Hello All,
One of the joys I had at the BEA was having the graphic novel of Daddy Cool by Donald Goines tossed in my lap! I'm reading it now. Although I would have preferred the illustrations were in color instead of black and white, I have to say that I'm loving it.

Thumper that is one of fgavorite books from the norton old school books.Well actually portrait of a young man drowning is my favorite from the norton books.My favorite Donald Goines book is black girl lost.Thumper I belive alot of those norton books would get the younger kids to read.When I was younger I remember falling in love with the written word by reading the Goines,Iceberg Slims etc. |

Hello All,
SOA: I have to agree with you about the Norton's Old School Books. I think a lot of the young people that are buying these so called hip hop books would really enjoy the OSBs. I love Portrait of a Young Man Drowning as well! It's an excellent book.
I hate that the OSBs are out of print. I think Marc Gerald and his partner (his name escapes me now I mean no disrespect) was ahead of their time when they started this series for Norton. Now, it's hard as hell to get your hands on any of these copies. I hate that too! I recently tried to buy a few of them and was not able to.
I encourage anyone who is interested in this genre to check these books out, for not only are the stories good; but it will also bring awareness to these unheralded authors who are still unknown. While it is true that Goines and Slim are now the most popular authors, it is important to note that they were not the only ones. Since I have you all ears, how many of you know that Holloway House, the publisher that originally published Slim and Goines, is still in business and have a goo gob number of books written in this same genre? I'll drop by later with some links and jpegs of some titles. |

Thumper I had to dig out my old school books and the other guy is Samuel Blumenfeld.I agree with you in that they were ahead of their time.I read some of these books as a kid and when I got older I reordered some of the ones I had misplaced.Like mama black widow.When I was younger me and my sister read that book and I never forgot it.I couldnt even remember the name for along time.And I would ask everyone I knew that read alot.Thats just how much this book stayed with me.I finally found out the title and reordered it.Anyway I have to admit I didnt know that holloway is still in business.I'd like to get those links so I could check some of those books out.Thanks for the info. |

I know most of you like to shop at AA bookstores, but just a word for anyone who cares. I picked up
Daddy Cool yesterday at Barnes and Noble for $6.99. They had a huge collection of Goines and Iceberg slim in the fiction section. I kind of thought that was strange that they had these authors mixxed in with the other Fiction writers, yet they have a separate AA section...I don't know if that's good or bad. I don't care. I'm just glad that I found this book that I had lost as a teenager and am able to pass it on to my teen and get her head out of the 'go-girl' crap long enough to give her some good wholesome drug dealing and violence. <wink> I don't know why I prefer one to the other, I just do. Maybe one of you intellectual types can offer some insight. I don't want to turn her off from reading, I just want to offer her some variety. Something that she can read on her own and enjoy without feeling like its being pushed on her. |

I would think that any young person who has a hip-hop mentality would be very compatiable with reading Donald Goines' books. And intellectualizing Donald Goines is not that hard either because his books are known to make make good reading supplements for college courses in Sociology. |

Well, lambd, in answer to your question, I would venture to say that maybe these books qualify more as "noir" fiction than African Acmerican fiction. |

I just clicked on that link Thumper sent for the holloway books.I like that site I ordered 10 old school books for the 10 dollar special.Has any one else checked this out and got any of those books yet? |
