This was more of a treatise, than a review. When I finished reading it, however, I wasn't particularly enlightened. Maybe because I had already read the book. I'm beginning to think that people should stop trying to interprete this work. It speaks differently to different people. That's the magic of it.

Cynique:

But we try to interpret all works. Maybe it says more about ourselves than the work.

I liked it, his perspective on her work in general. Thanks.

I'm about three quarters through - and I gotta say I'm loving LOVE -- the characters (as is Morrisons trade mark) are richly drawn - so much so that I dreamed about Junior and Romen all night long -- let me tell you that line about the "hoof" really did something to me!

How interesting this is: We have two external reviews, one terrible and the other solid. I felt Pickney's was pretty solid, though i only skimped it. Tate's on the other hand, was poorly written. Secondly, to call Morrison judgemental rather than "L" is irresponsible. I would suspect that he would read her interviews, besides her fiction, for this is his job as a book reviewer, especially the work of a nobel laureate. If he did so, he would know that she is fascinated with "JUnior" like characters, not to judge but to humanize them.
