Hello AALBCers--

My name is Felicia Pride, the founder/editor of BackList (www.thebacklist.net), a monthly publishing and literary newsletter of African-American interest. No, it isn't in the tradition of AALBC (so we aren't the competition). BackList is along the lines of a magazine. Each issue contains interviews with authors/publishing professionals, book commentary, publishing news, new book releases and literary announcements. We try to focus on those books, authors, and issues that don't receive the shine they deserve--so I guess in that sense we are similar to AALBC.com.

Although the newsletter has been around since March, the website was just redesigned. The October issue, which coincides with the website re-launch, focuses on the connection between music and literature. A joint interview with hip-hop scholars Mark Anthony Neal and Gwen Pough looks at the bond between hip-hop and literary contexts. Black Artemis, author of Explicit Content discusses the bona fide hip-hop novel, while a publishing profile of former Vibe executive editor, Orlando Lima, communicates what can be learned from jazz and literature. A review of Kenji Jasper’s Seeking Salamanca Mitchell and a tour of Carl Hancock Rux’s website round out the issue.

The next issue will include interviews with versatile writer, Robert Fleming, poet Opal Moore and political activist/author Yvonne Bynoe.

To tell you about myself, I am a graduate student in writing and publishing. I started BackList after realizing the importance of publishing as a cultural gatekeeper (read: sitting in class and publishing houses and realizing that there weren’t any other people of color making the crucial decisions of what does and doesn’t get discussed, published, or promoted). BackList is still finding its way, so to speak, but so far, feedback within the industry has been positive and encouraging as if we are providing a highly welcomed platform.

So, if you get an opportunity, please check it out, subscribe, and tell your friends.

Until,

Felicia

Hi Felicia:

Thanks fo rthe information. I'll meantion Backlist in our next eNewsletter (get ready for the surge in traffic!).

Regarding competition: this is not "Highlander" where "There Can Be Only One". We need more web sites doing things with Black Literature, not less. Besides competition forces everyone to step up.

Thanks for the link from your web site!

Thanks for the support, Troy. I truly appreciate it.

I just didn't want you to think I was using your boards to promote a similar service. That isn't right!
