This was discussed on another thread, but I wanted to share this excerpt.

Hello All,

I just finished Love by Toni Morrison today and it was awesome! I loved it! Love is not a difficult or challenging read, not like Beloved or Jazz. It's as if Morrison no longer has to go through complex prose acrobatics to exercise the true power of her words. Her writing is seasoned, like mixed greens on the second day after the seasonings have been allowed to work their magic. The Morrison trademarks are still present. The book has a helluva opening sentence and ended with a bang that is sure to generate debates and discussions for generations to come. Her place as one of our literary great is still firmly in place with Love. I can't wait to hear what you think about it.

So ... I read Love yesterday. Can I say that I loved it? Hmmmm... I don't think so. The beginning drove me absolutely insane flowing around the meanderings of L's stream of consciousness. What I did love was the thought that I believed that you, Thump, had said that the book was about love. I know, I know, you didn't say that HERE but in my never-to-be-wrong mind you said it and you were wrong!! (You know you're ALWAYS wrong!) I'm reading this book and thinking, it's not love, it's need you retard! It's the need to be recognized by those that have a certain stature in life. Or better yet, the need to be wanted by those with an air of notoriety. But then there's the end and the title is clear. (I know, I know, I'M the retard! ... term of endearment in my household.)

And even though it pains me to say, I (choke, choke) agree with you Thumper. Morrison has managed a lovely novel that doesn't hurt the gray matter but still has the depth that one comes to expect from her. (Props to you for the greens ref)

Hello All,

I too just finished reading love. And unlike the others, I found it to be a (somewhat) difficult read with the ever switching of point-of-views which caused me to start from the beginning just to see exactly who's view I was reading "this" time. You with me? Overall, the book was (is) an excellent read; however, I advise that it be read in an environment where you can give it your undivided attention. Otherwise, you may get a "little" confused about what (who) you're reading.

Granted, I'm speaking from experience and mine doesn't necessarily dictate that of other's who have (will) read Love.

I'm looking forward to this one. I read the first two pages and it drew me in which normally doesn't happen with her work. I hope to pick this one up before the year is over.

I'm also taking a class now that is centered around Paradise. It's going slow though. <grin>
