We talk a lot about the literary establishment --Well who is the literary establishment? Does anyone have a name, a list of names? Or can we liken the "establishment" to the "man behind the curtian" and pay no attention to him? |

There was an article done in Esquire a few years ago that listed all the luminaries--I'll see if I can find it.
Right now, off the top of my head I would say the gang at the New York Times Review of Books, The folks who maintain the New York Times Bestseller list, The PEN folks, Harold Bloom, Michiko Kukitani (I hope I got the name right, reviews books for the New York Times) Editors at the top publishing houses--Random House, Simon and Schuster etc., the Pulitzer Committee, the Nobel Prize Committee, the Book of the Month Club folks, Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, Oprah and the Book Chains (for their ability to market books). I probably have left someone out.
You may ignore them and you may have great sales, but it will be very difficult. They have more power to make a person than break them I assume
Do you want to ignore them? What do you want to do? If you want commercial and critical success--no. If you just committed to commercial success or have a progressive or revolutionary program you may have no choice but to ignore them. |
