Hello All,

I hope you all are aware of the Oscar nominations that were announced today. I am quite pleased this year. Jamie Foxx is nominated for two acting Oscars, supporting actor for Colletral and actor for Ray. This is a first in Oscar history for an actor. This feat had been accomplished by many actresses, nominated for both lead and supporting Oscars. The odds usually favor with the actress taking home at least one of the Oscars (usually the supporting actress Oscar). The only exception to the rule was when Sigorney Weaver lost both when she was nominated for The Gorilla In The Midst (Lead) and Working Girl (Supporting).

As far as actors go, Foxx will probably be declared the only actor to accomplish the double acting nomination thang. Well, it would depend on how you look at it. A double nomination for two different roles, yes, he is the only actor to do it. But, he is not the only actor to have been nominated for a lead and supporting Oscar in one year. Barry Fitzgerald, in 1944, was nominated for the two Oscars, but for the same role as Father Flannery in Going My Way. It was later revealed that it was a clerical error that he was submitted for both categories, yet there it is. No other actor or actress had done it before or ever able to do it again.

Don Cheadle is up for Best Actor along with Foxx. I hate this because as you all know, Cheadle should have won the Oscar for Devil in a Blue Dress, but he wasn't even nominated that year. So, while I am glad that he has a nomination this year, I'm afraid that Foxx may have this one sewn up. But, this is Oscar and white folks do strange thangs when it comes to voting. Foxx did such a scary job in Ray, an Oscar isn't enough!

Morgan Freeman is nominated in the Supporting Actor category along with Foxx. I'm going out on a limb here, but my money will be on Freeman winning this one. Here's why: because in the past he has lost Oscars that he should have won; especially Driving Miss Daisy! It's a shame that any actor of his calibur hasn't won an Oscar. So Freeman may get his makeup Oscar this year.

Carey, there it is for now. I'll will nail down all of the major awards again before the ceremony. I ought to start putting some money on my prediction, seeing as how I seldom, if ever lose.

Hello All

Well Thump, I have to give it to you, you've been on point quite often but go put some water on that big head of yours before you fall over and suffacate yourself in your stomach :-). I think however you could be off on you Freeman pick. I haven't seen it but I just can't get with this guy after I seen him eating shit off a white persons shoe in a movie some years ago. I know it's only a movie but come on man, I ain't takin' that role. Jamie was marvelous, simply wonderful. Don's movie was so dark and sad I can't see him winning. But hey, truth be told the boy got down. Really, his acting might have been better than Jamie's....huh. But as we all know, you don't mis much so I'll just wait a while to see what shakes out. Is your boy.......(American Beauty) up for anything? If so, all the others can forget about it! YOu heard me.....Forget about it!

Hello All,

Hell Carey, I told you about Spacey! Carey, funny you should mention the Oscar Negro Destroyer Kevin Spacey! Spacey did not get a single nomination nor did his Bobby Darin pic. I call it justice! I know you know how I feel about both of Spacey's Oscar wins, he didn't deserve either one. His Oscar for The Usual Suspects should have went to Cheadle. A major Oscar fu__ up! Then of course that funky American Beauty win (does anyone every talk about that movie and go "duh, now what the hell did I like about this movie in the first place?") when Denzel should have gotten it for Hurricane! What a robbery!? But, Denzel got his make up Oscar for Training Day. I told you that was going to happen but you wasn't listening. This is why Freeman is going to win in the Best Supporting Actor category. Cause Carey, the Oscar believe in giving out make up Oscars! Starting with Bette Davis, James Stewart, Al Pacino, Melvyn Douglas, Ronald Coleman, Geraldine Page, Whoopi Goldberg, need I go on? Now, if I was handling the Oscar campaign for Freeman, that's how I would play it. That said, this make Cheadle a dangerous fly in Foxx's ointment. But, I'm putting my support on Foxx for this one. His Ray Charles was flawless, FLAWLESS!!

Thumper and Carey, nice to see your support for 'Ray' and Foxx, and it's good to see that you value the academy (movie industry leaders) who regularly recognize performance excellence of their industry professionals in an effort to support the industry and individuals as well.

As Platinum Posters of Thumperscorner.com what could you and other thumperscorner leadership do to cooperatively endorse the literary excellence by members of Thumber's Corner?

Clearly, you see and appreciate how network recognition works over there for them; consider bringing it home. I'm not talking about a contest, I'm talking about stable, reliable, objective, truthful, and meaningful recognition of our own excellence.

Mah: Okay, I'm wracking my brain (and trying not to Google or imdb!) trying to remember what film Cheadle did that same year!!!

Devil in a Blue Dress?

I didn't see Million Dollar Baby, but I'm rooting for my man Morgan Freeman.

This is "off topic," but all the best to Edwidge Danticat who's been nominated for The Dew Breaker. The minute I finished it I said that if there's any fairness in the world, this one should receive an award nomination. Of course, you know what happened after PBS ring analyst Stanley Crouch punched the wrong guy. Rick Moody, who Dale Peck called "the worst writer of his generation," was the man in charge of the National Book Award for fiction and decided to shortlist five novels by white women who live in New York. Anyway, Arc of Justice by Kevin Boyle has been nominated for nonfiction so if it wins it'll be the first double winner since The Known World. But you know from last year that when it comes to books, ol' Mr. Linworth is gonna reward something which deliberately distorts history, that is, unless the Iowa-New Yorker Literary Crime Family beats him to it.

Yesterday the NY Times reported that John Sutherland, chairman of the Booker Awards, "tendered his resignation on Friday after suggesting that his fellow judges were unlikely to take the time to read all 130 books in contention and that they are 'light on minorities.'" I think what Mr. Sutherland meant to say was that minorities are "under-represented," but apparently English is not his first language.

"Blood Done Sign My Name" (I forget the author, has anyone heard of it) is also nominated in the nonfiction category. A book I've been hearing a lot about, although it wasn't nominated, is "Satchmo Blows Up the World: Jazz Ambassadors Play the Cold War" by Penny M. von Eschen. In 1956 around the time of the Montgomery bus boycott, the State Department hit upon the genius idea of sending mostly black, some white, jazz musicians around the world to advertise the rosy state of US race relations, but I guess they didn't play it the way it was written! Just ordered it as a matter of fact.

In the biography/autobiography category the one I like is "Will in the World" by Stephen Greenblatt. Just finished it yesterday. It's a really interesting biography of Shakespeare, but since not a whole lot is known about Shakespeare, it's speculative and has caused some controversy. It's always a drag when that happens!

Oscar Negro Destroyer....that sh*t is funny!

Thump, I get the feeling you don't like him *smile*.

Has Don Cheadle been in a part in which he didn't kill it? Somebody should do a google on ol'boy and then run out and rent every one...EVERYONE! He is simple one of the finest actors around. He might have moved ahead of Fishburn in my opinion......might.

I definitely rate him higher than Fishburne.

The first thing I ever saw DC in was "Rebound", a TV movie about the life and times of Earl "Goat" Manigault. Even on the small screen, he was great.

He made "Boogie Nights" watchable.

Hello A...Jah

Okay, I feel ya. I had just hit the scene because of connection problems so I was in the dark. I had seen all the links and such but had not checked them out. So much had been added to the board and I was trying to consume it all in a relatively short period. My girl Kathleen was going to be on TV, Thump was putting down his Oscar picks and my e-mail had backed up. So as you can see I was wrestling with many odds and ends. Excuse me if my post was somewhat confusing to you. When I have time I'll try to catch up.

Hey everyone, good job.

Thump, good to see you are back in stride doing what you and only you do best. Much love my brotha.

Carey

btw, Cat, you don't have to hit a brotha but damn, ring me up and cuss me out or somethin' *smile*. I know you're on TV and thangs, hangin' out with the heavyweights but could you throw a dog a bone every once in a while *lol*, just pretend like we are cool.

I don't sing to just anyone *wink*

My prediction is that Foxx will be given the Supporting Actor award b/c the Academy will give Best Actor to Cheadle, both because I hear he is phenomenal in the part (still haven't seen the movie; money woes), and because of the guilt factor (the world ignored the actual happening; I don't think they'll pass up on the movie, although they may just weasle out and only give it the Original Screenplay). Another reason they may pass up Foxx is that they figured he's already gotten his due with the Golden Globe.

But then, who knows...

Hello All,

Carey: Good to be back! Oh man, sure Cheadle has done movies where he didn't kill anyone: A Lesson Before Dying comes to mind. And I totally concur, Cheadle is a truly wonderful actor and its about time these acting academys start realizing it!

Mahogany: The year of Spacey's first win was the year Cheadle should have been nominated for Devil In A Blue Dress.

Chris: No Clint Eastwood will not get the Best Actor Oscar. He's doing good to get the nomination, the real surprise of the year. And lets call a spade a spade here for a second, Eastwood hasn't acted in decades. He always come across as the same person to me. Maybe if he took on a role as a gay man, ice cream truck driver or something, I would be better able to tell if he's acting or not. Second, Eastwood already has two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for The Unforgiven. That's enough, the Academy will not have any guilt passing him up for the acting Oscar.

Sharon: I disagree. Foxx will not be given the Supporting Actor Oscar. The supporting actor and actress categories are tough as hell this year. Any one of the actors could walk away with it. Cheadle will not be getting it either.

Second, The Golden Globes are not a good indicator as to who will actually win the awards. The Golden Globes are good for indicating who will be nominated for the Oscars. Actually, you need to look at the other awards being given out that are not televised to see who are the odds on favorite at winning. These awards are the Guild awards. The members of the Guild awards are the same people who vote for the Oscars in their specific categories. For instance, if you want to know who is most likely to win the Best Director award, simply look at who wins the Director Guild Award for Best Director. If you want to see who's will probably win the Best Picture Oscar, see who wins the Producer Guild award. The acting awards; see who win the Screen Actor Guild Awards...and so on and so forth. Now, its not written in stone that whoever wins these awards will win the Oscars, but they are closer to that golden statue.

*LOL* It seems strange that I know all of this stuff don't it? The Academy Awards has been one of the major fascination to me since I was little. Don't ask me why, cause I don't know why.

Hello All

I am right there with you Thump. Eastwood was given his ....."okay let's give it to him award" when he got the nod for unforgiven. Yeah, it wasn't an acting award but nevertheless he got a gimme in my opinion for the movie Unforgiven. I still think that movie wasn't all that. They might however throw him a bone by giving the award to Swank, the lead in his movie.

I didn't mean Cheadle acually shoot or killed someone, I meant he killed the role or did a great job.

I think those that might be in disagreement with you should dig in the archives. You've been doing this for years and seldom are you wrong. But hey, all I can tell them is don't bet against you unless they have a thang for losing :-). You made a believer out of me and you KNOW how I hated that. Now you're not going to come on the board after the awards and do the "I told you so" dance are you? But wait.......what if you are wrong...huh. What kind of dance will you do. I have a suggestion. If you are wrong in the leading and supporting role category, how about you run down the street butt naked screaming at the top of your lungs, " I was wrong...I was wrong....forgive me world I was wrong". What you say, that sounds fair doesn't it, a dance for a dance.

Thump and Carey:

I feel your pain. You should stop attaching so much importance to these awards anyway.

Hollywood giving itself awards and making us think it is a genuine process. And y'all falling for the hype.
Ahh you are thinking with your hearts and not your heads. Also, you are not voting. The Hollywood establishment is, and no way they are going to let Clint walk out without the prize.

You heard it here first. Forget all your notions about acting and craft. This is about politics. This is Eastwood. Maybe his last chance to get the nod. Foxx and Cheadle are still young. They can get theirs on the next go round.

Heaven forbid he falls dead before the ceremonies. The other nominees will probably be asked not to forfeit and give it to Clint as a mark of respect.

I won't be surprised to hear Foxx and Cheadle announce that they are voting for him, too.

Carey:

500 years in this country and black folks still don't know how it works. No wonder white folks think we crazy.

I just have two words to respond--well maybe more, but the first two--

John Wayne.

John Wayne never played anybody but John Wayne, yet Hollywood had to give him the Oscar for True Grit--one of his best films, but hardly Citizen Kane, you think?

George W. Bush is in the Whitehouse. America is standing tall as the world's sole superpower. Hollywood just took a lickin' and is anxious to show the folks in flyover country they is "jest folks"

Clint Eastwood is the last Man of the Silver Screen. He is a rock solid Republican. He is the Man With No Name, Dirty Harry. He was on Rawhide.

He is up against one black man playing a Rwandan hotel keeper and another playing a blind soul singer--

I ain't even counting the white actors nominated who know they are out of the box right now.

The nomination is tantamount to an award. Watch. Fox and Cheadle will announce that they are voting for Clint. In fact if something screws up and one of them does get it, they will hand it over to him, insuring big roles in the future.

In your heart, you know I'm right.

I think you will have to eat those words, Chrishayden. It's not as if Eastwood hasn't received an Oscar. He got a whole boat load of them for his movie,"The Unforgiven," including one for best director. And, if he'd never won a single award, Hollywood has a tradition of rewarding legendary actors who the Academy has overlooked by presenting them with an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement. Also, only those who belong to The Academy are eligible to vote and not everybody in Hollywood is a member of this select group. You have to be nominated for membership and then invited to join, providing you receive enough votes. Which is why, when it comes to the Oscars, it's not so much about popularity as it is about prudency on the part of these people who want to be perceived as members who take their job seriously. And if the motion picture awards community really wanted to get on the good side of Middle America, they would be giving more recognition to Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ" which has pretty much been snubbed in the major categories. Whereas Michael Moore's Farenheit 9/11 would've probably won another oscar if he hadn't take it out of the documentary category. In my opinion, Leonardo DiCaprio is more of a threat than Clint because Jamie and Don might cancel each other out.

You too, eh? Too bad. I would have thought you'd have remained strong til the end.

Too bad, m'dear you and Thumper and Carey have absolutely no impact on the voting. No it is in the hands of 4 or 5 thousand industry insiders who will not dare to show their faces in town if they don't give it to Clint--and by a large margin.

Don't any of you let nobody sucker you into making a bet on this one.

There will be much weeping and gnashing of teeth when Clint Eastwood steps up to get his award--much of Cheadle and Foxx saying they are glad for him and it was the best thing.

Since I don't watch the utterly boring and pretentious proceedings but tune in on the news afterward, I will shake my head and say, "They should listen to their Uncle Chris"

If, as you claim, you don't keep up with such Hollywood frivolity, then does it occur to you that you don't know what you're talking about??? If Clint Eastwood wins, it will be by default because all the other candidates will cancel each other out. Clint has received more than his share of accolades and there's no sympathy vote for him. Not only that, he's old Hollywood. There's a whole new breed out there running the show. If anybody is the sentimental favorite, it's Martin Scorcese who directed "The Aviator." Although highly-acclaimed for his body of work, he's never won an Oscar.

come on Carey, now, I'm saying they all had serious roles, and are not up for cartoon character stereotypical roles. (denzel--thug crooked cop--halle-'ho') you know?

Halle-Ho......Thug Cop.....

Leave it to you to come up with gems like that!

Okay, now I see.

Yeah, you're right, does my heart good.
As you know, I had a few words on that same subject and I am trying to watch my blood pressure so am going to chill on it today.

The man is a M'Fer ain't he.

Thanks baby girl.

They might have to scoop their lips up off the flo. Oh yeah, one might sqeek in but listen here partna', somebody gonna be real sad *smile*.

Hello

Just for the record, it's not like many people have seen most of these flicks. I saw Hotel Ru.... and didn't remember the wife so I doubt she's a big vote getter. I guess what I am saying Mr. Thump, don't let your big head get too fat. Hell most don't even know what pictures are in the running. Nevertheless, I hate to see grown men cry so if your picks don't shake out like you planned, get all that crying out before you hit the board.....okay. The best thing about tonight will be Chris Rock, no doubt. I'll be by my TV nodding in and out and that's the way it goes.

Hello Carey,

Watch and learn my Ol' Grayhead, watch and learn. Now, I'm not saying, entirely, that the Academy isn't capable of throwing a few surprises, because they are. But, I'm going to stick with my previously stated predicitions.

Hello All,

I know there should be a lot of happy people on this board because they took my advice and put a little money on my predict winners? *eyebrow raised* I know you all didn't! See, now why y'all gotta be so hardheaded. Did I not call this thing or what! OK, Carey, out of 6 I got 5 correct!! Hell, I'm still impressed as all get out with myself.

Now Carey, what were you saying about Million Dollar Baby? *eyebrow raised* Something about them picking their mouths up off the floor, or something like that...

Despite this being a historical event by the number of black nominees, this is also the first time in Oscar history that more than one black actor took home the award in one year.

I think Chris Rock did a nice job. And Sean Penn needs to quit, trying to crack on somebody, looking like he put his tux on the day before and went to bed with it one. Right sloppy lookin'. Now, I'm going to sleep. Next year, when I tell y'all who's going to win, I'll get less static and hear more printers going off and some money being laid down.

Hello All,

I made a mistake, this is the SECOND time more than one black actor took home the Oscar. I totally spaced it about Halle and Denzel. My bad.

......Pssssst...Psssssst, hey buddy come here. Take this five spot and go down on the corner and see if you see a guy walking around with a huge grin on his face. Don't ask me why but if he is take this other five and call the police and tell them he's urinating in the street...okay. I know it's strange but it's very important to me *smile*.

Okay Thump, you are the man. You called it right. But as I said earlier, it wasn't a real stretch. Nevertheless you nailed it. Oh, yeah, you did miss one.....thanks for sharing that, you're so modest. See, I've been trying to tell these pilgrims you the man *lol*. I think I should stick to the fight game I hate eating crow....yum yum bottoms up, I was wrong and Thumper was right.....yicks, I think I am going to throw up.

btw, you could have waited until the morning......messing up my sleep.
