Website of my homeskillet director, producer and writer Reggie Hudlin

http://www.hudlinentertainment.com/

He is writing "The Black Panther" for Marvel Comics.

Did you know some have attacked his work as racist? What do y'all think?

Chris,

WOW! I didn't know your homebody was writing THE BLACK PANTHER!

DANG!

It's been a while since I've read a BP comic. But I guess now I'll give it a gander.

Thanks!

Obviously Marvel comics or somebody needs to get on the stick or change their publicity practices.(I knew about it, but I lurk around such places, looking for heretics to condemn-hehheh)

Do you think a lot more black people would be interested in this book? What would you suggest they do/should have done?

Wow! Neat site. I remember when he and his bro did the House Party movie. I also remember meeting and hanging out with his brother, back in the day we he was showing his indepedent films at college. Warrington Hudlin was his name. Nice guy, funny too! Back to y'all later, I'm going to read some more on his site...

Chris,

I do think that part of the reason why comics books have seldom caught on amongst Blacks is they've seldom been written by Black authors. Someone with Hudlin's talents and notoriety should provide a big boost in that regard.

You didn't even know he was writing it and they are on Issue #4.

Now this is not YOUR fault. Marvel, after all, ain't giving the books away. And you are not a ravening fanboy who camps out in front of a comic shop every day. Marvel is dropping the ball. How? And how could they fix it?

Chris,

Good question. Maybe if Marvel passes out free copies of Black Pather at schools with high Black student populations might that will not only attract interesting amongst the students but perhaps their older siblings and parents as well. And working Hudlin's hollywood background in their PR scheme might boost interest in BP.

There you go again wanting to infect the schools with this trash. Schools should not be in the business of telling kids to read trash--and let me say that at one time my comic book collection was probably bigger than yours and now and then I still read reprints of the Silver Age comics I read--

It is trash. Fun trash. Entertaining trash. Harmless trash. Trash nonetheless. Schools and parents don't have to urge the kids to read it, nor should they.

As a parent, would you advocate that the Twinkies people hand out twinkies at schools?

Since Marvel is a moneymaking enterprise , I don't look for them to start passing out free copies of anything.

I would look for them to advertise The Black Panther on sites like this or some hiphop site--

Lots of Black folk are closet comic geeks. LOL

Like my husband. I recently bought him "Truth: Red, White and Black" (also Marvel). Very good--even I liked that one.

Anyway, thanks for the tip. Maybe I'll get him this one for Fathers' Day...

Chris, regarding your question I definitely think advertising here would help. Also, on popular Black blogs like Afro-Netizen, Negrophile, etc. (Lots of Black techno-geeks are also comic book geeks.)

I told my mister about this. Well, turns out he is well aware of this character. He wasn't one of his favorites, though. He said from what he remembers the BP didn't have any special powers or even lots of gimicks and gizmos and mostly was kind of a "mop up" superhero who took care of the henchmen while the main superhero took care of the archvillian.

Is this racist travesty corrected in Hudlin's version? I certainly hope so! LOL!

'Vette,

You provide an good explanation for why BP and other Black comic characters have seldom enjoyed popularity: They don't have the cool abilities the other characters typically have.

BP is interesting no so much because of his abilities but because he's a brillant African monarch and scientist. He usually defeats his adversaries via out-thinking them, not pulverizing them. And although the brainy stuff is cool, most comic fans wanna see some exciting, colorful @$$kicking.

Black Panther #4: Marvel will not get another dollar from me.
With issue #4 the invasion of Wakanda has begun, and not being content with alienating right-leaning readers with his Mad Magazine level parodies of the Bush administration, and white people in general by portraying them all as moronic racists, Mr. Hudlin had now gone for the Christians as well with his mean-spirited and condescending portrayal of the Black Knight as a Christian nutjob. Congrats, you got the trifecta.

After finishing Black Panther #4 it has become painfully clear to me that this book serves no other purpose than to be a rickety soapbox for Mr. Hudlin to spew forth his political "insights" and to childishly sling mud at those not deemed as "enlightened" as he is. You have had some bad experiences with white people in the past. We get it. You voted for Kerry in November and are pissed that you didn't get your way. We get it. You think Christians are idiots and suckers. We get it. You have all the subtlety of a fucking nuke. Instead of using these characters to create a rich, layered world into which readers can escape, you have instead chosen to use this classic character with his complex history to demean, alienate and insult those that are different from you in both their race, religion, and politics. Where I come from that's called bigotry, Mr. Hudlin, and I don't support bigots.

Yes, I read the letter where you so poorly attempted to turn the tables on the reader who accused you of the same racism I do by saying it "says more about you than it does about me", adding that you had black warriors attempting to invade in issue #1 so you're an equal opportunity offender. Classic backpedaling. The difference is, those warriors were not portrayed as doddering, mean-spirited, racist, and down right evil monsters as all white characters have been thus far in your run. Sorry, Mr. Hudlin, but this reveals more about, yes, *you* than it does anyone else because your childish stereotypes are so blatant, so heavy-handed that they are unmistakable. All one need do is rent House Party (1 & 2, both written by Mr. Hudlin) to see this man's opinions about white people laid bare. They are portrayed on film exactly as they are in Black Panther. Christ, even the most racist assholes I've had the displeasure of coming into contact with have had the common sense not to use the phrase "Jungle Bunny" in the same room as a black woman. I also read the part where you said that Stan Lee used comics to get his political ideas out there and laughed out loud at that. First, you're no Stan Lee, pal, so avoid the comparison because you'll only embarass yourself further. Second, Stan Lee did get his message out there, but he did it using something called m-e-t-a-p-h-o-r and w-i-t. What you do in Black Panther amounts to nothing more than mean-spirited name-calling. Impressive that the petty little racist got himself a Marvel-branded megaphone, eh? Don't make that comparison again, because there is no comparison. Your writing has all the depth of a Spy Vs. Spy strip, and sadly the exact same point of conflict: Black vs. White. At least Mad Magazine left it up to the readers who to root for.

Upon finishing this hideous drivel, I actually had to re-read it because I couldn't believe that Marvel, a company I have been loyal to for close to 20 years now would publish such narrow-minded, divisive, racist garbage under it's bannerhead. But they did, and until Mr. Hudlin is no longer being published by Marvel Comics, I will no longer be purchasing Marvel Comics because I do not support racists and bigots or the companies that push forth their twisted agendas. I did not contribute a dime to David Duke or Pat Buchannon's presidential bids, so I will not contribute another dime to Marvel Comics corporation until they get their house in order. Sorry, but no more New Avengers, Wolverine, Ultimates, Powers, Ultimate Iron Man, Iron Man, or Captain America (that one's gonna hurt) until Reginald "The Hatemonger" Hudlin is off the payroll. I was so deeply offended that I actually tore all four issues to pieces, removed them from my home, and deposited them in the trash outside, because that's exactly where racist trash belongs.

Shame on you, Marvel. You should know better.

PS: The best part is, I'm an athiest and a liberal.

Here's a popular website for fans of the Black Panther (and other) comic book.

http://www.comicboards.com/blackpanther/

The returns on Hudlin's pennning of BP appear 'shaky', to say the least.
