Hello All,

I've been reading like a house-a-fire! Last week, I completed Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston. It was good! Actually, it was better than I could have hoped for. Zora was more interesting and complex than I imagined. There were things that I had a hard time believing. I found myself tackling that big book, Zora Neale Hurston: A Life in Letters for confirmation, and I got it. Although there were some spotty years, and a couple of issues that really wasn't resolved to my satisfaction, I would recommend Wrapped In Rainbows.

Thumper, is that the book that shows a photograph of Sister Hurston with a gun in a holster draped across her dress and strapped to her hip?

Hello Sis E.

Wasn't you suppose to be dropping a book earlier this year? Did that come out? How about the hookup with the doll series, is that still going on. I may be a little confussed, fill us in.

Sisgal, what's up with your book too, have you been getting any good responses?

Carey

I've seen that photgraph, Sis E, in some other books--she also had on a cowboy hat, and I think it was taken while she was touring the South, talking with rough tough bootleggers and gangsters.

Query: Did the book shed any light on why she forsook the writing life and became a virtual recluse in Florida? Did it talk about that scandal with the l4 year old boy? Most of the stuff I have read has hemmed and hawwed aroung it so much I wonder if it really happened (some say it didnt)

Hello Chris,

The picture of Zora Neale Hurston on the cover of Wrapped in Rainbows is a a picture of the author in a yellow dress with a black hat, wearing black gloves. It's actually a nice cover. I wish I had a poster of it.

Hey y'all,
Chris, we must be thinking of another photo of Sis. Hurston with those six-shooters on her hip. I briefly saw the photo in a book while I was in the Atlanta area.
Carey, my book The Minstrel's Melody, in the American Girl History Mysteries series, is doing quite well. We don't get the honor of having dolls and trunks, etc. with this series, unless you create them yourself, and I don't sew. :-)
My newest book -- well, I'm co-author with Jim Haskins (general editor), Clinton Cox and Brenda Wilkerson of _Black Stars in the Harlem Renaissance_ (Wiley), and I've got a new young adult book coming out this summer called _Abram's Way._
Carey, do you attend the "I'll Make Me a Way" extravaganza at the Iowa Historical Building in Des Moines each February? I'm told it's quite an impressive day.

Hi Thumper and Cary and Chris and all,
Well, I was so curious about the photo of Sis. Hurston and the holster strapped to her hip that I went to the bookstore. yes, that photo is in Valerie Boyd's book but not on the cover. It's in the photo section (which follows the text starting at p. 319 I believe) on the left hand side. There, that scratches that itch. :-)

Hello Sis E.

. The Minstrel's Melody...yeah, you sent us that wonderful book last year, thank you again. I'm glad it's doing well, I knew it would. Good luck on your present endeavors

I've never heard of the "I'll Make Me A Way" extravaganza in Des Moines but I'll tell you what, I'm on it *smile*. As you well know there's not an over abundance of things to do in this state so thank you for bring it to our attention.

Carey,
The "I'll Make Me a World" festivities is on the weekend of Janury 24-25 in Des Moines. You *should* be able to access it by going to Google and tracking down the web site, or even checking the Iowa Historical Society (or Building) web site. Or just type in African Americans in Iowa or something like that.

I've started on this book. It seems to be clearing up a few mysteries, and isn't a hagiography by any means.

Psst Chris...LOL...I've never heard of a hagiography...thought you were teasing until I looked it up. I have this book of Zora Neale Thurston as well as the other recent one edited by Carla Kaplan, but ummmm...LOL. I don't "do" BABs (Tee acronym) when I'm behind. So, please keep us posted.
