I have a ten-year-old son, and I have been buying him Walter Dean Myers which he really seems to enjoy. But I am finding that there is a DEARTH of literature for and about young boys such as himself!

Does anyone else have this problem, or any other recommendations? I told him to write down a few ideas of what HE'D like to read and we'd write it, cause that's what I'm going to school for. LOL

In the meantime, I hope I am wrong. I have that Black Books Galore for Boys book, but can't get to it right now, it's in storage.

I am hoping that with this surge of urban literature, there will be more books for children as well.

Thoughts/comments?

Rashena,

Check who publishes the Walter Dean Myers books. Perhaps they can provide titles produced by Myer’s produced of similar books to what your son enjoys that he has not yet discovered. Also, perhaps the publisher has similar books produced by other authors within their literary stable.

But be careful not to become too assertive of what YOU prefer your son read. Because he’s just learning to read.

And as you doubtless know, boys are INCREDIBLY restless and have the attention spans of humming birds. So the last thing you want to do foist something upon him that might distract him or turn him off from reading.

Thanks, ABM! He does actually enjoy those books though because they're set in a city and they are for young black boys. He likes those and Harry Potter, Captain Underpants, etc.

He is just LIKE me, LOVES to read, so I'm not worried about that. I remember my mom was going to the bookstore and he asked her to bring him back a magazine, I was bursting with pride. LOL!

Myers has also written a Malcolm X book that I am going to get for him and a short story collection called 145th Street that I will be picking up for him as well, I also forgot about Just Us books, published by Wade Hudson. I am going to their website now.

I'll be going to B&N later this afternoon and will check that Black Books Galore for boys while I am there to compile a better list and report my findings for anyone else that may be interested. :-)

There aren't too many black book writers for young children now days, but if your son enjoys the Harry Potter type stories here are a few that may peek his interest:
1.Series of Unfortunate Events by:Lemony Snicket
~there are 11 books in this series
(in order from 1-11)
2. Eragonis is also science fiction/fantasy but I don't know the name of the author.
3.Artemis Fowl by: Eion Colfer (<--I think thats right) there are three books in the series.

Those are just a few that I could come up with off the top of my head, but he should enjoy reading those.
And if he is reading at an advanced leveled and likes books that are kind of scary try the Goosebumps seris by R.L.Stein.

Taylor. Some non-African-American writers and works he may enjoy are: Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson; The Cay by Theodore Taylor; The Outsiders by S.E.Hinton;Hatchet, Night-John and Sarny by Gary Paulsen. Good Luck. REK

Rashena, Hyperion Books for Kids has a imprint called Jump at the Sun which features fairy tales, picture books, and fiction and non-fiction for kids and young adults. The link above gives their complete list of titles.

My older daughter likes the "colorized" fairy tales. For example, "Goldilocks" is so named because she has gold beads on her cornrows. Jack (of beanstalk fame) has dreads. Etc.
