I haven't read any of Omar Tyree's books since I tried to read For the Love of Money. I tried to read that twice and didn't get past the 3rd chapter. I had the same problem with Sweet St. Louis. Just curious, is The Other Woman worth the effort to read.

The Other Woman is by Eric Jerome Dickey. I enjoyed it. I read Omar's last book, The Diary of a Groupie and I hated it. I never give away books, even if I did not like it, but I left that on the train on purpose!!

I have to agree with you, Diary of a Groupie was not a good book. His best (in my opinion) is Leslie. There were some slow parts, but it was a very interesting read.

The man is total garbage and he has the nerve to try to be cocky. He has no skills. He should study the craft. Journalism major or not. He doesn't paint pictures I commend him for being prolific but when you have 1 out of 11 books being good. That's a horrible ratio. I don't usually dog people out like this but he has dogged others out in the past. EJD is a master craftsman. E Lynn Harris a craftsman. Carl Webber a great story teller. These in my opinion are the GREATS

Redbone,

I'll see if I can find it at the library or borrow it from someone. I don't think I'll purchase anything else by him.

Well, I guess the concensus so far is that the book was not a good read. The title caught my eye but after the last few books, I am a little skeptical of Omar Tyree. I think that his best was Capital City. I am a little biased because I am from the DC area and I related to and could remember a lot of the places and trends that he referred to. And "Anonymous" is right on with the great writers of the present.

Sarai,

I'm from the DC area as well. Is Capital City under his name or "The Urban Griot"? I've never heard of it. Have you read anything by Marcus Major? I really enjoyed Good Peoples and the sequel is in stores now, A Man Most Worthy.

Capital City is under his name. I think that full name is Capital City : Chronicles of a DC Underworld but, don't quote me. I have never read anything by Marcus Major. Who does his writing compare to?

I would have to say a combination of EJD and Carl Webber. His stories are mild mannered and romantic, not to much drama. I haven't read many male authors to compare him to though. I'm reading One Flesh by Clarence Major and I also picked up the The Erasure by Percival Everett. I going to try the male authors for a while.

I need to make a correction to an earlier post. The sequel to Good Peoples is A Family Affair. Sorry.

Here are a few AA male authors worth checking out. Haven't read Tyree, Weber or Dickey so I cannot speak on these authors but they seem to be very popular.

Glenville Lovell
Mat Johnson
Louis Edwards
Percival Everett
Colson Whitehead
C. Kelly Robinson
Guy Johnson
Edward Jones
Walter Mosley

I've enjoyed the writing of all of these men. Hope this helps.

I refuse to pick up another Omar Tyree book. After that horrible "For the Love of Money" which was a horrible sequel to "Fly Girl" and downright boring "Sweet St. Louis" I gave up on him for good. I don't know what happened to him. I liked "Do Right Man" and "Single Mom" was ok. I don't like the way he complains that no one takes his writing seriously and his huge ego.
Marcus Major's books are pretty good. Can't wait to read his latest. One of his other books "Four Guys and Trobule" has some drama in it.

Carl Weber's writing is good. It's full of life and excitement. This also true for Marcus Major. While reading his work, I can always picture the characters.
As for Omar Tyree, I will never buy another one of his books. I heard him in an interview and he is very cocky. My reasoning for buy Leslie is because its setting is in New Orleans and I am in love with that city and I wanted to see if Omar would really capture the mystery and excitement of the city.

OKay as long as everybody agrees that Omar Tyree is Garbage Garbage Garbage. Just plain trash. I commend him for writing thought its garbage at least he puts out books... I think they are books. Even thought they have no plot or characters aren't developed and the story lines are weak. Oh by the way did I mention that his books are garbage. Somebody bring the in the trash compactor. Peace

Though the thread changed, I'm going to jump in here. I LOVE Marcus Major's writing and am looking forward to his new book. I've read all of the previous ones and the thing I remember most is his humor.

I've never read a Tyree book and while I'm not necessarily a EJD fan, I did enjoy Between Lovers. I have only read three of his books, though I am reading Naughty or Nice now. I want to go back and read The Other Woman because it's one of the books for 2003 that made the biggest discussions in several of my online groups.

I have read all of Tyree's books and I think I am qualified to say they are all just....bla...blah..blah. Granted the covers are nice, but his work needs help!

I am a EJD fan and I can at least say that I have noticed how he has taken the time to study his craft and make his writing better every since Friends and Lovers.

I think that Frankin White wrote the best book out of both EJD and Omar in his latest Money For Good. His writing his quick to the point and makes you feel as though you are directly in the story. You have to read it to understand how good it is.

Tee, can you tell me more about your online group?

Toni: Tyree has written several books, and you say you've read them all, why would you continue to read an author's books if you thought that all of his previous works were "....bla...blah..blah"?I am just trying to understand why a person would buy an author's book #7, for example, if they thought books 1 to 6 by that same author needed help. TIA

Curious --your question is stunning. What are you saying? I shouldn't read books by our authors? For a time Tyree and a few others were the only authors really pushing books out on a regular basis and it was like "buy this" secondly the hype of the books were such that would make a reader give the author another chance--so I did. And I will probably buy the next one too.

I tell you this Curious, I bet I'm not the only one who has read all of his books and feel this way about Tyree's work. You tell me what should I do, not purchase another one? If that's the case-you'll probably have something to say about that too. In my opinion Tyree's books are still BLAH ...BLAH...........BLAH and I am waiting for him to prove otherwise.

First of all let me make it clear that I am not "Curious", but I do agree with him or her. Why should blacks blindly support authors who they don't like or admire just because they are black? Should we give up the right to be discriminating when it comes to quality??

Thank you Cynique. This Toni person seems a little short of a dozen to me.

I could never keep buying books from an author that has consistently disappointed me.

I agree Book Father and Cynique, this simply makes NO sense. You Cyninue and I should write a book and make sure the cover looks nice, we know one individual that will gobble it right up.

They asked what should they do stop buying his books....ahhh... yeah... duh.

Cynique-You have it all wrong I didn't blindly select his novels. I am an avid reader and read just about everything on the shelves. So my purchase wasnt because he is a black author it's because somehow the storylines initially appealled to me--which isn't what happens after I began reading. After you open his books you are somehow without warning put in a state of (boredom) reading the BLAH...BLAH....BLAH preachy dialog and narrative that doesnt work with the characters. And I have read all of them -every last one. So it's not about being disgriminating it's about the author delivering to the reader what he states the book is about.

As for you Book Father-I will call you grandfather tonight because don't you think I kept my receipts after the first few let downs? Duhhhh....And yes the books went right back to the store---after I realized it was another Omar Tyree let down....so who is a short of a dozen now.

Carey, I will still purchase his next book and if I don't like it....it's going back with the rest of them..

So, Toni, are saying that you like Omar Tyree, "warts and all"? You're allowed.
BTW, you could save yourself some money by checking his books out of the library.

Dag, it is pretty rough in here. But, I have to agree with the rest. Because of the let down of Sweet St. Louis and For the Love of Money, I would never go buy another Omar Tyree book. I have only purchased one anyway. I would not go through the effort of buying and returning a book if they did not interest me. I would also suggest to go to the library.
