I shook the dust off my library card and caught up on some reading. What are you guys reading and what do you think so far?
I've read
The Darkest Child- It's killing me not to do a post on this one. I'm not sure what the rules are for chat books
Portable Promised Land-Cute but not impressed
Greenwhichtown by Joyce Palmer- I really enjoyed this one
Conversation with the Mann- Like John Ridley's style
More Like Wrestling- Woul have made a better movie of the week instead of a book.

Hey Klb! I just finished The Last Integrationist by Jake Lamar - a good read. I recommend it. I'm about to start Love by Toni Morrison.
I read More Like Wrestling. It was ok, kinda slow at times and I'm not sure I'd enjoy it more as a movie or not. But not bad as a first novel.
I recently read John Ridley's The Drift and really enjoyed it so now I've added Conversation with the Mann and a couple of others to my wish list.

I just finished When All Hell Breaks Loose by Camika Spencer - very good read! and The Justus Girls by Slim Lambright - pretty good.
I'm currently about a third of the way through The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. So far, so good! (Thanks for the recommendation Cynique and Troy.)
Next up is A Gathering of Old Men by Earnest Gaines and Leaving by Richard Dry. |

The Mailroom - Hollywood History From the Bottom Up - David Rensin. Great read. Very interesting.
Lawless - Christopher Darden (mystery). I enjoy his mystery series. He has two different characters.
Apprentice to the Flower Poet Z - Debra Weinstein. Really enjoying this book. Author has a sly sense of humor.
Getting Our Breath Back - Shawne Johson. Just picked it up, haven't started it yet.

Hi All,
At the moment I am reading "Family Affair" by Marcus Major.
Over the weekend I finished "Sugar & Spice" by Keith Lee Johnson and "Drama Queen" by La Jill Hunt. I found both books to be pretty good.
I have been debating with myself on the purchase of Jayson Blair's tell all book. I want to know what made him to it. Anyone read it?

Hi, I'm reading "An Ordinary Woman" by Donna Hill, it's going pretty good. Also, alternating a little winter wonderland, suspense with Dan Brown's, "Deception Point"- and EXCELLENT THRILLER, and now I'm reading his book "Angels and Demons" the preview to "The Davinci Code". |

"Little Children" is my first Perrotta novel. I "discovered" him through St. Martins "Read It First" e-mails. I've discovered some good books this way.
Are the others great reads? I know that a movie was made of "Election." |

I thought "The Wishbones" perfectly captured that midlife melancholy when you realize things haven't turned out "exactly" as you'd hoped/planned but you're still not ready to give up. It was funny, sharp and sweet. "Election" was a scream. I read it after I saw the movie which I really enjoyed.
I'll check out the St. Martin's emails.
Also, if you like Richard Russo (Empire Falls, Nobody's Fool) Robert Boswell is an author I found recently who falls into the same category. I read "Mystery Ride" by Boswell and juts picked up "American Owned Love".

Yvette; I read When All Hell Breaks Loose last week and really enjoyed it. At first I didin't think I was going to get through it but it made a surprise turn midway and was an excellent read. I also enjoyed the Justus Girls.

I wish I could read like Bookgirl. I'm finishing up White Boy Shuffle by Paul Beatty. Funny book in a very off-beat way. I needed to reference a dictionary a few times.
Tiquan how did you like Slave? I just finished Francis Bok's book Escape from Slavery.

I just started The Polished Hoe by Autstin Clarke and Hotel Alleluia by Lucinda Roy. Both are starting off good so far. I'll keep you posted. I think I'll tackle the D'code next. |

I'm reading The Package by Nicklas Maddox and Nea Williams. It's hard to tell if this is fiction or true to life. UCLA is in trouble for doing the main plot of the book - selling body parts. I'm telling everyone it's a must read for anyone reader out there, we could be next. |

Good looking out Yukio. I do use the libraries but sometimes don't find some of the self-published books or the releases by the smaller publishing houses that I want to check out.
My house is like a lending library so I like to buy as many books as I can to get my folks to read. I find that they soon start buying books also and then we swap. |

Bookgirl become a book reviewer.
I just finished Never Die Alone by Donald Goines. I read the book in about 5 minutes (it was just very short). It was really little more than a short story. This was my first Goines book and I only read it because I plan to go to see the movie next week. It will be interesting to see how this book has been adapted to the screen; because it was not that deep -- then again that probably makes it perfect for adaptation.

I'm trying Troy. LOL Yes; becoming a reviewer was foremost in my mind. A local weekly in my town has accepted me as a reviewer. I have a background in media. So; I'm just waiting for the books to arrive and to get started.
I've applied to a few web sites (hint, hint) and I am waiting to hear something. LOL

Hey bookgirl I have to say I did sleep on mary monroe for awhile i just let God dont like ugly sat on my library at home.Then when my husband started complaining about all the books i be buying and not reading i decided i better read it.Now she is one of my favorite authors. |

I recently read Monroe's The Upper Room and it has one of the craziest characters in it that I've ever read. I was "oh my goodness" all throughout the book. Ms. Soul, I've had The Upper Room on my shelf for well over a year and even passed it around to others before I got to it. You all really need to check out Mama Ruby in that book! |

Crystal girl you have got to read God dont like ugly.This is one of the best books I have ever read.At first I didnt want to read I have been threw it.My mother and sister's told me you know you need to read this book so it sat on my shelf yes i admit i let it sat and collect dust but my husband bless his heart was like we goona threw some serious drama maybe you should read it.And then finally i read it.It was the hardest books I ever read but now i am glad i did.Now i got to admit the sequl i loved it but i was like it took to long to get to the meat.But if this is the only book you read this month i'd say read it. |

I slept on Mary Monroe for a long time too. I just finished God Still Don't Like Ugly and you were right about the sequel taking too long to get to the meat of the story. LOL I got tired of her re-telling the first book. Still; I liked the way it turned out for Annette and her family. I guess Rhoda got what she sowed....
I'm going to read Brian Keith Jackson's second novel as soon as it comes in the mail...any day now. I liked his "The Queen Of Harlem" and loved his "A View From Here". He's another one I slept on for a long time. Just going to rest my eyes for now..... |

Bookgirl i'm glad somebody feels the way I feel about God still.Its a good book and she's a brilliant writer but the sequel I felt took to long for Rhoda to get what was coming to her.What did you think about what happened to rhoda's brother?And what about pee pee? Girl I loved to part when he told anette dont he deserve some happiness.He was like why cant we get married.I was so happy annette ended up with him.I see i have slept on another author I have never heard of brain.But then again belive it or not E lynn harris is from Memphis 45 minutes from me and Eric Dickey is from Little Rock 1 hour 30 minutes from me and I aint never read either of they books looks like I would support locals.I have at least brought a Dickey book and its collecting that dust I be talking about.Now E lynn i did make the effort to get one of his books at the library but never read me.Now aint that a shame? |

Oooh, so many titles that I don't have, I'm definitely adding these to my to purchase list.
Michelle, I LOVED Sugar & Spice by Keith Lee Johnson. Be sure to get ready for Pretenses which is coming outin June. How was A Family Affair? I really like Marcus Major's writing; especially his sense of humor. I haven't had an opportunity to read his latest though. :-(
Anita, I'm dying to read All I Need to Get By. Please be sure to let us know how it turns out for you.
Tiquan, how did you like Counting Raindrops? I really enjoyed that one. If you're male, PLEASE PLEASE give me your thoughts. I want to discuss this one with a man definitely because of the theme (a woman afraid of committment).
I've been in a reading slump over the past few weeks, but the last books I read were:
The Man in My Basement - I really enjoyed this one. It started off slow for me and I kept slipping books in instead of finishing it, but I finally went back to it and I'm glad I did. It picked up rather fast and about 2/3 into it, I was hooked. I liked the discussions between the characters and found myself reflecting on the whole idea of guilt and how far we can let it control us. I wasn't expecting the ending either. It seemed to "fit" but was a bit abrupt for me.
The Me I Knew I Could Be by Crystal Phillips - This is an older book about a woman's journey through weight loss and finding happiness, self-esteem, and that sort of thing. It was decent, but I dunno; something doesn't sit right with me about the whole story. She includes exercises, recipes, as well as steps she took and the catalyst to get her out of her rut as well as the roots of her problems. The jury is still out on this one.
I'm also reading a book I started quite a while back and all I find myself saying is SO WHAT, WHO CARES? I want to slap a big ole CNF on it and send it back to the author, but I'm really, really trying.
Up next is Crave by Darnella Ford. I'm REALLY looking forward to that since I loved her self-published version of Rising. And, I hope to also read Better Than I Know Myself by Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant and A Love Story by Denene Millner and Nick Chiles before the month is over.

"Family Affair" was a good read, but not as good at "Good Peoples. In the last week I also read:
My Brothers Keeper by Reshonda Tate Billingsley
Lovin' Mrs. Jones by Edward Dean Arnold. I loved this book. It was a true black love story without the usual drama and overly drawn-out sex scenes.

Anita, thanks for letting me know. I absolutely love the title as well as the cover. I'll pass on the thread until I've read the book. I don't like spoilers when I haven't read the book.
And yep, I read Eden, Ohio. It's a very good read, but was a very laborious one for me. It was very hard for me initially because I couldn't "deal" with those dropped articles and verbs. I kept reading and re-reading.
Someone told me she did the same thing in her first book. It's something "different" and once I got past the above, I really enjoyed it...I just don't know if I like how it was told.
I'm very glad I finished it though -- her characterizations of Eden and how she fleshed out her characters are well worth the read. Additionally, I loved how she focused on families, communities, and how sins of the father affect those who come after them.
Again, a very good, but laborious read.

I want to read all the ones you all have discussed. I'm about to read Hottentot Venus by Barbara Chase-Riboud. Anyone read that one yet? I finished Fifth Born, which reminded me of Push, which reminded me of Gal. |

Hey Bookgirl,
Yes, I read A Little Piece of Sky, and really enjoyed it. It was quite touching, and I loved this authors colorful verse and character depiction. There was one particular passage that touched me, and reminded me of my own childhood. The author wrote "The skin i'm in is dark brown like a coffee bean. My face is so shiny that I'm ashamed because I unwittingly defy conventions of beauty. I'm really not that bad-looking, but people don't see that. They simply look at this shiny-faced balck girl, and they wish they don't see me. But sometimes they do."

I like it Sisg; but it doesn't read like a novel to me. I love her way with words. You are right that the verse is colorful and so beautiful but something is off-key for me.
Maybe I'll feel different when I finish the read. Smiles. |

In a desperate move to overcome this "been-there- done-that" mindset that has me in its grip, stifling what used to be a healthy appetite for books, I'm on my way to the library to peruse the shelves and cruise the aisles, hoping something will catch my eye and hold my interest. I'm distressed that my attention span has become so short and that I no longer want to read about people who exist only in the minds of authors. Will this phase ever pass??? Why am I so bored and jaded? First my fantasy to retreat to the sanctuary of a studio apartment, and now this.( I really do have to stop using this board as my personal journal.)Maybe I need Jesus - only he already has a girlfriend named Manuela Garcia. Joke, yes. Funny, no. |

Cynique girl get you a warm bubble bath let calgon take you away when I was younger I use to get so mad when I would here my moma say calgon take me away now I be saying it when i need to get away anyway get you a nice hot cup of mocha and curl up on the couch with a good book one of my favorites is the warmest december ever read that one?Any way girl yes read you a few verses of the bible and be thankful to just be here some people didnt even wake this morning. |

Yoga is the bomb. I relaxes you and you exercise without much stress on the body.
Guess what I discovered at the library? They have videos like blockbuster. So now I'm catching up on all the movies I haven't seen --all of them. |

Cynique I got your book in the mail today and I am going to start on it as soon as I finish this book I am reading now.Thank you and that was so kind of you to send it.I guess their are really some nice people online.Btw I have never tried Yoga Klb and my library problaby would charge me extra to check out movie aint that a shame.Belive it or not I had to pay $20.00 just to get a library card since we don't have a public library here and i'm like 8 miles from the only one here and I don't live in the city limits now aint that something.But since my girls love to read I went ahead and payed I can't deny my girls access to all those books.And belive it or not I had actually donated books to that library before that.Any way go firgure where they come up with all those policies. |

Bookgirl, I read this book last year. I enjoyed it. It's read like very autobiographical-like. The chapters were more like sketches, which gave glimpses of the character's life, and worked very well. |

Yes Jmho; I enjoyed the read also. It was more like reading a journal than a novel. It did work well; as she left out a lot, yet you still got the whole picture. I thought that was very crafty. She's a very talented writer and I'm ordering her second book today.
I just started Water Marked by Helen Elaine Lee last night and I am really enjoying it. She's another author that I slept on. |
