Well, chris,

At least she's speaking up about it and not just going with the flow.

A_woman:

She is going with the flow. The studios got it and gone.

What is more telling is--have you heard any protest about this from the fans? The silence is defeaning.

They would do this again tomorrow. And if they would do it to her, what would they do to somebody just starting out?

I have been having a long discussion about this on a list primarily devoted to lovers of speculative fiction--fantasy, sci fi, etc.

I have stated that one solution--maybe THE solution--is to write things to a black market that has proven to be robust and healthy.

Would they have turned the characters of Waiting to Exhale white? Hell no, because the fans of the book, primarily black women, would have raised hell.

But the audience for sci fi and fantasy is primarily suburban adolescent white males. The producers of the book had their eye on the ratings--I wasn't going to tune into it--in fact this was the first time I had ever heard that the characters were not white--

I have stated to the black sci fi and fantasy writers that, unless they want to write Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter knockoffs, they should write works that appeal to the already proven market of black women.

For reasons that do not make sense, they are resisting this idea

Chris,

Don't you think her even speaking about what she wanted and not what is is a step in the right direction? The same thing happened with stephen king's book The Shining.

He has said that at the time there wasn't much he could do about the powers that be making his lead character into a crazed maniac who developed a lust for murder---even his own family, when the book was not like that. And it wasn't until some 20 years later that he was able to remake the movie(for a tv mini-series this time) into one that more closely reflected his vision.

By the way, I still haven't received my advanced copy of your book, but I also check my credit card and noticed that I haven't been charged for the book yet either. How can I find out what's going on? I don't want to charge another book and then have the charge for my original purchase show up later.

And Chris,
Do you plan on marketing your book too, or are you just going to leave it to the publisher? Are you going to create your own website with your works or what?
