Hey Folks,

I was just putting together an end of the year book list and I was surprised at how many mystery titles I read and enjoyed this year. This list also included non-AA writers which might be why the numbers differ from last year. Thus, the surprise.

Anyway, who are some of your fav AA mystery writers? Maybe you people are hip to writers I don't yet know about.

Here are mine. . . no special order. . .

1) Grace Edwards
2) Charlotte Carter
3) Walter Mosley
4) Terris McMahon Grimes
5) Glenville Lovell (one mystery title only)
6) Gar Anthony Haywood
7) Louis Edwards (one mystery title only)

Let me know your favs.

Bayou

I found this book back in September in the bargain bin by Julie Smith and it was a who-dunnit with a Black female character that wasn't too bad. Louisiana Hotshot was the title; so I ordered the sequel; Louisiana Bigshot (bought it used;for a dollar online) and it wasn't too bad either. I rather enjoyed the character, Talba who is a AA poet/private eye.

What surprised me is that the author is a white woman who has written several who-dunits (winning several book awards). Although I prefer Valerie Wilson Wesley; Julie Smith was not too bad. LOL

What do you think about white authors with Black protagonists?

I read the Talba series and didn't care for it at all. I do love the other Julie Smith mysteries, and the whole New Orleans angle but Talba just didn't grab me.

Gar Anthony Haywood had also started a series about an AA retired couple travelling the country in their land cruiser and the crimes or incidents they encountered and tried to solve while visiting their adult children. They were good, humorous stories.

Valerie Wilson Wesley, Barbara Neely,Paula Woods, Gary Hardwick, Christopher Chambers, Sterling Anthony. By the way, I read Louisiana Hotshot and it was ok but not good enough for me to continue reading the series.

What does everyone think of Paula Woods? I read Inner City Blues a while back and I liked her writing, but thought the story was too long, it could have been tightened up some.

Without a doubt, Too Beautiful to Die by Glenville Lovell. I would also say Keith Lee Johnson though he may fall more into the thriller/suspense genre, but his books hold a bit of mystery too.

I really like Paula Woods. I agree that Inner City Blues did need some tighting up. Her other books Stormy Weather and the newest Dirty Laundry are better books. The plots and the characters are more focused. I like Eleanor Taylor Bland too.

Thanks Radiah. I read one ETB book, I cannot remember the title. There were some kids hiding in an abandoned building and one of them witnessed a murder. It was good. I will give the other Paula Woods book a try then.
