Hello All,
Yeah, I'm back on the good side now. *big smile* I haven't been doing a lot of reading lately because I've recently got a promotion on the job, so now although I'm still broke, I don't get as broke as fast. *smile* I was fooling around on the Culture board because fussing and getting the best of some people don't really tax my brain power.
I had recently finished The Angel of Harlem by Kuwana Hausley (sp), excellent excellent book. As wonderful as The Angel of Harlem is, I couldn't wait to finish it because last week a book on the greatest R&B album of all times came across my desk.
I Never Loved a Man the Way I Loved You : Aretha Franklin, Respect, and the Creation of a Soul Music Masterpiece by Matt Dobkin; I love this damn book!! As you all know Aretha Franklin is my favorite singer of all times, and this book tells of the making of her first Atlantic album that let the world know that the Queen has finally arrived. I Never Loved A Man happens to be the album that I fell in love with Aretha. It is a very interesting, smooth flowing book. It's due out in November so put it on your list. Especially you A_womon. I can tell from the artists you say you like, *eyebrow raised* you sittin' in the dark with your hands over your ears that you have a hard time knowing what real music is. Ain't no need in getting huffy honey, just go ahead and get it. *smile* I would send you one of my copies, but I'm sending one of my spare copies to Carey cause he ain't got it either. *smile*

HHhahhahaha! Right Thumper, If you really want me to get "ARETHAnized" you will go ahead and send me a copy too. Didn't you say you got extra "copies"? That means more than one. Besides, Carey probably got waaaaaaaaaaay more money than me, so he could afford to buy one!  |

Aretha Franklin. To me she was the apotheosis--but that was my era and Soul was my music and I grew up in the church so, though Ella and Sarah might have her on technicality and Billie had her with the blues--no need to bring up anybody after her, Whitney, Chaka, Natalie (she damn near hurt herself trying to get Aretha)none of them could BLOW like dat gal. I love Otis Reddings' version of Respect (he did write it and record it first--it was supposed to be a MAIN talkin' to his WOMAN) like he said "That girl just took this song--but I'm gonna sing it anyway" and do you know why she was so good?
You'd be listening and you say, dammit, she singin' to ME!
By the way Columbia records didn't know what to do with her, had her singing a bunch of crap and damn near got her buried--I'm gonna get that book. |

I'm putting this book on my reading list cuz y'all know I love biographies, and from all reports, Aretha has had a particularly interesting life. "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" is the Aretha song that does it for me. And let's not overlook what a great pianist Ree-Ree is. |

I don't usually like bios but I may have to check this one out. I remember Aretha's concerts - fabulous. 2nd only to Marvin [and maybe James]. A couple of weeks ago she had a concert here at the outdoors Greek Theatre, one of her old venues. I missed it but was told she still puts on a good show

Hi Thumper,
I love Aretha! After her new album came out, I went out and bought her greatest hits. My favorites on this cd are "Fool for ya!" "Daydreaming" and a song, i'm not sure about the name, but it's old and i have never heard of it, but it goes "Can you feel the spirit...can you feel it in the dark.." has a gospel and funky feel. I can't wait till she comes to my town so I can see her in concert. Aretha is the Queen! |

Hmmm, I just bypassed this book Thumper, but you do make it sound good. I'll have to buy it when it comes out as someone else already selected it to review. I'm not very big on bios and books of this nature.
Cynique, did you check out Lisa Price's book??
