Hello All,
Michael Owens mentioned this book on the board a while back and I looked it up. It sounded interesting so I ordered it. After 2 and half weeks, I finally got the book in my hands and started reading it after I finished The First Thing Smoking. Lord of Dark Places is a stone TRIP! The book reminds me of Gayl Jones' novels. I'm still in the first half. I'll let you all know how it turns out. |

I had mentioned the Hal Bennett book on the post about black erotica; now that you are reading the book I'm going to have to go down to my storage area and dig it out to read again. Hope you enjoyed it. Bennett has several other books and a collection of short stories {he even wrote a romance novel using another name}. Unfortunately, most of his stuff is probably out of print. The old publication Black World had a very good critical essay on him back in the mid-seventies. |

Mike e: I apologize for not giving you your props. My bad. I love IT!!
Everyone: *screaming* Listen...this book is NOT for the folks who read the U-go-girl books, this book is much too powerful for you. Yukio, you know I love you but baby, you ain't old enough to read this book. Lord of Dark Places is not da bomb, its da BOOM! This book is STRONG! It was almost too strong for me. I have been reading this book all week and I just finished it a few minutes ago. Oh my goodness gracious, if the sex scenes didn't almost do me in, the politics and statements on race relations almost did.
The starting basis of the book is that a near genius, Titus Market, whose parents were aunt and nephew, starts a religion based on the size of his 12 year old son's, Joe, penis! *LOL* While Bennett plays on the obvious, he uses this as a platform to discuss race relations in the US, black folks in the church, racism and how black men are perceived and treated. One example of that is the fascination with the black man's gentials. The book is timeless, graphic, thought provoking, humurous and somewhat heart breaking.
I ordered the book through Amazon.com and as I stated earlier. It took me a couple of weeks to get it, but damn, it was worth IT! This is real literature. It would be a damn shame if this novel is out of print! I know Lord of Dark Places will go down as one of my most memorable books that I have read this year. |

Thumper you’re gonna get me thrown off the bus with this book! I started reading it yesterday on the way home [got it at the library] and have had 2 or 3 laughter explosions and a couple of “oh my goodness”’s already – and I’m only on page 30. I like how he throws a good one at you and then forces you to slow down and think about it. I think I’m gonna like this. |

Hello All,
Crystal: Isn't that book a hoot!? Just keep on reading it gets better. There's a part about Joe's sexual encounter with a white woman. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but it's a real trip. Bennett gets deeper and more philisophical in the later half of the book. |

Thumper: you mean that thing with the fence? Yea, that brought on another "Damn"! I’m in the middle of the war right now. It’s making me all teary and stuff – that was my era you know but it could have been written today. 35 years later and the shit's still happening. |

Crystal: Ain't that the truth! And TITUS!!?!! Ok, class the term for today is SICK TICKET! As much as Titus disgusted me, he had me giggling in a few spots (like him marrying that hooker and his exit from the story). He was a fascinating character to read. |
