Okay - I'm half way through Diva's Inc - a chick lit book by Donna Hill ---- cute is the operative word here -- in fact very cute - cotton-candyish cute -- do u get where I'm going here? In 200 pages there was may be one curse word. There's been no sex and no tongue kissing whatsoever --it's a very "decent" book. Now I havent read all of the other so called "Black-Chick-Lit" books out there (and doubt that I will) but I feel from this experience that there is a difference between the two genres. Sister Girl books are faster paced, raw in some respects and raunchy in others. Dare I say, closer to real life than the peptobismol, pink fantasy of chicklit? Shoot, even Bridget Jones got laid and tossed a few cuss words around. |

Hello all,
Bimsha: Truthfully, I can't tell the difference in story or intent between the U go girl and Black Chick Lit books. The only real difference is the motive behind the books. As the article pointed out, the black women authors behind this new Black Chick Lit wave motive for writing these insipid books are that they wanted to prove that black women can be aneroxic and sexual frustrated as the white women on Sex In The City. Talk about a goal to aspire to. *rolling my eyes* Is it me, or am I the only one slightly ticked off that despite the Civil Rights Movement, etc., there are still many of us; especially the so called educated, sophisticated, upperly mobile black folks still believe that the white man's ice is colder. How freaking STUPID! I'm sorry but these black women authors who want to specialize in this type of books can lead you all down the primrose path, but they are going to have to drag this big ol' butt of mine down that bricked sidewalk kicking and screaming |

It seems that black people are really just regular ol' people...their blackness does not shield them from vanity. It seems, like the DC Assassin, black folk are just like white folk...people...Can we still say, "Only white people do that sh%t"? |

Hello All,
Yukio: I don't know if its entirely vanity. I think that would be the most obvious explanation. But to me it seems to be another form of self hatred. I don't have a problem with anyone liking anything because of their own personal taste, i.e. cars, clothes, electronics, etc. But if their reason for liking and obtaining things is because they see a white person in it, driving it, wearing it, and therefore it must be good; I have to believe that that person is suffering from self hatred. |
