Hey Chris, one of my favorites is Thunderland by Brandon Massey! I can't get through a storm without thinking of his book and the line between reality and our dreams. It's one of those books that you SEE when you read and yep, it scared the hell outta me.

I'm not a big horror book lover. The closest I've gotten to horror is Tananarive Due. I absolutely looooooooove her.
If you or anyone else can recommend a good horror piece - I'll fetch it from my local library.

I don't read much horror, so the closest I can come is Jewel Parker Rhodes' VooDoo Dreams. I like supernatural voodoo stuff. Even Gloria Naylor's Mama Day has that supernatural air. And, of course, I have to include my favorite book, Toni Morrison's Beloved. |

Yes, Candyman was kinda generic but Chris wanted African American examples. Stephen King is probably everybody's favorite horror writer. |

Although maybe more sci-fi than horror, I like Octavia Butler. The reality of Kindred [being transported to slavery times without warning] would be a horror story for me. And Lilith's Brood has some scary stuff in it too - but man, what a sensual story that is - all that touching and stuff. |

I'm glad you folks are giving some examples so I can check these books out. Writers of black horror are not that plentiful. |

You are right Cynique! Horror has always been my favorite, yet I can't think of anything by an AA in that genre that I may have read. I must pay closer attention to this detail. I want to support my brothers and sisters as much as possible and I feel ashamed that I overlooked this area. |

Hello All,
Good question Chris. Naturally I have a couple of books, both are short story collections:
1.) Havoc After Dark by Robert Fleming
2.) Dark Corners edited by Brandon Massey
Both collections are excellent and each contained stories that if they didn't flat out frightened me, gave a minute or two to pause. |

Tananarive Due is quite good as well! I read The Living Blood cause I had to write a review a few years ago, and she told me that her first one (name escapes me) is going to be a movie with Blair Underwood as the lead.
The Good House is her latest, I may pick it up at some point, though I am generally not a speculative/horror reader.

Where you been, Thumper? Are you glad Chris got us back on the book track? I'll be a lot of people are. I'm reading Walter Mosley's latest EZ Rawlins book and kinda liking it. I think Moslely should try his hand at the horror genre. Yes, his sci-fi experiment was a dud but I think he has grown since then and could probably write something that would provide his readers with a few chills. |

A Vampyre Blues is not straight up horror like Lovecraft or Poe or King
Mine is an African American story with an African American hero--it is a gumbo like all our arts. It will scare you in parts, make you laugh in parts, make you sad in parts, make you glad in parts, make you scratch your head in parts, make you go "Aw crap in parts"
If you like those kinds of goin's on you will like it. |
