Has Colin Powell’s almost ‘regal status’ as the triumphant, charismatic warhero protected him from being held accountable for the dastardly deeds of the Bush Administration?

Why hasn’t he incurred the same level of blame that is being charged to fellow AA Bush teamer Condi Rice? Is this difference due to their apparent differences in political positions, is it due to his being a war hero, is it because he’s male and she’s female or is it even because he ‘better looking’?

Hasn't the bloom finally faded from the once aromatic bouquet of the illustrious Colin Powell?

Colin Powell comes across as an almost tragic figure if it's true what is being reported as being in Bob Woodward's latest book. Powell was not in the loop when it came to invading Iraq and his opinions were not respected by Cheney, Rumsfeld or Bush. Condoleeza Rice knew more about the situation than he did. Why he keeps defending an administration that has made him look like a lackey I don't know! Maybe he likes all the fringe benefits that come with being Secretary of State, even if he is apparently just a figure head.

I WANT to not blame Powell. But I can’t help thinking that he should have known these guys/Condi were NUTS. Besides, how could he willing work for a guy whom he could lap 3X’s on an IQ test?

I would have much more respect for Powell if he had resigned PRIOR to the Iraqi invasion. That would have sent a clear message to EVERYONE, including many of Bush’s supporters, that this Iraqi war was a BAD idea.

But he, instead, helped Bush/Cheney to make a chase for the war. In fact, after he did his dog-n-pony show before the UN, even many of us who were against the war began to straddle the fence. And now that things are going badly, he goes crying to Bob ‘Watergate’ Woodward.

I just wonder whether it’s time we start to look more critically at just ‘who’ and ‘what’ the wondrous Colin Powell REALLY is.

Abm:

I don't think Powell is so much getting a pass that the media, which is primarily cheerleader for whatever administration in power, wants to cast him as the good guy, Mr. Reasonable, etc. Plus they are probably loathe to attack a black success story--they need to turn me loose on him. Colin would have to fistfight me or lose his self respect when I was through with him.

I think that he has been cast as the Good Soldier, doing his duty though in opposition to the unpopular Bush policies and Condoleeza as a handpuppet that they have caught in several lies--always a big no no.

As for looking more critically at him, I told people this years ago when they were talking about how much power he had and how he was the man. He is a good soldier. He would do anything they ordered him to do.

He has been theirs for 40 years. He is not, nor has he ever been, ours.

i'm not sure if yall remember, but as cynique stated, colin was out of the loop and he was adverse to many of the decisions they made...the fact is within the administration...bush is the leader, but in terms of being castigated anyone can be a victime, even mr.bush....

I really think Colin has been seduced by the world-wide prestiege that goes with being America's Secretary of State. That's his trade-off for toeing Bush's line. What does Powell care about the particulars? He's earned his place of honor in history.

these folk, condo r. and colin or colon as amiri baraka calls him, are committed "americans" and to political life, thus quitting, etc...is not a viable option.

Foks, I think maybe it is time for us all to let the Colin Powell snowjob melt.

Did you know Powell is a member of the infamous Carlyle Group? The Carlyle Group is this super-secretive group of investors (sort of a post-Yale "Skull & Bones") that collectively has $billions invested in petroleum, oil/gas, defense, construction companies, etc. throughout the world. Cheney, Bush Sr./Jr., former Sec of State Jim Baker, Wolfowitz are also members of this omnipotent "outfit".

Truth is, Powell will, in all likelihood, make millions on the Afghanistan/Iraqi wars, the reconstruction of those countries and on all the natural resource that are looted from them.

Did you know that Powell is reputed to be worth 30 - $100M? Now I don't decry his wealth. But how does a man who has been a career soldier and public servant acquire that kind of wealth in so little time UNLESS if he isn't firmly entrenched within and comfortable with the dominant wealth/power structure?

Chris, I agree that the media has allowed Powell to play the role of "good cop" to Bush/Cheney "bad cop". I, however, think we may disagree about how complicitous Powell has been in how he has been used, by Bush, the media and even us. Because a reasonable mind could conclude that Powell has skillfully used the halo that we all enjoy placing above his regal head to brandish his reputation and enrich his bank account enormously.

I think the teflon Colin will emerge from this whole mess unscathed, Chris and Abm. Actually, the fact that he's out of the loop might work in his favor. He can distance himself from all of the duplicity by saying he was misled. BYW, Chris, I think the jury is still out on how history will judge Bill Clinton. Also, I have read that Colin Powell's wife suffers from depression, and I'll bet this has something to do with the conflicted and alienated role she has been placed in by her husband's political affliations. Other things I read about her would seem to indicate that she was not conservative in her views, and because of being exposed to racism while growing up, she'd really be more comfortable among black Democrats.

Cynique:

Bill Clinton's name will be forever linked to Monica Lewinsky. That he was impeached over lying about an affair with a Whitehouse Intern will be the first sentence in almost every article or book about him.

Too bad.

Other than that people will differ--some will say he was great, others, like myself, will say he was a duplicitous weasel (and I ain't a Republican) who favored the rich and couldn't get any of his program through who has practically destroyed the Democratic party and who was able to take advantage of black folks' infantile desire to be "loved" and trick them into thinking he was the best thing since sliced bread.

Historians have been very tolerant of other Presidents like Thomas Jefferson having black kids by his slave mistress, Andrew Jackson living in sin with his wife before she was divorced, FDR breathing his last breath in the company of his mistress, JFK being a shameless womanizer.Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Bill Clinton cleared up the national debt. That alone impresses me. If we're lookin for scruples and integrity in a president, we'll have to elect a woman to the office.

Cynique:

After the performances of Margaret Thatcher, Katherine Harris, and our dear little Condoleeza, among others, I am surprised you, The Cynique, should think that just adding a woman to the mix will result in integrity and scruples.

If a woman has integrity and scruples she will not be allowed to take that office. We thought that if women were allowed into these positions they would be better. We were wrong.

They are no worse, and merely their being female would not disqualify them for any office.

I just know that if a female president gets in the Oval office and I haven't contributed at least a million bucks toward her campaign I aint got nothing coming from her either.

I was being a bit facetous, Chris. But in my heart I do think that if women ran countries, they would be less likely to go to war than male ones.

If they really ran the countries and were not fronting for a bunch of rich men, I agree. What do you think it would take for that to happen?

If chicks ran things, yawl would eventually get around to be being just as crazy as us dudes. Hell, at least 1/2 of all history’s wars had women who figured prominently amid their urging.

Chris, make excellent points in the women he cite. Reagan never would have acquired his worldwide preeminence sans Thatcher. Harris practically put Bush Jr. in office herself with her shenanigans in FL (and got a tidy little promotion from the backwater FL state government to the lofty confines of the US Congress in the offing). And, I repeat: Condelessa Rice has a @#$%ing oil tanker named after her for Christ Sake!

This ain’t about gender/sex, this is about power/money/glory. And women are no more immune to the lure of those treasures than are men.

BTW: Honestly, I would rather have a fistfight with Bush Jr., Cheney and Rumsfeld all together than I would want to put-up-nubs with Condi. I know she’s a sistah and all. But that chick looks she’s killed people!

I agree Clinton will be forever marred by the Lewinsky affair. Not not so much because of what he did with his Presidential cigar collection but rather how the GOP contorted that into some fallacious perjury flap that gave them the legal grounds to take a stab at his outster (which was primarily payback for Nixon/Watergate). No matter his fiscal and legislative accomplishments, Clinton will always be remembered as only the 2nd American President to have ever been impeached.
