Hello All,

I'm so happy to announce that J. California Cooper one of my favorite living authors has a new book set to come out October 19, 2004, Some People, Some Other Place. Here's a peek at the cover (I do believe the cover is different). I'm going to start reading my copy next week. Some Love, Some Pain, sometime, one of her short story collections, was the first book that I've read of hers. I've been a huge fan since then. Her novel Family is one of my favorite books of all times. Cooper writes like a dream. If you're not familiar with Cooper's previous works, please check her out.

Thank you SOOOOOO much for this info, you have made my day! J. California Cooper is one of my favorite authors too, after reading her, I started like short stories a lot more. I will be at the bookstore as soon as it opens that day!

:-)

This is an awesome surprise, long overdue but right on time.

Hi Thumper,

I just received my copy of Some People, Some Other Place in the mail! I'm starting it this very minute! I love the characters she creates. There's a small interview about her in the November issue of Essence magazine. I would love to chat about the book when you're finished. :-)

I just finished the book and I thought it was excellent. Some of the history parts I didn't want to read but it was only because I was so anxious to see what happened to Eula Too and I thought it was distracting. But taken in the whole context, it was ok and helped you to understand the times and the people even though sometimes it made for slow reading. Some people may think the biblical references were unnecessary but I think it put the pieces together and helped you to examine the choices we each make as individuals and how it impacts life. Overall it was great and I didn't want the book to end and I certainly wasn't ready for it to end when it did. I think for several nites afterwards I dreamed of Eulat Too and her life! What's great about J California is that her characters always leave an imprint in your mind and heart.

I can't wait to start reading this book! I've had it for some time but haven't had time to read it, but now that school is done with I will be getting into it some time next week!

J California makes you feel like you're sitting on a porch shelling peas with her "down home" while she's telling you a story, I just love her. :-)

I think I'm in the minority because I really don't ge t the fuss about this book. I've been reading about Cooper's stuff forever but this book was the first by her that I'd ever picked up. The characters were just too flat for my taste and I didn't care much for the preachy tone or the abrupt ending. I'd like to try something else by her but I'm not sure where to start.
