Hey Guys,
I'm doing a bit of research and I need you to put me up on AA gay and lesbian authors or if you know of a good anthology. So far I have:

Thomas Glave
J. Baldwin
Bruce Nugent- his stuff is hard to find so if you can name some titles it would be great.

AKA-all of the above.
Looking for works fiction and non that address the experience and identity issues. I'm aware of authors like Harris and Hardy looking for stuff with a little more meat than that. |

Klb: The link Chris provided is an excellent start. As far as Bruce Nugent goes, last year (or the year before last) an anthology of his writing was published. It's called The Gay Rebel of the Harlem Renaissance. Excellent book. Here's the info:

You may also want to check out Stephen Delany.
He is a gay African-American writer who mainly
writes sci-fi/spec fiction. I recommend
Dhalgren. |

That's Samuel R. Delaney. Dhalgren is the last book of his I would recommend for anybody.
I would recommend his autobiography (The Motion of Light in Water) where he talks about being gay in New York in the 1960's |

I don't know where I came up with Stephen, I was thinking too fast, I do know his name though. Anyway, I liked Dhalgren, but maybe that's because I have an affinity for Sci Fi/Spec. So, I feel confident in recommending the title although I do agree that his autobiography would also be a great book to read.

This is not your doing, it is Delaney's but other than stating that the book takes place on a planet Bellona with two suns, there is hardly a speck of Spec fiction in it. It is an fictionalization of his experiences in the counterculture, especially in New York presented in agonizing detail. I used to think it was an incomprehensible mess (years ago many Sci Fi fans used to ask each other, how far did you get?)
I recently revisited it (I can't say you read it--one of it's graces is that you can pick it up and start reading anywhere and just read until you get tired--which with me happens after about 150 pages), and though I understood what was going on better, I kept saying, "What is the point of all this?"
The point was there was no point, which we were supposed to see as Delany's genius. He wrote good stuff before that and afterward, but I think with Dhalgren he just decided to cut loose and see where he would go.
Nothing wrong with that. If I was going to recommend some Delaney I'd recommend his book of short stories (DriftGlass) or his earlier works. |

Okay, so are we recommending Dhalgren? Sounds interesting.
Didn't know that Sapphire was gay or wrote gay literature. Now we have to be careful about rumors. Langston Hughes is sometimes mentioned as being gay, but has never admitted to such in his life. I visualize him as Prince now....the rumors and little quirks. Then he shows up with women from all walks of life.
Okay, just what I needed, more books and stuff to check out.
Just doing a google search turned up all kind of links. Chris you are one well read brother!! MAN! |

Funny how things turn out. I read one of ELH's books(so that I might have an open-minded opinion) and I read a snippet of Ric Rollins' stuff.
The verdict--Rollins can write cirles around ELH. No, change that. Rollins can writer hemispheric orbits around ELH. Alas, ELH got to the party first so he gets his dance card filled and Rollins is a wallflower that no one will even give a cup of watered-down punch to. It's all about timing.
However, this is only my opinion and others may disagree.
