Hey Y'all I got this email a few moments ago, but could not recommend something that I'd read recently. I was hoping I could get some reccomendations here.

Peace,

Dear Troy,

My book club is looking for books by black authors that are humorous, light, funny. We are turning to you for advice. What do you suggest?

Just a suggestion but with the holidays coming up you might care to mention Ish Reed's Santa Claus novel, "The Terrible Twos," which is both hilarious and "light" (unless, of course, one views the 1980 Ronald Reagan inauguration/ Ebeneezer Scrooge connection as out-of-bounds for literary satire. The novel's basis is apparently some recondite information about the historical Saint Nicholas who may have been Turkish, may have been the patron saint of prostitutes, and was actually demoted in the Catholic hierarchy sometime during the 1960s.

Here's an excerpt from John Leonard's 1982 review in the NY Times:

Among the 80,000 things that happen in Ishmael Reed's wild new novel, the President of the United States, a male model with the name Dean Clift, visits hell in an elevator with St. Nicholas. On various levels of this hell, the President meets Dwight D. Eisenhower, who is haunted by the murder of Patrice Lumumba; Harry S Truman, who is haunted by Hiroshima; and Nelson A. Rockefeller, who is haunted by Attica.

Does this seem a little heavy-handed? Not at all. Of course, ''The Terrible Twos'' refers not only to greedy 2-year-olds but also to our bicentennial as a nation as well. Dean Clift -an elaborate joke I won't explain -leaves the White House, ''a house of slaveholders, Indian killers, apartheid advocates, crypto-Ku Kluxers, and other eminent landlord types,'' for a Holiday Inn to write his own speech for the first time.

Meanwhile, Santa Claus, an actor hired by the North Pole Development Corporation, which owns all the rights to Christmas, is kidnapped. A fake Santa Claus, who may or may not be the real St. Nicholas and seems to be under the control of a bellboy named Black Peter, calls off Christmas on account of greed. Various television personalities, plutocrats and pimps are in on the action. So is a private detective, Nance Saturday, and a good-looking journalist, Jamaica Queens. There are also several important trees.

Hey Troy,

Finding a good humor book by AA authors is indeed a rare find. The last one I read was Cedric The Entertainer's "Grown Ass Man" excluding my own book "A Job Ain't Nothing But Work: Confessions of a Corporate Negro." Cedric's book was pretty funny too. I've heard good things about the latest books from Wanda Sykes (Yeah, I Said It) and Monique (Skinny Women Are Evil).

I don't think there's much demand for humor books, especially from non-celebs.

Troy,

I'm glad you're enjoying my debut novel "Where is the Love?". Although it doesn't hit brick and mortar stores until February, advanced copies are now being sold on Amazon.com, BN.com, and Bamm.com. I sent you an e-mail.

I recommend "Keeping Up With The Jones: marriage family and life ... unplugged" by me - Solomon Jones. The book is laugh-out-loud funny and all the stories are true ... well, except the one about Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones being my cousin.

The other book I would recommend is "The Broke Diaries" by Angela Nissel. It's hilarious.
