The Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA) today announced Diane McKinney-Whetstone as the winner of the 2005 BCALA Literary Award for fiction, and Howard French as the winner for nonfiction. The announcement came as part of the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting in Boston, January 14-19.

The awards recognize excellence in adult fiction and nonfiction by African American authors published in 2004, including the work of a first novelist, and a citation for Outstanding Contribution to Publishing. The recipients will receive the awards during the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, June 23-29.

McKinney-Whetstone won for her book, "Leaving Cecil Street" (William Morrow). Three fiction honor book winners also were selected: "Robbing Peter," by Kia DuPree (Prism Pages) www.robbingpeter.net, "Some People, Some Other Place" by J. California Cooper, (Doubleday) and "The Blackbird Papers" by Ian Smith (Doubleday).

"McKinney-Whetstone"?

She sounds like a brand of sparkling water. All she needs is a monocle.

Hey all,

I cannot believe she won for that book - Diane has written other things that should have one - if they did not -- I will have to check.

Has anyone read that work -- it STUNK -- I have read every thing else she has written and Tumbling was the best and they all went down hill after that - Tempest Rising, Blues Dance and finally Leaving Cecil Street. I could not get past the language - lots of swearing -- by page 65-ish? I put it down

Incredible - I would have thought that Angel of Harlem by Kuwana Haulsey - that book is like that - oh my -- let me calm down -- Huhhhhhhhhhh.

Peace

I loved Tumbling as well, but havent been interested in her other works. I've heard from various people that they love her style of story telling. So maybe that's what worked for her with this one...

Count me as another one who loved Tumbling and thought it was the best.
