I think we agreed to disagree over the definition of Erotic (vs straight up Porn)
Have you ever read an erotic novel or story that you thought was a classic of literature? Or is it all trash? |

Hello All
And Happy New Year - I believe this is my first post in the '04.
To give y'all some background on this sister -- I love erotica to me it stimulates emotions/mind over flesh/quick sensations although there is fine line.
I am sure that we all can agree on junior erotica such as Judy Blume's Forever -- but for me the closes African American - I have read and remember reading -- erotica outside of Erotic Noir -- whew that is some work -- is Tina McElroy Ansa's The Hand I Fan With -- it was a love story but boy did those moments got steamy -- I have heard about The Story of O but have not conquered that domain - tee hee -- I am looking forward to reading the addtional posts

D. H. Lawrence is obviously an "erotic" author and ALL his books are considered classics.
I can't think of any black lit erotica that I would classify as "classic". I did read the short story collection that Kola wrote and was impressed with the one called "Own Me Night". Is that erotica? I think Cynique and somebody else said they read it. That whole book was kind of erotic but creepy and ultra-political, too. My hubby seems to get horny reading a lot of the stories but I dont' think they categorized that book as erotic (or is it?)?
I read Story of O years ago but can't remember much of it now.
Anne Rice has some really good erotica. Just thought about her.
I read Zane's books, but I'm not sure they're "erotic". They seem like sexy "go-girl" books. Like Terry McMillan with a lot of sex scenes. That's jsut my take, but I love Zane books.

What is your opinion on this one: Vladimir Nabokov's "Lolita". I am not a sick nic. This is truly a work of art. When you read it you feel guilty about the eroticism, but you can't wait to read more. The complexity of the relationship is amazing (and ill).

I don't know about Lolita. Oddly enough, I have never read that or any of the other erotica listed here--though I have read what would qualify as porn--strictly for research purposes, of course!
The story sounds repulsive--but let me go check it out and report back--strictly for research purposes, of course! |

So far classics of black erotica only Tina Elroy Ansa and Kola Boof.

There has historically been much havoc, anathema and innuendo associated with African American sexuality (e.g., slave rape, massah's chillren, fear and resentment of the 'legendary' Black phallus, fear and resentment of Black men & White woman coupling, etc.) Therefore, for fear of being abused, castigated and disparaged, we Black people have smartly regulated/restricted any/all displays of our sexuality.
But Blacks can now more freely enjoy the broadening sexual freedom that is encompassing much of the 'free world'. And we feel more empowered to make that liberation apparent in our literature.
So now; thanks to a Sex In The City, breast/penile implants, 1/2 century of Playboy, Viagra, Chippendales, Dr. Ruth, video porn and thug rappers & video hoochies; we all can get BUCK WILD!

Hal Bennett's The Lord Of The Dark Places ,a late 60's early 70's novel that is definitely out of print, is an example of black erotica. Some of his other stories would classify as well. |
