A couple of ideas have crossed my mind regarding the discussion baords in recent days. I can use some feedback. Should we:

Require an Account & Password
In other words I would require visitors, who wanted to post, to email me some basica information, including their true identity. I in turn provide them with a usename and password that only they could use.

More "Actively" Moderate the Baord
This means deleting posts that are, for example, far off the topic of books, extremely rude or just plain silly.

Of course there are trade offs. Deciding what is in approriate and needs to be deleted is purely subjective. Requiring people to register eliminates anonymity. And of all of these thing require more effort to manage

Doing nothing is a viable alternatve as well.

Whar do you think?

Requiring an account/password won't provide for you what you appear to seek. Anyone who knows anything about the web can easily doctor up identities, anonymous email addresses, etc. Besides, requiring that is reminiscent of some of the onerous strictures of the US Attorney General John Ashcroft's intrusive PATRIOT ACT that have many freethinking Americans up at arms.

I think, on balance, it is a DANGEROUS thing for Black folks to "Moderate" (AKA "regulate", AKA "discriminate"...or AKA "eliminate") what each other say here...or anywhere else for that matter. Troy, your suggestions, though apparently reasonable, will on balance, likely only lead to dull, lifeless and redundant commentary, which is death to any site geared to promoting insightful/entertaining discourse.

But ok Troy, I can see what this post stems from. And I admit to and apologize for having contributed to what led to your decision. So to be safe, I suggest that you restrict discussion on this site strictly and solely to books...books that are sold only by Black authors...who advocate a "preferred" socio-political agenda...that are available only via this site...who receive positive reviews for aalbc book readers.

Maybe that will provide for you, Thumper and the legion of "Anonymouses" the lively and fulfilling commentary that you desire.

Troy,
I realize that I've monopolized the board far too much. I kept waiting for somebody to reign me in, but no one did, so I'll do it myself and keep my future input to a minimum.

I think the anonymous option allows people to speak their mind without fear of retribution or persecution. And as long as they are expressing an opinion that they feel is valid I say you let them run amuck.

And for the next subject, "actively moderating", hmmmmmm... I noticed that you did erase one of the double postings from earlier this week. So, in one way or another, you are moderating, editing content, or whatever. So as long as your name is on the head of this web address, postings will remain at your subjective discretion. It has worked pretty well so far, so...let it ride.

Peace

I kinda like the idea of having an account and password. Especially since it appears there's a troll on the prowl tonight. Responding to posts that are just under a year old and nearly all regarding the same subject -- seems rather dubious.

And, it definitely keep others from posting under the same user name, which is done to inflame and mislead.

Troy, I am against censorship. If you're concerned about the content of some of the posts, you should draw up a users guide or somesuch and whoever violates that you can reprimand. I wasn't that impressed with the deletion of the thread on the other board (though I don't know the exact reason why you did it of course)

If a thread is silly - so what? I LIKE silly and some of the stupid posts are one of the reasons why I still come here after four or so years.

One thing that would improve this board in my opinion is to remove some of the redundant threads from a year ago. The board is getting unwieldy. Other boards I visit who use the same format as this one have many pages and old threads just move from page one to the next etc until they drop off completely.

I'm not sure if I like your idea of having to register. The board has been in its present format without users having to do this and there have been worse flame wars than the Kola Boof debacle. Overall I think I'm against it.

Troy I don't envy your position. I think that it is up to readers of the board to decide which post are worthy of a response. Some posters place controversial sometimes just silly and stupid post on the board to start mess. It has been my observation that when the board is slow (not many post) these post get a lot of play. I think it is up to all of the regular readers and posters to decide what to give our time. We should think a little more carefully about what we respond to. A fool can't argue by him/herself. Maybe divert these post by starting new threads that reflect what we all say we want the board to be a intellegent discussion of AA literature and the like. I can remember for a long while the board had such good post I was visiting twice a day. It was so much fun. Not so lately, Sometimes I think I still visit out of habit and it make me sad. Good Luck Troy.

Just my humble opinion

Troy,

I've visited many boards and I have to tell you that this board is by far the most entertaining and informative. Yes, sometimes it can get out of hand, but that's the beauty of free speech. I happen to enjoy the board as it is.

T- Money

I agree somewhat with ABM on the identity thing, it's pretty impossible if someone really wants to hide. It would cut the "random identities" thing down a bit though, I think. Although, the worst abusers seem to have an endless amount of time to create their facades. Still, I like the idea that it would send people like that jumping through hoops.

I'm against censorship too, but it's tough. I think you can set ground rules. There are extreme cases that would fit the bill. Honestly though, I haven't seen anything yet that warranted it. The worst I saw was during the KB debacle, and the most inflammatory emails just made their authors look silly.

Here's my geek thing: i wish we could post with icons. It would help humanize the board to have images associated with posts. But maybe I'm being silly.

This board is live! That's the beauty of it. To tamper with its present format would rob it of its character. Delete when you see fit, but don't restrict who can post. I have promised to exercise more restraint in the future, as has ABM. So your battle to improve things is half won. LOL

I've obviously missed something that has happened on the board since I only pop in occasionally but I would like to chime in on this.

I come here because I like the comrarderie that is here and the overwhelming intellectual discussion that abounds about books. Sometimes a few posts get out of hand and deleting those out of scope is fine with me. I don't like requiring identification, because chances are people wouldn't be truthful so why bother with it. A simple statement that says that posts that are blatently _________ will be deleted.

I'm trying to keep the work off of you, its enough to provide and maintain as is, I'm sure.

I visit and post at other sites. Some of them are absolutely savage with namecalling, insults, threats, postings that seem to have been scrawled in human waste on the walls of padded cells.

Others are lame, unintelligent and dull to the max--discussions of who is our favorite Friend and why, who we would like to see play Spiderman, who Beyonce Knowles is dating, what big budget summer movies we plan to see next year.

This one lies in between--the posts sometimes get heated but are usually over something important (if you ignore that time me and ABM went back and forth over comic books--I can't help it, ABM. It's an obsession of mine).

I think the current system works fine. When I have come across some thread I didn't like, I just kept going and ignored it (if you forget about that time me and Yukio went back and forth over my alleged sexism--I can't help it, Yukio! It's a hot button issue with me)

I guess what I am saying is I have probably been as big a sinner as anyone who has ever posted, and have not been asked to leave or even disciplined. I think most folks can be counted on to, in the interests of keeping some decorum and wanting to stay a part of this, police themselves and when and if they get out of line, to be put in check.

I am for keeping things like they are. (Besides I remember it changed to this new format it kind of slowed things down while folks tried to get used to it)

Troy and all:

I don't believe in censorship. so i say no to the password suggestion. I also don't think you Troy or Thumper should do any additional work.

My comments on the other thread concerning the need for a discussion for intellectual engagement was not about censorship or policing.

On the contrary, i attempted to point out that there was alot of disrespect and misunderstanding going on. My suggestion would be to be honest with your position, ie comments on books and ideas, and especially to be honest with both yourself and the site, which means that, for example, if InPrint calls folk illiterate, and it is his attempt to be funny, then you need to acknowledge that his intent was not to hurt anyone. Correspondingly, InPrint needs to state, as he eventually did, that he had no malicious intent. This is respect, communication, and engagement, so instead of Troy and Thumper doing more work, i believe that we, the community, need to do a better job at working with eachother, so that we can have fun without folk getting sensitive or that we can get sensitive and folk understand that their partially responsible though they didn't intend to hurt the person. This is good communication, i think.

Chris Hayden:
I don't know you, but your comments were certainly sexist. This doesn't make you a bad person, and nor was/am i saying that you, ontologically, are sexist. I was and still will say however that sexism, among men and women, is inherent to this society, as is the case of many. Sexism just means that your behavior, thoughts, ideas, etc...are shaped by the belief that women and men occupy different roles in life. Most women, btw, are sexist. If they weren't they wouldn't teach their sons to open a door for a woman and not a man, put gas in a women's car and not a man's....this is all sexism, w/o the social stigma.

This board is already being censored and moderated . . . there was just a thread that was deleted and site owners have warned posters who have gone far afield.

It would be great if folks didn't go where they know they shouldn't in a discussion. But, like children, some try and push, just to see how far you'll let them get away with.

Obviously, we need some guidelines or rules because we're having this discussion. However, I am sure a happy medium will be found.

Cynique, please don't rein yourself in. Keep talking...no, wait, typing. Sometimes, us lurkers rely on those who are more active on the board to speak on our behalf. I know I do even though I come here everyday. BTW-I agree with those who wish to keep censorship at bay. Not only is it subjective, but it tempers creative discussion. Yeah, silly posts pop up, but silliness pervades real life, and you just step over it like yesterday's...waste. But if Troy desires some type of control, then he has that right. Kinda like those restaurants who reserve the right to refuse anyone who ain't wearing shirt and shoes...

Don't change a thing Troy! We should just be more considerate of others even when we're arguing. I do think making fun of someone being put up for adoption by their own grandmother is cruel, tasteless and way more offensive than telling somebody to kiss your butt. But other than that this board has been great.

Censorship should be out of the question because then the board will be too boring. It's more fun when people say what they feel and if it gets out of hand you and Thumper can always delete the unnecessary stuff. Thumbs up!

I just finished "THE KNOWN WORLD". Errybody should read that book! It's off the chain! I never knew that some black people in the old days owned slaves. It's also fascinating the way the book shows that black people internalized most of the same views about black skin that their white masters had. I think it continues to this day. Fascinating book!

I hope I did not convey the impression that I wanted to apply the controls I mentioned at the start of this thread. I do not. I wanted to determine if anyone else thought that I should make these or any other changes to the board.

The overriding theme, so far, seems to be that I should not make these changes the board. I'm glad about that.

I don't like deleting posts. With one exception (on the Culture, Race & Economy board) the only deletions I've made previously were duplicated posts and clearly unrelated posts like a selling Viagra. I will continue to do this as I notice them. Rondall the post which you noticed, that I deleted, was a duplicated post.

No one individual prompted me revisit these changes. Indeed, this is not the first time I have considered them. This is the 4th vendor's software that we have used in the last 6 years to support these discussion boards. The technology has progressed where it is possible to do things today that were too expensive, time consuming or impossible a few years ago. I look at which features are available and decide which one are important to implement.

For example, you'll notice there is a field for password it is not enabled. I can also enable a feature to display IP addresses which, in some cases, will help identify if the same PC (often person) which may be posting under different names. This is feature is not enabled either. In any case I only care about this if someone is trying to decieve the board with the use of different names.

As far as verifying identify that can be easily accomplished by requiring a credit card. I doubt if anyone is going to go so far to subvert this form of validation to post under an assumed name. Besides I don't want the additional burden and the more barriers to entry you impose the fewer people will post.

Have I said recently that the life of any discussion board ARE the posters? The success of any board are the posters, full stop, period.

Sometimes I read this board and I laugh out loud -- really. I enjoy this board as much as anyone. Some of the posts are really beautiful and others are just plain dumb. When you get a group of smart people together you are bound to have everything from heated debates to obvious flirting. You'll read posts that teach you something new or give you a perspective that you have not considered and you'll read posts that will just piss you off. It is all there.

I don't mean to discount the lurkers. I really get a kick out of meeting someone in person who tells me about a post they read on Thumper's corner. More importantly however, the number and frequency of lurkers is proportional to the to the level of interest in the discussion board. So y'all keep reading

It has been a while since I got some meaningful feedback concerning the discussion boards, so this was very help. I will implement the suggestion to remove the older threads. I will probably delete threads which have not been added to in the last 6 months or more. I do, however, like keeping old posts, I'll see if I can archive them somewhere else.

As far as rules are concerned. I can create them, and have in the past, but people do what they want or what they are allowed to do regardless of rules. In general, the rules are use common sense. If you don't have any someone lese on the baord will let you know (smile)

I started these discussion boards to allow people to freely express themselves, share ideas and hopefully enjoy themselves and learn something in the process.

Thanks

I have had painful, experiences from participating in the Thumper's Corner board by having been called names ("you remind me of a so and so..."), by receiving unsolicited criticism, and by having information that I did not care to share with others revealed for everyone to read. None the less I am not in favor of more stringent measures for participation.

I just ask that members of this community think twice before posting the critical and hurtful things that are listed on this board. I truly have decreased my visitations due to the negative atmosphere. A lot of the negativity has a very deep impact and lasts a long time. We all have burdens to bear. The person who gave me an unsolicited insult did so at a time when I was fighting many battles and their unkindness was the straw that broke the camel's back. I came to aalbc for respite from cares and ended up with more mean comments echoing around in my head. But greater censorship and stringency is not the answer.

I only said the board sucks because they were bashing a person who was not allowed to be here to defend herself. Once the bashing went to the subject of her adoption, her nationality, etc. I got plain sick. I'm a student at Howard University, we have nothing but intellectual discourse day in and day out but I never seen anything as hateful on here like JUDY also said. BTW Judy--sorry someone was rude to you.

I do like the board and a lot of us on campus come here to check it out. Zane popping in was mucho COOOOL! She's hot.

Lurker:

I agree. People who dish it out should be able to take it. Equally important--people who are not allowed in should not have to be dished so viciously. Especially when they have loyal fans like myself and others who care about fairness.

I agree with the dishing out business. Yet, the problem is whether or not one's interpretation is correct, such that if i interpret your comments towards me as personal and indeed they aren't then i can initiate a bellicose exchange when there really wasn't a cause. In this case, you can either return the fire or explain to me that i misinterpreted your comments, or as InPrint did, state that his comments were not venomous but humorous, at least to him.

In this case, i advocate we carefully read people's posts. And ask questions before we accuse folk.

Were you just as sick when this person was bashing others? What's with this selectiveness? There are plenty of people who get bashed but I don't recall you coming to their defense.

Thumper,

Are you saying that Kola Boof has herpes?

Are you saying that she is a man and not a woman?

When you say "IT"....what does that mean?

If you really want to know who is posting some of these messages in defense of Kola Boof, then you might contact three places in Washington, D.C.

1) Sisterspace and Books
2) The Women's Studies Dept. at Howard University
3) The secretaries lounge at Anacostia High (all this is in the town where Kola grew up).

I know for a fact that I'm not Kola but also that many of us who love and know Kola in D.C. frequent this board and have been disgusted by the attacks on her since she's been gone the last few MONTHS.

On the other board where Troy has political topics, I see that Kola posted this morning thanking Troy for removing the offensive thread. Her post is still up under "Not Anonymous".

You wrote the following:

who continue to cause trouble under cover.

But then you implied that this woman, Kola Boof, is not a real woman and has herpes--on a public board. I'm assuming that you're calling her a drag queen/transsexual, which after watching her on FOX NEWS...I would say she's the best one I ever saw. From a legal standpoint, you don't seem like the smartest apple in the tart to me, Bro.

Kola has been gone months. Your comments seem overly bitter, kinda psychotic and totally EVIL. I mean, it would be funny if it wasn't so deep. But seeing as how well you know Kola Boof so well, I could see innocent surfers to this board assuming that you have inside knowledge about Kola Boof having herpes and being a "she/he".

People could also assume that you're speaking on behalf of Troy Johnson and everyone at aalbc.com.

(Smile) I'm a law student. I'm just wondering what exactly DO you mean?

Since you're so big and bad, why don't you tell us.

Spare us the righteous indignation. The fact that Kola couldn't defend herself worked to her advantage, because had she been allowed to post here, the fangs would have come out, and it would've been very hard for fans like you to portray her as a victim.

As illogical as you think, Ms. Danciecia, I certainly wouldn't hire you for a lawyer. Its easy to see why you like Ms. Boof. You and her are 2 of a kind.

Cynique

Let's talk about "legal" indignation.

I have always took it that Thumper knows Kola Boof personally. Is he now publicly sharing some revelations that none of us ever knew? Sounds to me he's saying she has HERPES and she's a "man".

What does it sound like to you Cynique and since Kola isn't here to defend herself against these "new" comments that have nothing to do with her career, her books, etc. How would you justify Thumper's indiscretion in posting such remarks?

Other than the fact that you hate Kola, think she's a fraud and support Thumper 100% no matter what he does. What would your argument be on his behalf?

I think you're both making some bad judgement calls in the last few days. But the lastest ones could get Troy Johnson and this web site into big trouble, because more than a hundred thousand people come here every year according to the traffic records Johnson has on public file.

Daniecia,

Kola is super tight with Troy Johnson. I doubt seriously she would sue this web site, although I admitt you make some solid points. Thumper should not let his emotions get carried away. His comments were malicious, offered for malicious intent, willfully and intentionally to inflict pain and suffering on Miss Boof, and worse, on her career.

But Kola wouldn't sue Troy. They plot half this stuff as publicity in the first place. Trust me, I've met Troy Johnson at NEW YORK IS BOOK COUNTRY last year and he was pushing Kola Boof as though he had published her himself.

Yes Thumper,

I did get your email. I was one of 50 people Miss Boof forwarded it to.

You should stop harrassing this woman and get some help yourself. You should also have let this thing die and not alluded that Kola is a "man" and has Herpes. That's the second time you've done that. It's really not good for Troy Johnson, legally. In fact, it could be devastating.

Luckily, Kola is busy laughing it up with ABM and is not the "witch" type who files lawsuits--even when they're deserved like in this case. I guess "LTS" has a point, too. Kola and Troy are good pals. HEY....could Troy be ABM?

(Wink)

Lets have some peace Thumper. You and Cynique are far worse people than Kola could ever be. On the real, though.

Daniecia,

Who in the hell do you think you are to threaten me?? If I was you I would look up the first amendment to the Constitution concerning freedom of speech. There was no slander, no libel statement since no one in my post is named. The first post was made in general, hence, the reason no name is given! Try reading the post and stop guessing as to who I'm talking about, because odds are I know TOO MANY people to focus on just one, and I could be and was talking about a great many folks. And if this board is so undesirable to you, why are you here? I ain't living off of your love. I didn't ask you to come. I don't know nothing about you nor do I care to. And frankly, you not being here won't hurt my feelings none in the least. I'm not stopping you from starting your own discussion board. Why don't you do that? I'm tired of tip-toeing around the tulips with people like you! Hoping that if I don't say anything, the situation will pass that much faster. Well now, I don't give a flip! If you don't like what you read, Step off! If you don't like what anybody has to say, about a book or a PERSON...TOUGH!! That's just too damn bad! Carry on! Start your own board, live your own life! And leave me and mine alone!! Because I'm sure that there is nothing in your law books that says that you MUST visit this board!

All:

This is ridiculous, really! As is evident from the last few days, few of us are innocent of dishing dirt and disrespect. No one, it is clear, is innocent! In this thread thumper and Daniecia have exchange battled and Cynique and others have instigated.

I have done a lil dirt too:
I've only harassed Thumper(DuBois dialogue), he has done similarly with me, Cynique and I have not done so, Kola has assidiously harassed me, while i have not done the same to her, ABM has slightly harassed me, and I have not done so to him, Chris Hayden thinks i've harassed him, and he has slightly done so to me. This is my war history, as i remember it!

Lets move on!

Daniecia:
Thumper's phraseology and perhaps poor choice of words considering the belligerent atmosphere, "'Not every closed eye is sleep, not every good-bye is gone'. And like herpes he/she/IT comes back!" seems like an analogy and/or metaphor about irony and omnipresence!

In addition, Thumper also stated that he felt anonymity was dishonest and mentioned a person who, it seems to me, was speaking against Kola.

Thumper:
Daniecia asked you some questions that you haven't answered. Yes, yes.... i know! You don't have to, but not answering has intensified the exchange.

You know what, this is ridiculous. Troy starts off a thread, simply asking if he should make some changes. Asking for suggestions...and some of you take off on this long-winded, never-ending battle about Kola Boof..WHY!WHY!WHY! The thread was deleted, the subject should be dead. I believe we are all adults here, so what does it matter that someone you really don't know, doesn't like so and so, and said this about so and so, "sticks and stones"...this is worse than High School. I've been around for awhile, and I assure, as others have, Kola can and will defend herself. She's the best at it. Some of you keep this thing going, on and on, and it's really not that important. Zane can and will defend herself, or not if she chooses to. Who are we to judge every poster, because they don't act the way we want them to, or choose to disagree?

Bottom line Troy, I really enjoy your board, and the posters, even when they say the things they say....it's entertaining and informative.

Danecia...come on, re-read Thumpers post, he didn't say Kola had herpes or any of things you said, that was surely taken out of context.

Cynique - I don't care what no one says...I enjoy reading you, ABM and Yukio, please don't hold back! I even liked Kola and Thomas.

This board is the BEST!

Sisgal thanks for telling it like it is. We needed that. I agreed with evrything you said, but didn't know how to word it.

Kola got Troy to remove the thread. We should let it be over with. But now a NEW mystery starts.

Like Daniecia, I am wondering if Troy Johnson is ABM myself. Think about it. ABM says he's married with two daughtes. Huhm. ABM is blinded by the woman's verbosity (her "charming" verbosity--Kola fans) and he defended her non stop, then old "Johnson" just about rammed that book of hers down our throats for the entire year of 2002. I never saw a book posted on the front page that long, the review never went away and ol Koloo ended up #1 bestseller for this web site's annual list. Huhm. Not to mention this isn't the first time I've noticed her get her way around here.

Then we have Another Mystery. This one around old "SISTA GAL" herself.

Daniecia goes to law school in Wash. D.C. and Kola was raised there. People from D.C. always come here and defend their homegirl Kola, I noticed about four different times over the last two years. SISTAGAL also lives in D.C.

Huhm. Scatching chin. Could "SistaGal" be Daniecia ("eyes wide open!") or one of her classmates? Or even maybe Sistagal is a childhood friend of the Snake Diva?

Just observations, kids, just observations.

This post, it would seem, is the product of our failure to solve some of the issues in the deleted thread, and now, this thread illustrates the fact that we are all haters at one point or another(thanks btw, you anonymity and contribution affirms this contention), and that we need to respect eachother, this site and talk about books as Thumper sagely suggested in his most recent thread.

Wow, this thread is deep (and wide), it has gone from 'x' to 'y' to 'z' then to 'a', 'b' and 'c', then somehow to '1', '2', '3', I don't know how seriously you guys (genderless) are taking what is being said but for us outsiders this is classic made-for-TV comedy, Thumpers Corner, the situation comedy.

Yukio: I didn't address the relevancy of this thread. Only that it'll never end because there are a few who always have a comeback and just got to have the last word, and of course, there are always the instigators who drop by the board to add fuel to the fire. Hence these issues, whatever you deem them to be, won't ever be solved.

Why end it prematurely, let it run it's course, as indicated above when readers finally decide the conversation is over that is when it will end.

Too bad I never got to read the dreaded 'KB thread'.

Yall toooo proud to admit that yall love one another. As I was reading the above I just saw so much family love up in here that it brought a tear to my eye (it didn't fall though) [keeping macho composure, (hahahaah)].

Wow, if Yukio and Cynique ever got into it, that would be something, the two of them have fantastic skills, skills that 'D' young lady from Howard Law should note.

[Ooops, an instigation faux pas, and I ain't even family, delete this, hahahahahahahahahahaaha]

Troy, I've been on a mini-vacation, so please forgive the delay. To answer your intial question, I think "something" needs to be done to limit the number of the "not so literary" threads and what seems to be constant negative back & forth between some posters.

I would like to second Thumper's request to at least show the IP addresses. That should be an easy fix and limit some of what's been going on. The delete button isn't available, so we don't have that option, so for me ignoring certain threads (or names) is what's working, plus I don't frequent the boards but maybe once a week now; it's just different now and not in a good way (to me).

I gave my version of several exchanges and stated the results, which was that folk have been disrespectful to one another. You are right, however. I have judged, but not by myself. We have judged eachother...so indeed, this couldn't be a court room with so many judges. We are all guilty, is all of us, which is what my post was about. ANd since we are all guilty, we should be able to working a little harder at understanding eachother.

Your insight about where we are, doesn't disqualify the validity and the value of my point, which is what should be discussed. Not whether this is a court room or Thumper's Corner.

Anonymous,

I don't disagree, but i hope that folk would try to communicated better.

Thumper, I'm sure they will (get back to normal). This page is still my home page, so I know I'll be around as I can't open IE without it popping up. :-) And I saw your previous message, but before I could reply the post was gone and a new one in its place, so I'll just say. "I understand completely and meant no offense" and leave it at that.

AALBC continues to be one of my favorite literary resources and while I may not visit the boards as often, I refer everyone to aalbc.com and www.book-remarks.com :-) My other favorite site...
