I highly recommend this book. I can’t say I “enjoyed” it because the story line is so tragic and sad – it had me in tears - that word just won’t fit. I guess it would be classified as crime drama/street life fiction because it’s a mystery set in the projects of North Philadelphia dealing with drugs, rape, murder and just plain ole misery and hopelessness. It’s fast paced with some interesting and believable characters, although I wished he had developed a couple of them a little more.

I haven’t read Jones’s first book Pipe Dream but I might have to check it out. It seems to be set in the same place and dealing with the same subject matter so it’ll be interesting to see how he branches out in the future.

Oops. I forgot to mention the one big flaw at the end of the book. The blurb at amazon.com calls it a deus ex machina and I had to look that up but it fits perfectly. It didn't really detract from the book because it comes at the very end.

I also have to confess I did something I thought I had gotten over - early on in the reading I went to the end and read whodunit. There was a long period where I refused to read mysteries. I just couldn't take not knowing and I would almost always go to the end and see what happened. Most of the time I would go back and finish the book. But it got to the point where I figuered - why bother even reading it. I thought I had gotten over that a few years ago and I've enjoyed mysteries since then without doing that but this time - I just HAD to know. It took the pressure off and I was able to go back and get into the book without worrying who did what. Strange huh?

Crystal -

Thanks for reading The Bridge, and for taking the time to put a post about it on AALBC. I truly appreciate your support. Though Publisher's Weekly gave The Bridge a good review (as did Kirkus, Library Journal, and Booklist), they also said that I grew up in the projects, which I didn't. I take it as a compliment, though. If they believe I grew up in the place I'm writing about, I must be doing a pretty good job of bringing that place to life. I guess I'm trying to tell you to take that duex ex machina thing with a grain of salt. You can't believe everything you read, because reviewers make mistakes, too. Thank God there are readers like you to set the record straight and let people know it's a really good book. But I digress.

I hope you will take a moment to pick up my first book, Pipe Dream, which isn't really about the same subject matter as The Bridge. Though it's set in North Philly, it's about four drug addicts running from the cops for a murder they did not commit. I think you'll enjoy it.

Now. Get out there and make everybody buy my book! And don't let nobody hold yours. You know black folks don't like to give books back!

No, seriously, thanks for the love. I appreciate it.

Take care and God bless,
Solomon Jones

Hey Solomon,

I loved Pipe Dream! So real, and dark and the characters were dynamite. It's one of my favorites of all time, keep up the good work and I will be sure to pick up your new book, "The Bridge" very soon.

ROFL, y'all are funny, but I wanna know too. Who?

Solomon, I think you recall me saying I enjoyed Pipe Dream? A few of my book buddies read it as well and I only remember one person who didn't like it as much as us, but you know how that is.

You said: "If they believe I grew up in the place I'm writing about, I must be doing a pretty good job of bringing that place to life."

I think that's a very valid statement. I like reading books that TAKE ME THERE! And I know with Pipe Dream, I felt like I was right there on the run... Again, kudos.

-Tee
