Hello All,

Here is a link to a news story about authors begging yawl's good friend Oprah for a little bit of help. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=638&e=2&u=/nm/20050421/en_nm/lei sure_oprah_dc

Now, I want to know where all of those people, authors and industry folks, who said that no matter if Oprah didn't pick their books that at least it was getting folks out to read, and maybe, just maybe, there would be a few new readers because of it. Well...I guess that aint necessarily so.

Ahh but how many of them will call her a dirty dog when she doesn't pick their books? They don't want her to raise literacy and pick books they wantg her to pick their books. She won't be able to win on this one, she don't need the money and writers need to get off their arses and write books that people want to read.

I didn't see very many people who are consistently on the bestseller lists signing on to this.

Oprah's power cannot be denied. It's just amazing that a black woman has risen to the status she has, and it's particular interesting how white people idolize her more than blacks. I have to keep reminding myself that my cynicism about her is partially fueled by envy.

Hello All,

Cynique wrote: "Oprah's power cannot be denied. It's just amazing that a black woman has risen to the status she has, and it's particular interesting how white people idolize her more than blacks."

I reviewed a book some years ago where the author wrote the reason white folks, white women especially, idolize Oprah is because Oprah fulfills a need for "Mammy". And lets face it, white folks miss slavery! So where Scarlett O'Hara had her Mammy, white women of today want their Mammys too. But hey, if Oprah fulfills that needs and makes billions off of it, that's fine with me, especially since she don't try to impose that same crap over on any black folks that I know or heard tell of.

Thumper:

Now how can a man be soooo right on Oprah and soooo wrong on Porgy and Bess.

Right now you should quote Whitman--

"Ah contradicts mah se'f
Vurry well. Ah contradicts mahse'f

Ah contains multiduniarities"

(dialect added by Chris "Paul Lawrence" Hayden

A while back I expressed the opinion that Oprah was like a mammy figure to her core constituency of white career women and suburban housewives. But now she's gotten so glamorous and toned-up and so cozy with the likes of John Travolta and Jamie Foxx and any other male celeb looking to plug something on her show, that I now consider Oprah a hot mama. It's amazing what a billion-dollars can do for a gal!

Wow. I'm surprised to see Amy Tan signing on to this. I read her collection of essays/memoir, and based on the impression I got, she didn't seem the type to go this route.

Hey this is my kinda of chat -- folks

Hey Thumper - you know what I feel about Oprah and all that jazz - we are like minded -- It is pathetic that authors are "begging" for her help there are other venues where authors can get audience and feedback and market shares.

I like you review books of varying sorts yet authors are reluctant to try other venues. Yeah, my opinion aint on Oprah's level but there have been some good sales generated if not in dollars than in sense - tee hee - peace
