Yukio,

I am new to this group and I found your post while browsing the topics. I love Baldwin and I watch my fair share of PBS, but I missed this doc. Where do you hail from? I'm in San Diego. I'll have to check the PBS listings here.

Baldwin is one of the most powerful writers I've ever read. His work is so strong it hurts to read it sometimes. My heart was broken when he died in the late 80s from stomach cancer. I guess his passions consumed him from the inside out. I'm always disappointed and perplexed why his work isn't marketed more than it is.

have u read his short story sonny's blues? nice! I've not enough of his work, but in the next 2yrs, i hope to read most if not all of his fiction and some of his non-fiction, excluding his reviews, of course....since he did so many....

Yukio,

"Syllabi"? You mean like college? Please bear with the west coast illiterati. :-)

I have not read Sonny's Blues, but I feel a trip to the book store coming on. I've read "Go tell it on the mountain" and "Another Country," both memorable. Yeah, that's the good stuff.

Loved Baldwin's If Beale Street Could Talk and so much of his early works. Think that I'll do re-read of his work. It's been a long time.

Also, there's a new joint Baldwin book coming out this summer -- Native Sons. His correspondence and a play and short story he co-wrote.
