growing among Illinois Republicans for Ryan to remove himself from the senatorial race.

Cynique,

HAHA! I think you may have made a Freudian slip. Actually, Jerri's character on Star Trek was called "7 of 9".

But, yeah, Jack "The Freak" Ryan is done!

Heads up, Chris! I'm not trying to "worm out" of anything! You wrote what Abm accused me of posting. What's up wid you guys? (Back on the pipe?)

Boy y'all sure know how to stray off topic. I have to admit Chris' "69" comment in the first post funny -- Fredian slip or not.

Seriously is this divorce based soley on the fact that they went to sex clubs together?

Obama has chosen to take the high road and not comment. Probably the best strategy?

Troy:

I don't know if those were the sole grounds upon which she asked that the marriage be dissolved. I don't even know if the Court found them to be true. These are apparently allegations she made in her pleadings.

Yes. They say when your enemy is destroying himself, try not to get in the way. I think Obama ought to remain above it and allow the Born Again Wing of the Republican Party to savage him alone.

Incidently a while back on another board somebody had stated that Ryan had hired a camera crew to follow Obama everywhere he went and film his every move. The people who posted this announcement were asking for folks to come up with a counter strategy (they were talking some crazy sci fi mess).

Looks like somebody in the Obama camp knows how the hog eats the cabbage.

Troy Says: Seriously is this divorce based soley on the fact that they went to sex clubs together?

ABM Say: Since Cynique is a Chicagoan, she could probably provide a more informed opinion. But what I find ironic about this is that (by the confession of his ex-wife) Ryan never committed adultery or was even abusive to his wife. And he was such even in spite of the fact that his ex' admits to having been unfaithful to him (I seem to recall reading that while married to Jack, Jerri was going "7 of 9" with the Executive Producer of Star Trek Voyager.). The only 'offense' Jack apparently committed was he took her to some freaky clubs 2 or 3 times and he allegedly was a bit of a control freak (BTW: Name ONE rich man who ISN'T such.).

Frankly, I think had Jack Ryan been upfront about his sex-club jaunts EARLY in during the primary race, everyone would have quickly got over this and he could have still been a viable senatorial candidate.

ABM Says: Of course it is. No need to toss a match into a fire that is already burning down your adversary's house?

Chris,
I too find it ironic that the now-disgraced Ryan had assigned someone to dig up dirt on Obama. Perhaps what is occuring now is a sobering bit of 'divine reciprocity'.

Abm:

Once revealed he was through. The Right wing born again crowd will not accept this. Witness what happened to Newt Gingrich when it was revealed he was doing the same thing Clinton was. It would be the same as a liberal Democrat being revealed as Pro-life, or a member of the Aryan Nations (in New York or a black district) or a gay basher or Pro Palestinian.

I don't think it is ironic. I don't think it was an accident, either.

Chris,
I might agree with you were to referring to a national election. But we are talking about electing a senator for just one state, Illinois. And Illinois has apparently growing progressively 'liberal' as of late. As recently as 10 years ago, Illinoisans elected the first Black female US Senator, voted against Bush in 2000 and now has a Democratic Governor.

I think had be been upfront from the giddy-up and sort of laugh the thing off as just some quirky attempt to spice up a failing sex-life, he might have not only gotten past this, he might have even garnered some sympathy. After all, we live in a age that has survived Monica Lewinsky and where the most popular pharmaceutical prescriptions are issued for the burgeoning assortment of male potency drugs.

What do you mean by "I don't think it was an accident..."? And 'who' do you suppose is REALLY behind the destruction of Ryan's senatorial aspirations?

I'm surprised so many people outside of Illinois are all into this Ryan situation. I guess it titillates the imagination. Naturally, the Republican hierarchy is upset about the divorce revelations, and are calling for Ryan to step down. But all of the informal polls taken among Illinois voters are suprisingly blase about the whole thing, the typical respose being that it's nobody's business what goes on behind the closed doors of a marriage. Ryan, himself, says the only thing he's guilty of is propositioning his WIFE in an inappropriate environment. Me, I think it's funny. BTW, the guy who was following Obama around with a cam corder was doing it in public, claiming he was keeping a record of any statements Obama made in case he later tried to deny them. This jerk was on Ryan's staff, and Ryan called him off, saying he didn't mean from him to get that carried away with his survellience.

To paraphrase a relevant saying, "Often, it is not the crime itself that gets a crook nabbed, it is the cover-up that does him in."

It is not the sex-club thing per se that is causing Jack Ryan’s political destruction. Most grown foks have SOMETHING(S) that is better off firmly locked away in our sexual ‘closets’. Rather, it is his LYING about or OMITTING what he did and why he did it (e.g., the laughably convenient "I did it to protect my son." excuse) that is killing him.

BTW: I hear that Ryan’s senatorial opponent Baraka Obama admitted VERY EARLY in his political career that he is a recovering drug addict. I think that if Illinois voters can tolerate the possibility of Obama having once ‘tooted a crack pipe’ they probably can get over Ryan trying to get a little "buck wild" with his wife.

Cynique,
I guess we are interested in Illinois politics for much the same reason we enjoyed witnessing Actor Arnold Schwarzeneger's ascent to the California Governor's office. It's GREAT theatre! And Ryan's "sex in public" thing has a compelling aura of 'Clintonian' self-destructiveness about it.

Abm:

They are announcing that Ryan is quitting the race.

My advice to you. Never run for office. They'll have a video of you sitting up buck naked in the strip club and you'll come back saying , "But this has no bearing on the issues."

Jeez!
