I thought the characters were well developed and the theme relevant to the time period for which it was written. I was left with a few questions about Rozelle, the mother. I don't want to give too much information away since the book hasn't been released. I just didn't get "the source" of all the hatred and anger. She was soooooooo evil! Overall, the book was wonderful. I'd love to read more from this author.

Hey Anita, and thanks for the feedback. I've heard both good and bad about this book, but it's still on my list. I'll let you know when (if) I get to it. I'm kinda in a slump now, not really in a reading mood, but I hope to break out of it by the weekend.

If you start reading you won't stop. Phillips drew me in and I didn't want to stop until the end.

Let's discuss it when you're done reading the book.

They tried to make the mama evil because she was the lightskinned person and the daughter the "darkest" one.

It's the new trend I notice to demonize us yellow girls and make us seem like enemies of the black race or something.

I think it's trifling and gett'n on my nerves, frankly.

OH WELL

(and that girl on that book cover is OOOUUUUGLY-fied ugly!!) But that's posed to be my fault.

Shaking my head

Wow Cynnara. I didn't quite view it that way. I think an equal mixture of ugliness amongst all skin colors was prevalent in the book. The whites were evil, Tangie's dark father was evil, and Rozelle's mother was more manipulative than evil.

Please tell me some other books that display the demonizing trend.
