Hi Everyone,
I don't usually do many autobiographies, but I ran into this one and purchased it because it was written by Jasmine Guy (ex-Whitley). It is a series of poignant conversations between Jasmine and Afeni Shakur (ex-Black Panther and Tupac's mom) about her life, growing up, serving in the Black Panther Party, her jail time, drug abuse, which I found to be very interesting and oftentimes entertaining. Jasmine tells a story like an old southerner and I liked it. Although I came away knowing quite a bit about Afeni Shakur, I also felt I come to know Jasmine Guy a lot better, aside from being Whitley. Kudo's to Jasmine and Afeni. |

Sisg,
No disrespect intended towards Afeni, Jasmine or you. But there have been many others involved in assorted Black nationalism movements. And usually it has been pretty clear why a few of them ascended into the spotlight.
But I've yet to divine WHY I should be particularly interested in Afeni OTHER than because she's the late/great Tupac's mother.
Can you provide a persuasive sampling of why one should be interested in her sans Tupac? If so, that might inspire me (and others) to consider reading "Afeni Shakur: Evolution of a Revolutionary." |

Sisgal, I don't know how more specific you could get in your assessment of this book that you have recommended. It sounds like it would be a worth while read if for no other reason than it's the anatomy of a black women during the black militancy era of the 60s. I suspect it would also be an expose of what male chauvinists the Black Panthers were. |

I know her history and her story--before and including the circumstances of the birth of Tupac Shakur, are a gripping story in themselves.
But I ain't gonna tell ya about it, comicbook boy! Ya gonna have to google it up yourself!

You know what ABM, I simply mentioned the book because I found it interesting that Jasmine Guy would author such a book, and then number two, I for one had no prior knowledge of who Afeni Shakur is or was to the Black Panther Party and their movement, aside from being Tupac's mother. So, if that's the kind of story that interests you, buy it, borrow it, read it. If not, so be it. No skin off my back.

I was hoping for a smidgen of something that might a potential reader might find compelling enough to want to read.
I (like most us I suppose) have a couple books on reading backlog. So I kinda like to get a little taste of a book to help determine if it's worth the extra trouble.
And I've alread read Michael Eric Dyson's Tupac bio "Holla If You Hear Me". So I'm already familar with Afeni via her son's story.
I was just hoping to here/read something discrete from her son.
But I guess you think the lure of the book is it was written by Guy. If that's the case, that's cool too.

ABM,
the lure of the book for ME, was that it was written by Guy. bc first thing I thought was hey, J Guy writes books???? and then, the topic, Afeni Shakur. I checked it out at Amazon, read a few pages from "look inside the book", and actually enjoyed the way she told her story. Maybe I was expecting her to be that bratty, southern spitfire of tv land, and what I got was something a bit soulful, and more endearing, along with a interesting foray into AFeni Shakur's life and battles. I guess I was most amazed by these two women and their relationship. Two women from opposite sides of the street and yet they bonded in a very beautiful way. Okay, I must admit I had somewhat of a personal interest in this book, but I'll save that for another time.

I find it interesting that you totally ignored #2. Just wondering how people read things, and then come to a conclusion based on half of what's they read.
I read the book too, for all the reasons she mentioned, and a few more, I also enjoyed the book. As she also said, you'll learn a bit about Jasmine, thought it's a book about Afeni. I could see myself sitting out on Afeni's back porch, on the outskirts of Atlanta, as they had, while she was gathering information for the book. It also help me to understand more about Tupac. |

Okay. Maybe this is just me.
But if some asked ME why I should read a book I'd like do some combination of the following:
@ Quote some interesting/compelling passage from the book.
@ Mention something about Afeni that I feel the average person might be unacquainted with.
@ Note something unique about its author, which, btw, is what Sisg did.
@ Compare/contrast it with similar reputable books.
Those are amongst what I'D consider doing. |

Most of what Sisg mentioned, I didn't know either -- Jasmine being an writer, the depth of Jasmine and Afeni's relationship, the extent of Afeni's drug use/abuse, Afeni's childhood.
