Hello All,
Well Crystal, you know that I'm Dickey's biggest fan. I love his books. Of course over time, there are a few of his books that I like more than others, but overall, I've been more than please with Dickey and his novels. You wanted to know what I though of Genevieve, so here it is:
What kind of shiiiii-IT is THIS!! Uh-uh, Dickey got me BENT! I mean, come the f_ck on here for a minute. The male character is as weak as sugar water left out in the sun, with his sexual addicted ass. Genevieve was quite a mystery, not because of the type of character she was, but because Dickey didn't bother to fully develop her. And the Kenya character, what a waste of paper, time and ink. The Kenya character is like a wad of used toilet paper that nobody has flushed yet.
The novel doesn't know what it is or what it wants to be. First, I got the impression that Dickey was writing a novel with the same tone of Rebecca by Daphne Du Murier (sp). Then with all of those long drawn out sex-capade episodes, which were DOA before I picked the book up to read; I wanted to tell Dickey to leave this type of stuff to Zane. Once I read the ending, I shouted, this book reads like a literary version of a CD that should be titled Eric Jerome Dickey: 20 Greatest Hits.
First the un-named male character narrator, and his silly ass obsession with sex; confusing it with intimacy, reeks of Dickey's The Other Woman. Then Dickey's racial revelations coming at the end of the book and that the real confrontation of the characters happens at the end of the book is almost identical to his Milk In My Coffee novel.
Dickey has one of the best ear for dialogue in the business. I don't know of any author black or white that can capture a conversation between characters, staying true to the characters, as Dickey. On that score, Dickey is in a class by himself. In this novel, he used his gift to smoke screen the fact that he did not bother to deliver a full novel. I felt used and that he took me for Boo Boo the Damn Fool. I assure you, I am not that, not by a long shot.
The ending should have been the heart and soul of the novel. Genevieve's husband was totally unnecessary. If Genevieve the novel had been centered on Genevieve's past, and her family history, Dickey would have had a sho nuff winner. Instead of being the novel of a family drama, I got heated up, overcooked pasta with dried out sauce on it. I aint happy. Maybe its time for Dickey to take a 2 or 3 year break. Rest up, and then come back.

I find EJD's novel's to be hit and miss. Some I love and can't put down, and others I can't find my way to the end. I'll pass on this one too. |
